am unloading all my HD cams 2 gh2 2gh1 hpx170 hp hvx200a my entire hd collection cams, going to 2k 4k cams from now on ,90% of indies now being shot in my country are all in 2k minimum, so for me the hd cam love affair and years are over. Will miss the hack talks . Will switch now to a new thread. Goodbye fellows!

Haha. Whatever floats your boat. IMO 90% of an audience will give jack diddly crap if it's shot on 1080p or 4k equipment, let alone 2k. You realize 2k is BARELY bigger than 1080p, right (see diagram below)? Now the BMCC is 2.5K so maybe you're referring to that, and at least you can argue there's a bit more resolution there.

No, IMO the GH1, 2, or 3 are perfectly suitable in terms of image quality to project on any movie screen, and the 1080p pocket cinema camera with it's huge amount of dynamic range will be more than enough for all but the most fervent pixel peepers. It's been said time and time again, sure you want your image to look as good as posible, and sure there is a certain standard that people expect. Shooting a sprawling epic like gladiator on an MiniDV cam is silly. But that said it comes down to story, and I bet you that if Gladiator was shot on a GH2 in the capable hands of a top notch production crew, you'd never know the difference.

Sure, I'm thinking of getting my hands on the BMCC 4K, but if I can't make the movie I want to make on a GH2, I have no business going for a BMCC 4K anyway.

But, if you are selling your GH2s for a reasonable price, I'll gladly buy them from you.

Unloading your editing suite too? How much? Surely you aren't going to wait on 4k renders on anything you were using for your GH's. Anyhow, seeya man.

I don't know how much difference it makes when projected on the big screen, but that doesn't matter, does it. If distributors start demanding stuff in 4K, or otherwise they won't even consider it, then that's a problem. At that point, it makes no difference that the audience can't tell them apart, and that we are all happy with HD output. If so, then that's the case for shooting in 4K (and maybe more options in post). But is there any evidence that that's where distributors are heading these days?

LOL....this was meant to start something flaming looks like. But....I'll bite.

You do know that movies have been projecting in 2k for like.......evvvverrrrrr right? lol No matter if it was film or standard definition....movies have all been pretty much...projected at 2k. And as Mr. Kevin Lee is trying to say....you are going to need to change more than just your camera if you are planning to go 4K. Some time in the future I plan on getting a 4K cam as well. But...now? Why bother? As cheap and nice as the BMC 4K looks I have to pinch myself to remind me that RAW is bad enough. :)

...and WORD blazer003!!

How many of you have actually shot digital footage and then actually converted it to 35mm film stock and projected it in an actual theater as a test? Back starting with the DVX100, I have been doing that. I project it on a 30x60 foot screen at Raleigh Studios, I have to tell you, it is NOT the camera! It's the story. Standard Def from the DVX100 looked excellent and only got better with every camera that followed. As was noted previously, THE AUDIENCE DOES NOT CARE! It's not the equipment (except, maybe, for sound) - it's the content.

But the GH cameras are 4k cameras. They just happen to record 1080p off a 4k sensor. Native 2k cameras have less resolution than the 1080 from the GH3. The biggest advantage of 4k cameras is very clean 1080p output.

I would argue that if we could get raw off the GH3 sensor it would look pretty darn good compared to a 1080p down convert from a 4k camera.

Of the few hundred people I know, there are only a handful that have blu-ray players. I bought a blu-ray burner and I couldn't give a bd disk to a single person. Burned 5 disks and haven't touched it in over a year and a half. Fewer than a dozen have ever watched one of my films on anything but a cell phone. Everyone is using tablets and cell phones to watch media these days. Bottom line is no one cares!

I'd love a 4k camera as I'm a pixel peeper from hell, but in the end of the day, it's completely lost on nearly anyone but us nut cases.

I'm getting a G6 and selling some of my canon L lenses in favor of an ultra light tool with simple workflow.

Cheers,
Pete

...And being able to re-frame your 1080 HD image in post.

To a certain degree yes but it is a myth that quality doesn't go down when you do this. This is basically the same exact thing that happens when you shoot with the ETC mode on the GH2 and GH3. Video from a GH2 looks better in normal mode than ETC mode because the down sampling masks noise and the lower resolution of a single sensor design which uses a bayer pattern. If you reframe 4k it will be noisier and have lower detail than if you down scaled the entire 4k frame to 1080. The only time I would really consider this a solid solution is when we get a 3 chip 4k camera. Even then noise and detail will still be a concern. The act of down sampling will always result in cleaner detail.

I have shot, composited and edited With RED and to me it's biggest advantage was always the raw file format and not so much the extra resolution. In fact my GH2 has been known to hold its own when shot side by side with the RED camera at the previous company I worked at.

I still stand by the statement that if we could get raw recording even at 1080 off of a GH camera people would be amazed at how good it actually is. Anybody that has shot raw stills on the camera will know just what the sensor is capable of.

I still shoot 720p exclusively for all my payed work and deliver over 3 million plays over the net to my audience every year from the GH1, GH2. No upgrade plans in the near future.
