HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

The first thing we're doing is implementing Time Of Day timecode, and this will be in the same imminent release as the Hardware Playback. It's very close now.

I just wanted to add that our upcoming release will fix the issue with file-naming as well. All clips will have (at the very least) sequential numbering.

how involved is the workflow to remove pulldown at this point? is it a simple batch process through cinema tools or do you have to manually define the cadence for each clip?

In Compressor, once you've set up the batch parameters (ProRes to ProRes, image size, etc) it seems to detect the cadence automatically, so it's pretty much drag-and-drop.

Does compressor recompress it? How long does that take? How about cinema tools? I've used it with stuff I captured direct to the computer and it's quick but I had to define the cadence manually for each clip.

Any reverse-telecine with compressed material is going to require uncompressing and recompressing, which will represent a single generation loss. But with ProRes, this is undetectable, because you're working with a very high quality codec and matching all the parameters perfectly (in terms of pixel alighnment etc). ProRes is good for dozens of generations, so this isn't an issue.

I thought Compressor was pretty quick, but I'm expecting our own Stripper application to be faster - but I haven't tested it yet as it's still being worked on.

I would love to go tapeless (without HDV) with my old camera XH-A1.
In this case the conversion would have to be from Component to HDMI to Ninja

There is a product KanexPro (Component to HDMI Audio/Video Converter)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/770114-REG/KanexPro_RGBRLHD_Component_to_HDMI_Audio_Video.html

Wondering if anyone has any experience with this product.
Also if I add a 5v Battery Pack for the converter + Ninja - could this be a field solution?

Any help inputs greatly appreciated

Jennamanni , I have gone tapeless with Ninja converting my Sony HDR-FX1 + Ninja + Component to HDMi converter. The converter is this one I got from eBay :http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...338951&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2831wt_902

I love it. However for the battery option you might want to get Tekkeon battery with all it's power tips. The reason is because the converter power port (female) is 2.5mm where the el cheap battery I got from eBay is using 1.4mm plug cable (male) and I have to modify it a bit.

Let me know if you still need more clarification ok.

We seem to be getting criticism for the fact that DSLR manufacturers (and not video camera manufacturers) are unwilling, or unable to output a clean, standard HDMI signal out of their cameras. The only thing we are claiming is that we can record from a valid HDMI source. Of course it's frustrating that more DSLR cameras don't provide a suitable signal, but I don't think it's fair to blame us for that!

The advice I give everyone is to go to a Ninja reseller and test your camera with it. No-one is going to make you buy a Ninja if you test it in the shop and it doesn't work. If any reseller refuses to let you test your camera with a Ninja, let me know. But I can't see it being a problem - it's what I would want to do if I were going to buy one.

What I would also do, knowing what an incredible difference the Ninja can make to your workflow and to video quality, is to buy a camera that does work with it. I realize that not everyone has the budget for this right now, but if you're thinking of getting a camera in the near future, why not get one that works with the Ninja?

Testing every camera is a MASSIVE task. We haven't done it yet. We're working our way though them, and this process will probably take quite a lot longer, meanwhile, I'm sure we'll get reports coming in and when we'll publish them. (We'll note whether they've been verified by us or not).

Finally, I've seen reports that the Ninja comes with a 500GB drive. This is wrong: Atomos does not sell storage. You can probably buy it cheaper than we can. Resellers are NOT supposed to bundle storage with the Ninja UNLESS they give you the option of buying it without storage. 500GB of spinning drive is very cheap. No-one would be giving away 500GB of SSD.

If anyone has any other questions, don't hesitate to ask, and I look forward to meeting you at NAB, when we'll be launching the HD-SDI Samurai!

Hi Dave!

I have been interested on the Ninja for quiet sometime now but just didn't have the time and the money to get one just yet. All though Ninja is very cheap compared to other manufactures out there.
I have been reading a lot about the Ninja and now that the people are buying it I notice that you still haven't update it the firm ware to record 25p. Maybe you have by now but I thought to ask you directly.
I have a Panasonic af101 and would like to get the Ninja for better recording signal, not to mention the transferring the MTF files to PRO REZ, which took ages to trans-code.
Any news on that?
Very best regards

Hi @valonqe,

Thanks for your question

We have a software release coming in about a week that will enable 25p. But what's interesting is that there are very few cameras that genuinely output 25p from HDMI (the Red One is the only one we've found). All the others, when you set the camera to record at 25p, actually output 50i. But the good news is that this 50i signal actually still contains all the original progressive footage, because the two fields that make up the interlaced frame are actually derived from the same original progressive frame. When you put these two fields back together on the timeline or on any type of display, the picture looks progressive.

So, to sum up, you can record 25p from an AF101 with a Ninja now!

We now have a very large number of customers using the Ninja with an AF101, and they're getting great results. Dave Shapton

Colin,

We've decided to consolidate all the features and fixes we were working on into a single, big firmware update which we'll be releasing soon. I've tested the Beta version and it's a big advance. It obviously includes playback, which itself has some great features. All of this has delayed the release but you'll find it's well worth it.

We don't have any news about Stripper at this time.
