FEATURE: "HEART OF NOW" – a film by SABI

Those are some nice shots, Zak. I'm following your project with interest...even thought it runs counter to my ideas of making a movie I'm sure you know what you want and will get it. Good luck!

...but it's true what Ron said last night: that not until you've made the film, are you actually ready to make the film.

Brutal and true. Just maddening. I almost wish I could shoot an entire film twice. With 15 days in between to go over every scrap with the editor. Then shoot the entire film again from head to toe.

And I wouldn't even tell the actors. I'd schedule the second shoot for "cutaways" and "experimental stuff". Then watch their faces as I tell them that we're shooting the whole damn thing again!

sounds like everything is coming together nicely... test footage looks great. can't wait to start scoring.

hi airom, welcome to the dvxuser boards! everyone, please be sure to check out airom's web site.

UPDATES
Kevin and myself worked out a tentative schedule for a 23 day shoot for the month of October. Yes, we are moving production back one month. The screenplay is mere weeks from completion, and Sabi Pictures has officially opened its doors at the new location at LA Center Studios.

CHARACTER BIOS...

AMBER & GABE (played by Marion Kerr & Kelly McCracken)
(male and female, ages 27 and 42 respectively)
These two lead roles have already been cast.

TOBEY (male, age 30-33)
an unmotivated, untalented, hipster who lacks focus. popular amongst his friends. a procrastinator who just now, in his early thirties, is beginning to question what he’s going to do with his life. ready to trade in his von dutch t-shirt and white-rimmed sunglasses for something more. lately, he has grown indifferent toward his girlfriend, Amber.

EDWIN (male, age 24-27)
reserved, shy. more comfortable in friendships with women than men. his closest friend is Monica who treats him like a younger brother. Edwin has privately developed a crush on Amber.

MONICA (female, age 27)
a young woman in a stale, unhappy relationship who pushes the boundaries of her commitment to her boyfriend by engaging her closest girlfriends in overly-flirtatious, some might say, homosexual behavior.

PHIL (female, age 27)
Phil is short for Philomena. after years of having to explain it, she learned the greek origin of her name meant “friend of strength”. she is very protective of her friends and a genuinely compassionate soul. currently single and spending alot of time partying with Monica.

JAMIE (female, age 24)
a few weeks ago, after a long night of drinking and dancing, Jamie and Monica made out on the dance floor of a night club. Jamie claims no memory of the night, but that’s a lie. And she’s only spoken about it with her two-timing boyfriend who encouraged the idea of a potential threesome.

ANDREW (male, age 45)
a physically fit, accomplished location scout, making the transition from b-movies to major studio pictures. secretly he runs a porn site featuring nude pictures of his young filipina girlfriend, Ava, who he met at the gym.

MAGGIE (female, age 39)
a scared, lonely, overwelmed single-mother to an unexpected three year old. dated Gabe for a solid year before he broke up with her. saw the warning signs, tried to affect change which only brought about the end sooner. he asked her to wait until he was ready for the commitment, and while "in waiting", discovered she had moved on emotionally.

ELOISE (female, age 50)
Tobey’s mother. loves her son. sends him money every month. desperately wants to help him clean up his act.

ADAM (male, age 42)
friend of Gabe and Andrew. they have a weekly poker game every thursday. works professionally as an assistant director. met Andrew three years ago on “MEGA-GATOR!”

DAVID (male, age 39)
a lead actor of a number of b-movies. met Andrew and Adam on “MEGA-GATOR!”. the only film his character died in. he had his head bitten off by the title creature.

DANIEL (male, age 30)
Tobey’s best friend. single, aggressive toward women. he and Tobey quit their cocaine habit together. advises Tobey to dump Amber at every opportunity.

PRODUCER (male, age 33)
ambitious producer of straight to video action flicks. a low level Jerry Bruckheimer looking for his Michael Bay.

DIRECTOR (male, age 36)
a director of commercials and music videos. making his directorial debut on a conventional sci-fi actioner that Van Damme recently turned down.

I’m sitting here next to 37 headshots and 3.5 hours of video from friday’s auditions. I want to thank everyone who made the journey downtown, in particular, Kimberly who spent nearly an hour driving around on the other side of the 110. It was a pleasure meeting each of you and I hope everyone left feeling good about their audition. You really should. I wish we had more than 12 roles to fill.

this morning I scouted a location near griffith park — a pedestrian bridge that crosses the 5 freeway. Amber, Tobey and Edwin cross this bridge early in the picture. stills were taken at 10:30am.

some. will be scheduling more for this weekend and more after that. you should send me your headshot/resume so i can get you in the mix... if you want. you'd probably be best suited for "TOBEY".

I'll send it to you as soon as I get a chance. And Tobey is that part that interests me. He sounds like a very rich character. Thanks Zak.

kevin and i scouted the butterfly pavilion (which I just learned to spell correctly today (I had been writing 'pavillion'). these pics were taken this afternoon around 2pm just outside the natural history museum.

today my number one rule of indie filmmaking is: "the project will seemingly fall apart many times. and every time, you will have to put it back together."

yes... it was one of those days. onward and upward!!!

hey, what the hell!!! here's a muthafuckin' TEASER!!! [click to view]
a little preview (culled from camera test footage) of what's to come.

hey guys -

wanted to officially announce the cinematographer on Heart of Now. her name is Justina Mintz (aka Cinemintz). that's her in the middle during a camera test. This is where is was cemented for me that Justina has an amazing eye for composition and nuance. During the test she pulled off the floating, searching quality I was looking for. Her frame would eventually settle, or lock into, a composition balanced between Marion and the elements of her environment in a very raw, verite manner. And she was doing it on the fly, which is crucial considering the nature of our productions.

I contacted Justina through MySpace where I was able to search for local DPs. She initially stood out based on her list of favorite films — Morvern Callar, Ratcatcher, Stalker and others. I was sure anyone who admired Lynne Ramsey was going to be someone I’d be interested in collaborating with. From her I got a real sense of someone who is a filmmaker for the same reasons I am. A few, not all, of the other DPs I considered for this project seemed less enthusiastic about my somewhat unconventional strategies for how and why this will will look the way it will. Justina, on the otherhand, embraced it and will take it further, adding layers and going places only she can go. So i look forward to that -- to making a film I could not make on my own. And also to the mystery of what form Heart of Now will ultimately take. I have my own vision of course. But i'm only one of roughly a dozen artists working on this picture. And if I do say so myself, Justina was a great find and we welcome her to the Sabi "family".
