FEATURE: "HEART OF NOW" – a film by SABI

Zak... I really love that tag, very good... makes me want to see the film even more.. now I have to find some time to watch these podcasts.

finding an appropriate tagline has been a challenge. i cringe on sounding to commercial but I understand the benefit of narrowing things down to a simple, concise statement with universal appeal. considering adding a "to..." so it reads:

"to find your way, follow your heart"

but I keep going back and forth on it. my editor didn't like it. she thought it was "too cute" for this movie. but after talking we thought the trailer, poster and overall vibe of the film would dress the words in the appropriate context and avoid an overly sentimental reading like you get just writing those words in a Word document. which is how I showed her this tagline and some other alternatives.

Clocking in at 2 hours and 12 minutes I proudly present to you all V1!

Wow. Congrats! How much longer do you guys think you'll be in post? Including fine cuts, focus grouping, coloring, mixing, etc?

Cant wait to see this.

THOUGHTS ON THE 2 HOUR+ CUT
Last night we threw the film up on my HD projector and watched it on the 9ft screen in my living room. I was a little terrified because I hadn't actually seen everything play out beginning to end yet. But I was amazed (and relieved) that Jamie had shaped all the raw material I gave her into a compelling little movie. Not much work is left to reach picture lock at this point. We may be going into the New Year ready to begin sound design. One scene in particular just isn't working and we need to figure it out. The performances rock, but it's not landing in the right place and the blocking is suspect. It just feels like a scene, where the rest of the film feels like we are eavesdropping on someone's private life. The performances and staging and the drama in the rest of the film all feel very organic. Maybe this is just an illustration of how hard I am on myself as I tend to be unsatisfied with everything I do, but last night I saw a good film. If I hadn't made it myself, I would have certainly wished I had.

nice timeline!

how are you foreseeing your sound design going? I'm very interested in what you have planned for that. I've been getting more and more into sound design these past few years, approaching from a very visual background... I used to know jack squat about audio production. But DAMN... I've realized over the last few years just how critical an amazing sound design is.. and does for the overall film. I tend to lean towards a sparse, experimental vibe... I watched Ballast recently and the SD in that was amazing, mainly due to the sparseness. But on the flip side, I just watched Bodysong and it had a very busy, rich textured SD... both films were amazing and both were on opposite ends of the spectrum....

so just curious as to what you had in mind.... good work dude!

Hey Zak

Do you plan to stay in this genre? All this talk here about action being the most viable commercially. Just wonderin'.

yeah, whatever you would describe this genre as, it's where i'm happiest. i don't know that I could make an action picture and not want to punch myself in the face every day. it would certainly be the most actionless action film you're likely to see. HEART OF NOW, ELOQUENT GRAFFITI, WANDERLUST are films that I would hope could sit alongside Breaking the Waves, Half Nelson, The Wrestler and other works of that kind.
