HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

Well, you can buy an HDSDI Samurai and an HDMI Ninja for the price of some of the other recorders out there (especially when you look at what's included - touchscreen, batteries etc). BTW, we can implement almost any codec, and whether we do will depend on demand, but we've found that ProRes is by far the most requested at this time.

Fair enough! A true cross platform codec like DNxHD or Cineform will be a worthy option. I echo Ralph's request - a lossless codec option like Lagarith or UT will be ideal! Though it is not exactly an acquisition codec, I am also extremely impressed by x264 10-bit lossless performance, speed and efficiency.

Just bought it on B&H, I'll start posting some clips from the AF100 / other soon as I receive it.

I'm on PC and even though prores can be read on a PC, I would prefer a native PC codec. Some possiblities to consider are UT Lossless Video Codec, Blackmagic's MJPEG codec, and perhaps a high bit rate MPEG2. I would love to hear other people's suggestions.
I chimed in earlier with Cineform... but DNxHD would seem like a logical next choice given Avid's marketshare and the fact some other NLE's (like Premiere) can use it.

I think it's important to remember that it's a great device for what it is. I think Atomos has done a great job designing something that is: 1. Affordable, 2. Well built (with all the accessories that you really need included) and 3. It's available, at least were not talking about this like a phantom product that never seems to be out (ie: RED SCARLET).

I think my clients are going to love it, hopefully I'll receive it in-time that the Washington Mystics do their media day late april, I'm scheduled to shoot their opening film on a 40 foot green screen, and it would be kind of cool to see what the AF-100 / NINJA combo can do on a "real" shoot.

What I'm politely suggesting are NON Quicktime codecs for PC. Quicktime on the PC is sluggish compared to Directshow. So, I personally, would have no interest in DNxHD, which is Quicktime based. (although it would certainly be useful for Avid people)

What version of the HDMI spec does the Ninja's input support (i.e. 1.3, 1.2, etc)?

This is important information for those of us that would like to use this device to record (non-HDCP protected) RGB material coming out of a GPU in addition to YUV signals from video cameras.

FYI, AJA lists the Ki Pro Mini's HDMI input as supporting the 1.3a standard, meaning it should be suitable for this. I'd rather buy a Ninja given its lower price point and built-in monitoring, but I need to know this information before I make a purchase.

No, Ninja supports 24p natively. It does not do 1080i60 PsF pulldown on the fly. The recently announced Saumurai WILL do this in real-time.

I think there's some confusion here. From my understanding, all video coming out the HDMI is coming out within 60i regardless of framerate. In order to record 24p natively from this you have to remove the pulldown on the fly. I'm not talking about the HDSDI or PsF at all here.

Will the Ninja record true 24p (23.98) from the Af-100 using the HDMI output?
If so, it must do so by removing the pulldown on the fly as the 24p is output inside a 60i stream.
Can you confirm this?

Thats the $1000 question :^)

Oh ok, I thought it was captured in a 60i stream. So the Ninja removes the pulldown on the fly?

Dave, question on Samurai. When you playback will you get signal through SDI out or is playback restricted to internal monitor only ?

Thanks, Nick

Nick,

Samurai playback is on its own screen only. The second SDI terminal is for loop-though. The Samurai's screen is double the linear resolution of the Ninja, and 5 inches as opposed to 4.3

Hey Dave, anymore thoughts on our native 24p questions?

Yes.

I think the way to deal with this - because it's such a complex subject - is we're going to put a section in our FAQ on the website (which I'll draw your attention to when it's done). There are so many nooks and crannies to this whole thing that it's better to give it comprehensive treatment in one place. Give us a few days and you'll be able to read the whole thing.

I really hope you will be able to go from recording to Timeline as they suggest instead of another step for reverse telecining which would be a big bummer :(.
