the lovely, talented Marion Kerr has two monologue rants on youtube that I'm posting below. I didn't write or direct these. they were born from the imagination of a filmmaker named Brian James Crewe.

Marion's wardrobe and makeup here is very much in line with Amber's look.

i've rarely come across an actor so natural, so soulful, so REAL; and I simply cannot believe she hasn't been "discovered" by the Hollywood machine yet. you can read the original script here to see how (seemingly) effortlessly she internalizes the dialogue and let's it flow naturally.

DAMN!! ZAK!! Just watched Chocolate. Marion was great in that. You're drawing me in kicking and screaming...and I know this isn't what I'd normally watch...
 
just discovered an artist named Airom Bleicher. his musical compositions are fascinating as it concerns remixes and improvisations of layered "progressive electronic music, lush female vocals, and swirling cello". i'm attempting to contact him about composing music for the film. at the very least i could obtain sync rights, etc to existing tracks.

Zak, knowing your love for experimentation, how much is the dialogue going to be scripted. Is this going to run with a tight script or are you planning on putting your characters (actors) in a situation and having them improvise along some general guidelines?
 
i won't be scripting dialogue. not at this stage, prior to rehearsals. frankly, i can't be trusted to give a voice to these characters. because left to my own devices, i'll be way too clever, trying to infuse "meaning" into the words. it won't be real. i prefer to develop the characters, chart the course of their story, then hand everything over to the actor where we continue to develop figure out the character during improvised rehearsals. what is learned there will be used to revise the story. and then we'll shoot it.

i've worked this way on two features and have some new concepts i want to try to improve the process. one thing that might change (and i really have to think about this) is whether i will take the dialogue from the improvised rehearsals and shape that into a more conventional screenplay, or whether i will stick with the usual method of writing clear intentions and character objectives for each scene. i know it's unusual but the idea of writing the dialogue down and saying "this is definitely what the scene is going to be", scares me. i worry i could be missing out on the discovery of something we hadn't realized was there before. if there's a deeper truth, i don't want to miss it.
 
made contact with Airom Bleicher and had preliminary conversations about an approach. he has fascinating, intellectual ideas about music and I look forward to working with him when the time comes. still on the hunt for other musicians/djs/etc to fill out the soundtrack. i'm now attempting to get ahold of a guy who goes under the handle of Deklun.

Re: your approach with improvisation and dialogue...

Interesting approach for film - exciting if you have actors comfortable (but not *too* comfortable) with that approach. Are you doing your own version of the whole "Atlantic Theatre Company" approach?

In an earlier post, I presented some links to a pair of YouTube clips from The Rant N Rave Project that Marion Kerr had performed in. Today I learned from Marion that the actor who appears in the latest in the series, Chase Korte, died in a traffic accident on Saturday.

Now, I didn't know him and I don't pretend to be greatly affected by his passing, but I also have great sympathy for what his friends and family must be feeling, and I'm making this post simply to honor his talent.
 
quickly want to announce that Zach Seivers will be joining the production as Sound Designer. Zach will have his ears trained on all aspects of the sound from acquisition to the final 5.1 mix. Zach points to the sound design work of David Lynch as his primary influence and inspiration. Zach's enthusiasm for the creative possibilities for filmmaking and sound design are encouraging... and I also like his name.

Received a phone call from Deklun tonight. I told him a little about the film. He said that lately his compositions have grown more melancholy in nature. I told him that a certain melancholy, or thoughtful sadness, is the precise atmosphere this story is suspended in.

I've nearly finished the very detailed outline of Heart of Now. The structure is there. My intentions for each scene are nearly there. Before I began writing the screenplay, I wanted to meet with Marion Kerr who will be playing "Amber". We met yesterday for lunch and had what i consider to be an important discussion about how she approaches a screenplay as an actor and what she finds useful for finding her way to her character. This is the first time I've written a script where i know who will be playing the character at the center of the story. The process of handing the characters over to the actors is beginning a little sooner than i thought, in a small way. It's interesting. And exciting.

Also, Sabi Pictures, as of ten minutes ago, placed an order for Dennis Wood's Brevis35 imaging adapter with the CineFuse 1 and CineFuse 3 ground glass elements. i'm expecting it to ship a month from now giving me plenty of time before October (official start of production) to shoot some pre-emptive pick-ups with Marion around Los Angeles. Also picked up a 50mm f/1.2 nikon lens. plan to buy more closer to production.

Just made a deal with an online retailer to donate 5 t-shirts in exchange for end screen credit. I will publish the retailer's name after the deal is official (in writing). these are the shirts being donated to Amber's wardrobe...
