Has the DSLR Hybrid craze effectively killed the desire for a Red Scarlet camera?

I know, I know, it's total b.s. Everyone knows that antigravity machines will be the bomb, and anyone still using a trampoline are a bunch of wannabe air jumpers. Sure, they can still reach high, but the antigravs will reach several feet higher, and only cost three times as much, and allow you to overcrank or undercrank the speed of propulsion up to 100x. Anyone still using human muscle movements (e.g., a skipping motion) to become airborne should be ashamed of themselves.

Again, no point in really discussing it.

It doesn't exist currently, and there is no defined time when it will exist. They don't have plans on when it will go into production, nor do they have a company that could put it in production anyway.

Epic comes first, and the Epic project is on an indeterminate hold while they work out a bug that could take a day or could take months. It's already delayed the project by two months, with no definite end in sight (such is the case with programming bugs).

So the Scarlet that has been announced, may be late, or may never exist. Then again, what's been announced anyway? A bunch of details that got revamped and changed, and then got revamped and changed, and then got revamped and changed, and then we were told that everything they told us would change again, and it's been 7 months since then. Which means, those arguing about what a Scarlet "is" or "does" really, truly, cannot have any idea what it is or does.

And there is not a question in my mind that the longer it is delayed, the less relevant the 2/3" becomes. The closer we get to December and the AF100 launching, the less interested anyone will be in a comparatively tiny 2/3" chip.

But -- who says Scarlet is even going to have a 2/3" model? Maybe they will revamp it substantially prior to its actual release.

In the meantime -- why worry about it? Why stress about it? It's like arguing about whether the forthcoming antigravity machine is better than today's trampoline. Sure, obviously antigravity would be cooler than a trampoline -- but it doesn't exist. So just buy the trampoline and have a bleepload of fun with it, and when the antigravity machine is released, we'll talk. Or maybe we'll just go out and bounce on the trampoline anyway.

The day the Scarlet is actually released, I guarantee you that everybody who has EVER heard of it, will be interested in it. Reviews will be everywhere. You'll know it when it happens.

Until then, it's a pointless discussion.

no offense barry but you "are" discussing it yourself. i see no problem with banter back and forth about the Scarlet even though its a lot of speculation. plus, with the latest post by Jannard over on reduser, i think there is much more room for speculation/discussion as to whether the Scarlet will ever see the light of day. maybe some that have been on hold for the last few years might just finally decide to move on. i myself have never had a serious interest in a RED camera but find RED a very interesting company and would like to see them succeed.

Someone on Reduser asked about the Scarlet fixed-lens camera. Here's Jarred's answer:
Sorry man.. All focus is on Epic right now. We need to get Epic buttoned up and out the door, or there will be no Scarlet.

That says pretty much everything that anyone needs to know, doesn't it? The Scarlet is on hold. They're focusing on Epic. If they can't get the Epic issues sorted, there won't be a Scarlet (or an Epic, obviously, as they're not going to release something that doesn't perform to their standards). There is nothing new coming on the Scarlet, they're not even working on it. The company's priority, and all hands on deck, are working on the Epic. Even if they worked out all the issues, they don't have a manufacturing partner for the Scarlet anyway.

Everyone should move on, immediately. Because there's absolutely no downside to moving on. If you have something to shoot, go shoot it. Use what's available today. What possible benefit is there in waiting? If it does someday come out, and it's better than what you're using now, you sell what you've got and upgrade at that time. It's not like you "lose" anything by going with what's on the market today.

It's like folks standing outside in a line waiting to buy tickets to a concert, when the promoter announces "sorry guys, the concert is canceled, the performer's sick. Go home. When they're ready to reschedule, you'll see the announcements in the paper." The reasonable choice in that situation is to go home. You've lost nothing. I guess some people could stick around and complain about how much time they spent in line waiting, but -- to what purpose? The concert's cancelled. There will not be any tickets sold. Go home. You aren't going to lose your place in line, because there isn't any line.

A week or a month or a year from now, when they've got all their issues sorted out, they'll announce a "new concert" and you can then go stand in line again.

But what purpose would it serve, for those folks to stay in the line, waiting blindly for the day that they may or may not announce that new concert? Don't those people have lives, and jobs, and families?

i myself have never had a serious interest in a RED camera but find RED a very interesting company and would like to see them succeed.
They already have. They've turned the high-end cinematography world upside down. And I'm confident when they do release a product, it will be competitive with the best that's available at that time.

Yes! We as serious film makers, photographers are forgetting one thing: The public does give a crap about codecs, bit rates,or what camera a good story is shot on.

All they want is the film to look professional and not amateurish. A lot of talented people both young and old have a chance to make a quality movie with decent production values if not excellent. You know it just tickles the Hell out of me when I see all these comparisons against this camera against that camera. The Red in my opinion will be DOA because there is not a large enough market for a pricey camera, whereas the 7D the MarkIV D and the GH1's or 2's(lol) are in reach of a lot aspiring film makers budgets. This year 2010 is the beginning of a revolution for independent film making. I compare this year's remarkable trend to the MIDI music craze of the mid 1980's where virtually the digital music revolution move some of the big record labels into the history books. The ability for talented musical artists at that time to record and produce their own CD's in their bedroom was available to anyone who had the inspiration without trying to look for a sponsor to help pay for expensive studio time. Today, that is what's happening in the film industry this year. The Canon,Panasonic cameras are providing opportunity for artists who have the talent but don't have the budget to rent Panavisions,Arriflexes, rent expensive Arri lighting and with these cameras you still have to convert the film to HD. The hybrid DSLR's are a breath of fresh for budget challenged artist like me and others. Granted with some of the capabilities of what the Red is expected to have,it will advantage for some effects, but as for a chance for artist to film their dreams without some big shot giving it the green light after 8 years on the shelf or expensive camera rentals that required big deposits, the Hybrid DSLRS with high ISOs are a godsend.

Scarlet and even Red (maybe) are cheap

there are hundreds of operators lugging $50k plus betacams around the world shooting news, corporate and advertising regularly shooting to sat vans that cost hundreds of K

BTW what is actually the difference between epic and scarlet

surely you make epic and scarlet is just the same but with a lower spec chip and maybe a cheaper chasis

there is no reason that once epic works scarlet will just fall into place too

good luck to Jim, I agree the canons are (professionally) emabarrasing - but they are also here and affordable and that is great and I have two
