HD Timelapse

You could do some amazing stop motion with animate objects (meaning actors/people) with this technique.
It would be long and painstaking, and continuity would be hard, but it would have a very surreal look, and it would look like film. I recently shot a stop motion piece with inanimate objects using a D70, and Boix iStopMotion software with a Powerbook.
The software allows you to toggle back and forth between the current and previous shots/stills you took, and playback in realtime what you shot already. Instant gratification of a technique that was once not so instant.

Fiercecurry, I have been thinking about doing something like what you were talking about. I just really haven't had anything I wanted to do like that yet. I think Alex Proyas, the director of "The Crow" and "Dark City", did a short using the same kind of method. I believe its called "Groping". It looked really weird and when cars drove by they looked like streeks of light.

Hi Drew,

I just saw your footage and it's stunning. Can you just quickly explain to me how you did it. I understand you shot with a Canon EOS 20D. Did you program the camera to take shots automatically at intervals? Or are you using some external device to trigger the camera to do that??? I also have that camera and would love to do the same experiment. Thank you very much in advance.

There's a wired remote controller that Canon makes for their higher up cameras, meaning it doesn't work with the Reble 350D. Look on B&H for it. The model number is TC-80N3. Hope that helps.

Here's the link to CANON's FREE EOS capture software (both PC and Mac):

EOS Capture 1.5 (WINDOWS, or OS-X)

"EOS Capture 1.5 is software exclusively for EOS Digital cameras that enables you to control the camera from your computer using the remote shooting function with the timer or interval timer, or to specify the camera settings."

Vidled, that software you be cool if I wanted to take my computer out everytime I wanted to do some timelapse. But some of the spots I shoot are a little on the ghetto side.

Justin, I did post this in the DVXuser News section but someone moved it into this section. Not sure why but I like having it here because more people see it.

Nicholas, you can bring the frames into FCP. But Motion from my experience, works better at processing the frames.

Thanks very much Drew. I'm off right now to get that same remote control device you have and do similar tests. Congratulations again on your footage. It really captured everybody's imagination. Reminds me of that beautiful movie I saw once called "Koyaanisqatsi" (Life Out of Balance), full of time-lapse scenes.

Hi Drew,

A few of us on this page were still curious what your interval setting is. You did mention that your shutter speed was 2 seconds, but what was your interval setting? Every 2 seconds? 5 seconds???

Thank you very much in advance,

- Nicholas

Ok, so you've gone and asked me to "think". I was trying to avoid that. But I did, and now we're all in major trouble...

Lol...sorry BenB, I didn't mean to get that brain goin. Now I'm sure you won't be able to go to sleep now.
