HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

Colin,

We've decided to consolidate all the features and fixes we were working on into a single, big firmware update which we'll be releasing soon. I've tested the Beta version and it's a big advance. It obviously includes playback, which itself has some great features. All of this has delayed the release but you'll find it's well worth it.

How soon is soon? I have a shoot going on next week, and would love to have this new firmware...less explaining to the client why the picture looks so bad on playback. Advertising agencies do not understand the idea of firmware updates...

I suggest you record internally on your camera too for playback to the client.

I'd 2nd that - Atomos has been promising the Hardware based playback way back in April (at NAB). As a Black Belt Certified re-seller of Atomos product I'm kind of let down, but know that they will fix it as soon as they can.
Until then, we have to use work around methods.

Completely understand. It's taken much longer than we expected and we're sorry about that. But it works now. I've seen the Beta. It's a great implementation - I think you'll like the way we've done it. Not just playback, but the Timecode features as well.

We're expecting it in about a week but I'm not going to guarantee anything because the devil is in the detail!

Dave, that's great to hear!!! I have a number of clients who will be very happy once it's released!
Keep up the great work, also was great meeting you a NAB too.

did somebody already found out how 5DmII HDMI-OUT 60i wrapper works for best output? 3:2 pulldown is still the best method for resolution/quality? :-(

The biggest issue with the 5D is that it pollutes the HDMI output with viewfinder objects. You can't get any sort of clean output because of this.

dave, i think we already discussed it somewhere :) not with magic lantern at all which provide clean output and without pushing record it makes 1080/60i... i am just curious how to recolllect the frames to have the best possible 24p or 25p 1080p :-)

If that's the case then - fantastic; but I'd heard that while ML clears the actual viewfinder, it either still leaves the icons in the HDMI image, or blanks the HDMI output altogether. If anyone's actually got a clean output from a 5D using ML - it'd love to know.

There are lots of programs that will strip out the pulldown. There's Compressor, and there's JES Deinterlacer, which is free and seems to work well.

Until then, we have to use work around methods.

To be honest work arounds are getting totally out of hand with these new products. It would be better if tech manufactures would actually finish a product before putting out into the wild. Instead we have to hound and bug the developer to finish what they actually started just to get something that should be there in the first place. For me the work around is to not use the product, and use something else.

Do I feel bad trying to get Atomos to finish their software? Absolutely not, Atomos owes it to me to finish this promptly, as they promptly took my cash for this. As for resellers suggesting I work around the limitations, I hope you lay this all out for new prospective buyers, instead of telling them after the fact.

Anybody want to buy a Ninja recorder? It's barely been used.

To be fair to Atomos, as an external recorder, it delivers proRes quality videos as it was advertised. This niche market only has a few competitors. Especially at this price point, there are no other options. Seriously, other than playback in unit, what else was promised? David Shapton has been pretty open with the development of the Ninja on the forums. I'm sure everyone that has the unit would gladly tolerate blocky playback for a short time in order to get the unit earlier. Just take a look at RED with cameras in the field with half-baked firmwares. BTW, the software will never be finished because it's always in flux.

As this unit currently sits, it lacks basic post production common sense. All clips have the same name, and all clips have the same timecode. These two things on there own are important. Then there is playback. This unit in it's current state is a post production nightmare if you just "drop to the timeline" you need to rename all clips to unique names before you do anything. For those that just use the clip names as-is, let's hope you never have to move the project and relink the clips. This is basic functionality stuff I am talking about. So to say that it is the fastest way to get your footage into your NLE is true, but should be marked with a dozen footnotes explaining the dangers in doing so.

I'm not asking for the world here, just the bare minimum in a reasonable amount of time. Can't believe that everybody else is so complacent with this stuff.

Until the firmware update that promises to fix these issues arrives, here's a solid workaround.

Use adobe bridge to batch rename the files. You can set it up to use the date and time of day in the filename so that you have a unique name for each clip. Then use a little program called "qtchange" to give the clips timecode and reel name. This solves the post nightmare that comes from same name files and no TC. This software is $25 but well worth it.

lol, wow, I did not know this. It's amazing how many simple things come to light once hardware has been out for a few months. These types of things seem pretty basic and quite a nightmare to have to deal with later on. Hopefully these are fixed with the "firmware" update soon.

Hi Dave,
I bought the ATOMOS about a month ago, I am very well, I expect acnhe this update, I wanted to ask you something, if I use an HDMI splitter 1 in -2 out, I can simultaneously send the same signal and a all'atomos monitor for prewiv?
Thank you soon
Rosario

@Rosario

Some splitters work, but not all of them. It is always best to turn the Ninja on first, and then the other device. It is best if you can try one out from a reseller before buying one.
