Help with HPX301, Please:-)

Hello my friends

I have struggled for some time to get some beautiful picture out of my HPX301, especially outdoors but even indoors it seems to me that it’s more of pure luck if the pictures will be good?:(

The strange thing is that in the LCD display and view finder the image is crisp and sharp with beautiful colors.
But when I record and then play back the recorded file, the images is changed to something ugly and super UN sharp with noise, distorted picture and blurry (low resolution with a great loss of quality of the recorded video file after recorded in to camera)?
I’ve looked at the recorded files from the camera in my laptop and it look like crap (sorry but this is the case)?

I’ve recorded it in 0 db gain both indoors and outdoors with a perfect white and black balanced camera in both AVC-Intra 100, AVC-Intra 50, DVCPRO and SD in both PAL and NTSE (both 60/50p, 30pn/25pn and so on). I have tried all scene files and different shutter speed and with no shutter speed on.
I’ve played some HPX171 clip in the camera and those looks so good so it has something to do with the capturing the recording image?

I really need your help on this

Do you have some scene and shooter speed tips for me to start with in sun/Cloudy daylight?

Is it possible for anyone to be able to guide me in a few simple steps?

I have CineForm Prospect HD as my master codec (not for AVC-Intra yet) together with 2 x 24” Dell Pro LCD and one Pro JVC monitor.

I love what I see in the view finder and LCD and this is how it should look like after recorded on those P2 cards.

To me it looks like you are not always focussing accurately. For instance the child picture looks sharp to me but the flowers not.

Thanks Cees Mutsaers.

But if you read my post you will find out why, It's super sharp in the LCD display and view finder, but look like crap after I watch it from the P2 card????

Can someone help me please, I'm lost here and need one good scene file to start with for outdoor conditions, I am desperate now:-(

When you view the contents of the card, what are you using for a monitor? What you view on the LCD and VF should look just as great being viewed from the card playback. Does the image look worse when you connect the camera directly to your ProJVC monitor?

Also, a scene file won't help it look better on your P2 card. I don't think you're being exactly clear about what you're viewing and what codec it's been converted to.

Can you embed the images here - cant see them due to security settings.

How do they compare with shots some of us have posted up here?

You are 100% on your backfocus yes?

Guess Nacka's sorted it mate as he hasn't responded here.

Mucking up on macro is very useful for that Letus look :) . Its the ring behind it you need to worry about...!

Hope you are enjoying the camera (and the jetski you bought with the change ;) )

Thanks guys for all help, I bought the Marshall "V-LCD70P-3GSDI" and now I finally can see what's going on and it makes my work sooooo much easier.

The LCD and view finder is good but not big enough to make proper focus in my opinion.

Good for you... Glad to hear that!

I have the same problem!

I have the same problem!

I have the HPX302EN camera, and have this same problem where the footage comes into Final Cut Pro looking like arse. Grainy and a weird sharpening process going on. FCP converts the footage into the 422 Pro-res HQ codec. Is this the result of FCP importing proxy files instead of the proper source files?

Also, I am a first time user of this camera, and left the camera at it's default settings out of the box, but changed the gain to -3db.

Do you have the proxy card option (that fits in a P2 card slot)?

What scene file setting are you using etc Spill more beans!

BD

I am using 2x Eseries 32GB P2 cards (AJ-P2E032XG). I am not sure whether they support the proxy features or not.

Also, I am using the default F1 scene file on the camera. Gain is set to -3db. Auto knee was accidentally on in some shots and off in others.

Ok so you are NOT importing proxy as you do not have the proxy card option.

Upgrade to latest firmware and try the revised F3 SPARK scene file. - forget dull F1 unless you have Baselight kit and are a sh hot grader! Also download the latest scene files available separately from Panasonic and done by a reputable DOP - search here for link.

Hello everybody, this is my first entry here. I've just changed after 10 years of using Sony to Panasonic. I decided the HPX301 as my choice and I just felt into Problems.

I,ve done some shooting yesterday afternoon and as I was checking the files in final cut a couple of minutes ago. Most of the shots are fine but...
Please have a look on the picture in the following link. Zoom is 00 and focus is set to endless. Since I received it every shot with 'this setting' is looking like this!?
Made in AVCINTRA 100 with 1080/25p - used FCP native, export in tga. Scene File is always F3 SPARK.

By the way, I just received some feedback of the files I shot in Nice. The newest firmware is on the camera but the rolling shutter problem is NOT solved!
Have a look on this short clip too, I really thought the RS-Problem was solved!? It’s exported in a standard YouTube HD File (.mov), made with the AVC INTRA 100 Codec.

Hi maxemanuel, here some ideas.

First to the RS-Problem: RS is NOT removed with the new firmware, thats not possible, its still a CMOS-Cam. BUT the Problem with Flashlights is almost solved by the Update. You have to put the new FBC-Function on a Userbutton and activate it.
Im not sure, but if there are MANY Flashlights, it could be too much for the FBC-Function. I didnt tested it.

To the Stills: Thats difficult to judge, there are so many factors in importing/exporting settings etc.... But maybe just the Backfocus is not correct a very little bit... Or its something wrong in the Scene-File Setting. For example, the V Detail Freq is set to THICK?
By the way, ive made the experience with other professionel Cams and Lenses, that sometimes its necessary to set the Focus to endless and than to turn the focusring back a little bit to get in focus....

The HPX 301 is a great Cam, but in my opinion its necessary to play and experiment around with it to "tune" the Cam till you get results which match with your flavour...

Hi Emmet,

thank you very much for your answers! In fact i already thought about that the Objective is not set perfectly. So now I'm trying first calibrating the Objective with an Siemensstern and hopefully it will be solved than. Even with the Scene File Setting I have first get better known too, right Emmet. Is there some SF Setting you would suggest me to use for my camera or probably just to test with? Using the EX-Series from Sony it was a 'must' to shoot with -3db set. Is it the same way with the HPX300/301?

Tanks, Max

Thanks for the Tanks, sometimes i wish id had one for rushhour... :-)

Yes, -3db is a good idea. Since the Firmware-Update there are less problems with noise, but why not if you have enough light.

I prefer the Black Stretch Scene File (Nr. 4), with little tweaks. Dont know exactly what tweaks ive done and cant check it at the moment. But almost every menu-point is something around 0, i remember. V Detail Frequ: THIN, Skin Tone Detail: OFF. If a item is set to -1 or +1 should make no big difference.
I like the File, because it has good dynamic range and neutral colours, not too warm like the Cinema-files sometimes.
And check if DRS is off, it could cause noise in dark areas if its on... Just use it if you definetly need it. And setting DRS to 2 or 1 in the Scene file menu is maybe better than 3.

So on, greetings!
