HDR in REDCODE RAW

A direct image sensor would be good, the the Foveon isn't one. It has three layers, and the light has to go through the above layers to hit the lower ones, making the lower layers noisier and less specific in terms of their colour. Hopefully they'll get this better though as they advance their technology.

Is that just Foveon's trademark name of the sensor or something?

I guess the closest thing would be a linear tri color scanning sensor, but I don't think that is practical for motion pictures.

Well, what you ideally want is - lots of resolution, and that each pixel records a high dynamic range, and the complete colour spectrum at each sample position. Bayer CFA spreads the colour over a few spatially represented pixels, whereas Foveon does it depth. Perhaps a hybrid space / depth method might be the best compromise in the future, but who knows?

Nope, I'd have each layer offset from the layer above, like a pixel-shift in 3 CCD terms, to try and help interpolated a higher resolution from it.
