Headphone recommendation please

Is there an inexpensive, lightweight headphone out there that anyone would recommend for monitoring sound recording. I'm using it on prosumer gear rather than pro gear, so I'm not into the esoteric. In the UK you cannot try on headphones in a shop because of EU law; something about hygiene probably.

I bought Sennheiser eH150's on spec. They surround the ear and block out a reasonable amount of ambient sound. Unfortunately they must be designed for iPods and emphasize bass notes considerably. There were about £25 ($40).

Any more neutral alternatives?

thanks

Sony MDR-V6 have been around for ages. Or the MDR7506. V6 says "for digital" on the earpiece, the 7506 says "professional". 75-85 USD respectively on average. nice, comfortable, and very balanced sound. not sure what the real difference is between the two though, except for the "for digital" or "Professional" sticker. ive had the V6 for 8 years now and they still sound great and hold up well, physically. I hope that helps.

The MDR-7506's are built more solidly than the V6's. Flat and precise, they're the industry standard and will take more abuse than pretty much anything out there.

I have several MDR-7506 headphones, and also several V6 headphones. There is no visible, mechanical or audible difference except the sticker and the gold plating on the 7506 connector. The most significant reported difference is the warranty. This is a very frequently-asked question and the answer continues to be the same (at least in the Western hemisphere.) A Sennheiser model (280?) appears to hold a similar "favorite" status in Europe, etc.

Chris,

What's your budget?

I love my Sennheiser HD 25-1 II, but they cost about 130 quid! They are very lightweight and great for monitoring audio.

I'm not a pro either, I just received an Amazon voucher at the right moment. :)

My Sony V6s were in sad shape, so I purchased the Senn MD-280 and really like them. Not so much that the sound is superior, but they have better ergonomics and attenuation IMHO. And, similar pricing.

I bought two new pair of 7506 from a Hong Kong eBay and they seemed genuine to me. Even with shipping, they were less expensive than anywhere I knew of in North America.

This is not true, there is no Euro law about not trying on headphones (in-ear ones, maybe, but not normal headphones) - it's just the shops excuse for laziness.

The industry standard in the UK and Europe is the HD 25-1 (now HD 25-1 II) which I have had myself for 20 years.

At a lower cost there is the HD 380 Pro, HD 280 Pro and HD 25-SP II

The cheapest I would look at are the HD 215.

I would not use other Sennehsier closed headphones for monitoring.

Hi, thanks for the recommendation. The MDR-7506's arrived in less than a week, cost just $48 with free P&P and are just superb for the task. Many thanks folks. The ebay seller was worldbiz_cn and he has more in stock if anyone is interested.

.

Interesting - that came from a respected UK hifi dealer with whom I have been doing business with for years. They used to have headphones on display, which is why I went to them in the first place. Hmmm

I went for the Sony in the end, since they have higher sensitivity, which helps with the paltry output from my Panasonic AVCCAM and they fold away neatly.

cheers
Chris
