HD Timelapse

The lens I used was the EOS 17-85mm. Its not the best lens but it does the job. I have a couple other lenses but this one is the one I use for the timelapse. I need to get some faster wider lenses to do some of the new stuff I'm planning to do.

Yep, that's the reason why its not working right now. In fact my whole site is down right now because of all the traffic. But I guess someone made a torrent of it on digg in both the 720p and 480p. So look for it there untill I get my site back up.

I shoot in medium jpg on an 8.2MP camera. So that's 2544x1696. I processed the images in Motion and then did all the editing and music in FCP.

since your image was posted on digg, I'm all over your work 24/7, bought myself a new tripod new timelaspessoftware fro my eos 350d and going out in the night somewhere next week. However not being an apple user, I was wondering if I could make this also with premiere pro, and did you use use each and evey single frame from your recordings, I can't understand that with a 2 sec shutter you have so litle smudhing of lights. What kind of work did you do on the photos in Motion? Apreciate it you us teaching :)

again, inspiring work, for that alone thanks....

Mimezine, you might be able to use Premiere Pro to do this kind of stuff. I'm not sure because I've never used it before. I did use every frame I had taken in all my shots and I don't speed up any of that stuff. There was no work done on the photos in Motion other than putting the frames all together.

I really don't want to teach anyone how to do this stuff because I believe once you figure out how the basics are done and you go out and do it, you can learn much more that way.

Thanks, I apreciate your feedback and understand your argument for learning more by doing, you are abslutely right, going out today, hope to post someday soon something similar to your work :)

thanks again!

Hi Drew,

Can you tell me if its possible to bypass Motion and just bring all those frames straight into FCP? Thanks in advance,

- Nicholas

Great footage by the way! Really good work!

Ok.. this is going to sound silly - but I tried this a year ago with a cheap still camera and had to manually push the trigger every 10 seconds. It came out good, but I had to stablize the footage because I "touched" the camera every shot.... so not so good. Yours is amazing though.

I had forgotten about that experiment until I saw this. Now I have a better still camera (Sony R1) and am dying to try it again.

On the bypassing motion question, Quicktime Pro can load a series of photos and save it as a quicktime movie. Just go to "File" -> "Open Image sequence..." Then choose the first image. Then it will ask you for a frame rate. Then save as, or export it. The only thing is that they have to have sequential numbers in the file name, it will stop importing if it hits a missing number. But the numbers don't have to start at 1. Something like DSC00251.JPG, DSC00252.JPG.. which is the standard sony naming convension.

After that you can take it into FCP and drop it on a DVCPRO HD sequence for resizing and color correction. You can even do a move on it in there.

I used to use FCP to do all my timelapse with but I found Motion to be faster at puttting the frames togther and easier to mess with them.

Cool... I like motion too.

I was just saying that if you don't have motion you can put the frames together right in Quicktime Pro.

So that timer onlly works on the Cannon? I've been trying to find a timer that will work with the ACC port on my Sony R1, but no luck. I've heard it's like a LANC and considered making my own timer, but who wants to experiment on a $800 camera.

I've done some footage at the airport, but it tunred out to be too dark,

but the lights are not smudging with a 2sec shutter :)

I used a 14 apperture and 800 ISO setting

what kind of apperture setting have you used and what kind of ISO setting?

All other settings are manualy set and focus is also manualy. Hope you can help me out once more with some settings.

BTW I'm using a 350D EOS , the software that for timelapse is not adequate enough , so I've downlaoded SLRremote, this is great software for the job :)

I think most of my stuff was between 100-400 ISO. It gets a little to grainy for me with anything above 400. I've used 3200 before with some star timelapse and the light it picked up was amazing. But the noise in the picture was way too crazy. Not sure what apature I used. Just play with it a little more and you'll find something that works for you.

thanks, I will do that, I'm also not satisfied with the quality of the photo's , I think it is beceuae due to the quality of the standard 18-55 lens that comes with the 350, the lens you used the 17-85 is that a lens with glass spheres or plastic ones? Your pictures are so crisp!

thnaks again (last question, I promise ;-) )

For all of my timelapse I do use the 17-85mm lens. The 18-55mm is crap but I'm sure if you really set things up right you could still get some nice images out of it. To be honest the 17-85mm isn't that great either. I just like the focus ring on it better than the front focus of the 18-55mm.

crazy stuff drew. I recently experimented a little with time lapsing and I've learned a whole lot:)

please forgive the wobbling; I don't have a remote yet:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4253137656148779740

As you can see, the quality of the videos is less than decent. What workflow should I use in order to maximize video quality? Should I resize all images before uploading into the video program, or upload the full size JPEGs and let the video software resize them as it compiles the video?

Also, when shooting in gradually changing light levels like sunset for example, the shots taken towards the end become too dark; and changing camera exposure settings midway in the shoot would show up abruptly in the final video. Is there a techinque to solve this problem? Thanks man.

Peterish, you have the right idea on how to do it. But yes you need something to controll the camera so you can get rid of that shaking.

To get the best video that I know of I just let Motion or FCP do the resizing for me. I just change the size of the frames in an HD timeline.

BTW, my 720p version is back up on my site.
