HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

I don;t have the GH2 or Ninja but I think it's still a bag of hurt getting a proper signal out of the HDMI from the GH2.

Got my Ninja yesterday. Tested it, and I have following issues:

1) Doing quick panning with my camera (JVC GY HM100), made the recording on the Ninja terrible. I´ve got a lot of tearing of the image (upper part). Any firmware update ??

2) Naming convension on the files needs to be changed. The current naming is not usable for me. Why not using seperate names on the files (YYYYMMDD_XXX) ?

Bjarne

We're sorry about the issues with the tearing in the image. We've identified this problem and have fixed it in release version 1.04, which is available from our website. It only ocurred rarely and it too a while to be able to make it happen consistently. As soon as we did this, we were able to fix it.

We are looking at naming conventions and are going to make changes.

What is the mount the Ninja is on in this video: http://vimeo.com/22343270

I've never seen one that you could move around like that which a.) wouldn't flop over as soon as you let it go and b.) the Ninja/monitor/whatever wouldn't quickly work its way loose.

There are two quarter-inch tripod threads on the Ninja, on the top and the bottom of the unit. There are all sorts of supports and mounts you can buy - some better than others. I'm pretty sure with the number of Ninjas being sold that there will be some good third-party solutions available soon - if not already.

Does this also really apply to the Sony NEX VG10E (one of those cameras mentioned) - does anyone know or use this with the Ninja? Thanks
And none fo these are really 1080p in resolution, at any time. Video resolution of the best of the above stated, in terms of actual resolved pixels, is more like somewhere between 480p and 720p, with lots of artifacts

Definitely. The VG10 uses a higher-resolution sensor (same as in the NEX5) with line-skipping and down-rezzing just like all DSLRs.
The 5D, for example, is a rough ~1400 in horizontal resolution.

This is measured resolution, not image dimensions (which are in fact 1920x1080), if that was unclear.

Thanks Lee - so no point in using a NEX VG10 with Ninja really. How about the Cannon VC20 and JVC HM100 (both of which I have) - is their HDMI resolution any better?

We have users with a JCV HM100. They seem pretty happy with their pictures. I've seen screenshots - but, no, I don't have any objective comparative information except that you would not expect to see any motion artifacts with the Ninja footage.

Ninja logging system headache!

Ninja logging system headache!

Please can I implore Atomos to change that system for numbering takes?! Please take a look at how JVC HM100 uses the shot logging system. I really hate having each individual clip wrapped in a folder before i can get at it. If you must keep what you have in v 1.04 fine - just give me another option whereby each time i press the record button I get given a new number for each clip without it's individual enclosing file/folder. And keep them rolling on a single long list in a single file. I don't care if you call them shots or takes or whatever (I happen to call them clips). Wrap all my day of shooting into one file and let me import into FCP all my .mov clips together as a nice long list with numbers that continue from 001 to 999. In addition, and when I want to, let me change the scene numbers or the shot numbers as I wish and start afresh. But, for now, please don't make me go into FCP and extract each .mov clip one at a time before I can start editing. Thanks also for a great product that, hopefully, can only get better with updates!

We're changing this. Thanks for your feedback! We've had a lot of feedback (still only from a very small proportion of users) and there are certainly ways we can improve this. We've had quite a few good suggestions and we'll implement a new scheme that pleases the maximum number of people consistent with what's technically possible. We can't give a date for when this will be done - we're still considering all the suggestions - but it will happen.

LANC remote

LANC remote

Satisfied with my Ninja after using it for a couple of weeks (exept for the file naming). Question:

I need a LANC remote for the Ninja. Any suggestions for a START/STOP Lanc-controller ?I've been trying my old StealthZoom (by VariZoom), connected to LANC Remote, but this doesn't work...

Thanks Lee - so no point in using a NEX VG10 with Ninja really.

I don't know if I'd go that far. The AF100 sensor works the same way (but is supposedly much better at it than the VG10 or Canons) and people still use external recorders with it.

Granted AF100 output is 4:2:2 whereas the VG10/DSLRs you're getting the same 4:2:0 as the onboard codec, but you're still avoiding a ton of compression.

I wouldn't buy a Gemini for it, but at the Ninja's price...

I'm not saying the processing is identical or anything.

I was saying that like the DSLRs (and VG10, in this example) the AF100 has a large-megapixel-count sensor that's heavily downsampled and that doesn't stop it from being used to great effect with external recorders.

And that therefore my comment about the VG10 sensor didn't necessarily mean he couldn't/shouldn't use an external recorder with it.

You're pretty much right about those points: you can't trigger "record" through HDMI. We haven't publicly announced the full specification and functionality of the HD-SDI model, the Samurai, yet so I can't give you details I'm afraid (but will be able to soon). SDI will, of course, give you longer cable runs, and is a locking connector. The Ninja and Samurai are intrinsically touchscreen devices, so they're always going to have screens, but you don't have to use them as monitors. But I completely take your point about wanting to keep it in your pocket, and remote-record would solve that. Finally, of course there is no difference in quality between HD-HDMI: they are both uncompressed 4:2:2 formats and will handle 10 bit resolution where it is supplied by the source.

Dave

Yes but an EX3 only has an SDI source, and so does an F3 unless I am mistaken - most pro-ish and above cameras only have good SDI out, not HDMI. I for one will wait for the Samurai.

Ninja users - anyone know of some comparison footage for keying? Been doing a lot of greenscreen with the HMC150, and the artifacts in fine details are a killer. I'm curious if 422 would be a noticeable difference in that department?

I'm afraid I don't have any footage to hand that would demonstrate this but thanks for the suggestion - we should get some. A couple of points to think about here (which have cropped up in other Ninja comparisons). Key advantages with ProRes are better colour resolution (ie 4:2:2 as opposed to 4:2:0 in most cases) and the absence of motion artifacts. You'll also notice fewer issues (eg "ringing") around sharp edges. Even if your source material is 8 bit, the fact that all ProRes in the Ninja is 10 bit will help with subsequent processing, especially with Chroma keying.

But don't make the mistake of thinking (as others have done) that the Ninja will cause your footage to be less noisy if your source is noisy as well! I have seen at least one comparison where the Ninja didn't appear to have a significantly lower noise floor than the compressed footage, but this was almost certainly because the source (ie the sensor!) was noisy. The Ninja just faithfully records this noise.

Overall, though, and with a good camera, you will find that the Ninja does a good job with Green Screen workflows. If I am able to get some good footage soon, I'll post it.

Thanks for the info - yep, hundreds of posts here about combating noise with the HMC; I just did a lengthy post regarding keying 150 footage with screen grabs of the things I'm working around; motion artifacts and very obvious compression around hair and fine details are something a 422 workflow may help with.

I'd imagine that some downloadable footage - same scene from the SD card and from the Ninja, just a second of hair, transparency, and details - would be a great test piece to sell the Ninja as an affordable keying aid.

I'm seriously considering your product - how does it function with a passive HDMI splitter? I use one of the cheap male cable to dual female jacks in a plastic block when I use two monitors on set (works just fine) - I'd love to not add one more powered gizmo to my setup - and the HMC just demands a calibrated monitor for critical work.

Well, not all splitters are equal, and some can cause problems, but some do work, I'm told. I don't have any reliable information on this though. If anyone else has tried this I'd be interested to know. I'm sure most Ninja dealers would let you try one.

I'll try to get some greenscreen samples for our site.
