This guys badly need 1080p50 and 1080p60 support.
As all modern cameras will be shotting in this format (GH2, AF-100, few other uncoming models).

If they made a Cineform version, I would buy it. Does it record uncompressed or H264? Or is it ProRes only...

The deal beaker for me is no 1080 25p for pal countries. They are neglecting a big part of the world with this...

"The Ninja by-passes in-camera compression to record your pristine, uncompressed images straight from the HDMI connector of your DSLR or camcorder directly to Apple ProRes – while you’re recording!"

Do they know something we don't? Since when do the VDSLRs output full HD through HDMI?

...i have the same problem I live in Switzerland only 1080i, maybe they knitting later a firmware upgrade ?

The marketing copy on this device would make one believe dSLRs output flawless HDMI that can actually be recorded. This is generally not true.

Correction price is 1001$ and 795 Euro
HDMI 1.3 is deep Color
And ists not so easy to get full HD:
Canon 5d is not HD only SD whyle you recording trough the HDMI Output
Canon 7D is not 1920 x 1080 HDMI during recording the Picture is smaller and you see the AF Box in white plus Red dot recorded
Sony Nex 5 have HDMI Output with the Red dot recorded
SONY NEX 10 can recorded witout the red dot, as far as I know

If it can do 1080i50, it can do 1080p25.

It would be the same as any camera that can record 30p within 60i.

I have talked to those guys during IBC.
Their comment regarding a "cineform version": They have no way to verify how popular cineform really is. So for now they will NOT invest in a new architecture only pro res.
I have also mentioned the misleading info regarding VDSLR HDMI output.

Thanks.

Johnnie

So what did they have to say about this? I find this a very unethical business practice, some poor shmuck may buy it, not having enough knowledge, only to find out later that their VDSLR won't output full HD through HDMI.

I have spend 30 minutes talking and listening to the company CEO (the company is made of 2 people. Him and his marketing partner).

All I can say is: I wish them good luck.

Not necessarily. DVCPRO HD, for example, recorded 1080 50i, and panasonic had to do some sort of recording trickery for the dvcpro HD capture 25p. 1080 25p native is different than 1080 50i 25, if not for memory space sake.

Why would the memory space requirements for 1080i50 be any different from 1080p25?

I could be wrong, but it seems like the exact same amount of lines are being recorded in either case.

It is not like the difference between 1080i60 and native 1080p24, where pull-down frames have to be recorded in order to fit the 24 frames within the 60 fields.

But that is completely different from Panasonic having to redesign their camera to output 1080p25. Obviously the camera has to know how to output the 1080p25 as 1080i50.

doesn't look like there is LTC connection or am i wrong? if no, then that's a deal breaker right there, plus it looks like it's using consumer grade touch screen at this price point. Good luck with that in the extreme cold and heat. Ever try using a touch screen phone when it's below 0 outside... give me buttons any day.

On their website (bottom) it says it's a registered Hong Kong company... are those two guys Europeans or Chinese/Honkis? I've sent them a email to get some more insight and see if I can get a demo sample for a review.

What I also find a bit strange is that they basically say CF cards are not good enough for high bitrate recording to such a device. Apparently it's good enough for the likes of Nanoflash and co. Really would love to get hands on one to see how well it works with different kinds of cameras.

What you says makes sense, I'm no engineer, but I think there's something else going on in the recording codec part. In FCP, there are specific settings for Prores 1080 50i and prores 1080 25p, for example. Now would be a good time for someone more in the know of engineering and codecs to shime in :)

You raise a very good question: The AF100 records 1080 25p, but does it output 1080 25p on hdmi and hd-sdi?
