HD look with dvx100

Hi Thatswutzout,

First get the most out of the DVX by buying/reading Barry Green's 'The DVX Book' and by studying the DVD that comes with it.

Then find discussion on ideal settings for uprezzing DVX footage on this subforum and experiment with that.

If you've found a look you like and that seems uprezzable to you, export it to a higher resolution file.

You can also buy Magic Bullet Instant HD. That's not realy expensive (99 dollars). This last suggestion can be combined with all of the above.

Hear, hear!

Light well, expose properly, white balance, compose your shots as best u can, etc.

I've seen a lot of HD footage that looks bad; always try to get the best possible footage in the can.

Interesting.....over the years we went from "film-look" to "HD look"

Yes to all above.

However, understand that the DVX is an SD camera and while it is amazing, it just doesn't naturally shoot at HD resolution. Even if you do all those things, your footage won't be as clear as an HVXs, although it will still look really good.

As for recommendations: definitely light well, get your colors right, MANUALLY FOCUS (sharp focus = $$$), and uprezz to 1280x720 when you export.

Good luck mang.

am I being a complete noob? how can you get the HD look when shooting SD?

You can "uprezz" when you export, meaning export your video in a bigger size than it was shot in. I take my 16x9 videos from my DVX and export them at 1280x720 with square pixels when I export from Premiere. It also fools internet hosts (vimeo, etc) into thinking the video is HD.

It makes it look a little bit better.

Any good good examples of workflows and results of uprezzing DVX footage?
Seems like I remember some differences in the 16x9 abilities of DVXa vs b..maybe the vintage of DVX influences quality possible?

did you try searching the forum?
if not, search (specially in the footage section) and you'll see some good examples.

btw, I've also uprezzed a footage before so check out the video I did as well.
it's not really that hard.

Check out my vimeo page (sig) - they may not be "good" examples (I try...) but the last bunch of vids I've uploaded have been uprezzed to HD.

Hi Blondie.

Im using Vegas Pro 9 and shoot in squueze mode.

I just tried rendering a video with the pixel aspect as square and when it finishes rendering there is no picture just the sound.

this was using the usual Sony AVC setting that I always use.

How come there's no picture??? Thanks.

Hmmm that's strange. I don't use Vegas, I use Premiere, so unfortunately I can't provide you with any exact info. What was your resolution? What was the output file type? When I do it, I export to Quicktime, .mov, maybe try that?

I found out about the square pixels from this: http://www.vimeo.com/help/compression.

DVX100B in Squeeze, uprezzed in Avid- exported as 1280x720, compressed at bitrate of 5000 or 6000.

Sony AVC MP4 with it set at the highest HD setting.

Hmmmm I'm not sure then man, I'm sorry I can't help you out more. I wish I could. I guess my only advice has got to be keep messing around with export settings and try and make it work. I've never had a problem with it.

You can also uprezz in streamclip, but that's not as effective.
