Help name our Search Engine

Kirk Gillock

Rebel with a cause
For the past two years we've been slowly building a non-profit search engine which will eventually replace the Google search we're using on our site right now. It's a way for us to become independent and provide the public with a non-profit alternative to sites like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Please help us come up with a name for our Little Search Engine That Could.

The name doesn't necessarily need to mean anything or explain what the site does. It can be a word you invented or it means something in another language. All we ask is that it's short (1-2 syllables) and available.

Here are some keywords to help with brainstorming:
altruistic, freedom, charity, united, giving, alternative, considerate, search

Here's a Whois site for checking availability:

Any one want to get the ball rolling? :)

aesthete \ES-theet\, noun:
One having or affecting great sensitivity to beauty, as in art or nature.

Aesthete.com :)

victus.org appears to be available. Latin for nourishment or sustenance.

Or datum.org. Latin for "donate."

Titles can make or break you sometimes, especially if you're trying to offer an alternative to google. I mean Bing is having enough trouble, and it's got loads of advertising and money behind it. We discussed Bing for a while in our advertising class (or was it prod admin class, forgot), but we realized the difficulty they would have to get their name out there, even though they're Microsoft. This brought up one or two search engines that were great and did what bing does, but fell apart due to their names and lack of 'word of mouth'/'advertising'.

But needless to say, you need a catchy title that people will like. Plus it should be easy to remember and to type in.

Though Aesthete is nice, I had to double check the post just to remember how to spell it. So it's prob not the best choice.

So perhaps something even easier. Off the top of my head:

- thatcould.com
(you called it the search enging that could, and thought it was clever, could even be a theme)

- Torus.com
(means a few things)

- optop.com

aaand can't think of much else right now...

greeches - It's really hard finding words/names that are not taken. Thanks for trying.

C2V - Some good suggestions. Thanks! I've put them on the list.

Jon - Thanks for the input. It's definitely a huge mountain to climb and we know there is absolutely NO WAY we can beat/compete with the 500lb gorilla(s). But we feel that, in a few years, a small percentage of the population will want something new and want an alternative to Google. Especially as they saturate more and more of the Internet with their brand, ads, and cookies. So we think we've got the "hook" some people will like (i.e. a search engine with less results but more heart - lol). Now all we need is a great name that reflects our mission of world domination..... I mean, good will towards all people.

What do y'all (my Texas roots are showing) think of these two?

JingJai.org - means "sincere" in Thai.

WaiJai.org - means "trust" in Thai.

Our charity is named after a Thai word meaning "freedom" so maybe we should continue with that theme. Pad-thai.org is probably taken, right?

:)

PK, I know you are non-profit, but I really think you need a .com (as opposed to .org) for people to remember it. Lame I know, but that's what people automatically assume.

(Or course get the .org too, but the .com is what will count)

- Mikko

We'll definitely get the .com too (might have to buy it in some cases), but I think people are more open to .orgs with the success of Wikipedia.org .

Almost forgot..... HI MIKKO!!!

Wait a minute! Mikko is a great name! And it looks like both the .com and .org are not really being used for anything in particular. Maybe we can get them cheap. lol

Just Mikko it!! :)

Honestly... I wonder how many people see this thread? If somebody comes up with something great I hope it doesn't get registered out from under you.

I like fazoor... although it is similar to pasta fazoo. Batutta... I'm going to start using that word and make up multiple definitions for it. Right now it means romantically illusive... "her love was fazoor."... but I'm thinking it could also mean any tool made of wood, that would not normally be made of wood... like if you want to bang something apart and you don't have a sledgehammer, but you do have a 4' long 4x4... you could say "hand me that fazoor."

PK... for a memorable and commercially viable search engine... I'd look to things or people that search... mental words... thinking words... considerations... animals and insects... puns and/or double meanings of words.

My mind goes to soul-searching... Sherlock Holmes... detectives... derivitives of famous detective names with a PK, Isara, or Thai twist... PKholmes... currysearch... curryup... searchorama... fazoogle? Okay... I'll think about it today and see if I can come up with something good... the gears are turning.

Thanks, Matt. :)

Batutta - I like fazoor too. It's a fun word. "Put your fazoor on stun." Just not sure if people would know how to spell it if they heard it.

:(

Here's a few Thai words that have some good meanings.

fondee
jurmai
jaisoo
jeejai
ginjai
lenook
jurlao

and some random ones (not Thai):

gleeming
altsea

and the one our students and volunteers like:

Gizmick

Do any of those jump out at you?
