Hard drive on it's side

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
This may be a stupid questions, but I have the LaCie Quadra Hard Drive..And I'd like to know If I can place it on it's side?

It makes the work space a little easier in my editing room, and I don't know if this will hut the drive in anyway.

Thanks,

Robbie

It shouldn't. Inside should just be a regular ol' hard drive and they're not particular.

Although running a drive in one position for a long time, then chaging its orientation is not necessarily a good thing. But I mean a long time...

From a basic mechanical analysis:

when the magnetic head arms are placed horizontally:

(1) Both vertical and horizontal component forces are applied Uniform, because gravity (@9.81 m/s) acts perpendicular to the magnetic arms.

when the magnetic head arms are placed vertically:

(1) Both vertical and horizontal component forces are NON Uniform, this is because gravity acts in a co-planar direction vector thus:

Ft = [X*Cos*theta] + [Y*Sin*theta + g]

This cyclic stress force on the magnetic arms will likely reduce the Hard disk's MTBF{1}

Real-world experience has defied engineering prediction; my sidewise drives have actually outlasted my horizontally-situated drives (same brand, model, etc).

Not statistically meaningful, though.

Either way, just be sure to place the drive in your freezer for 24 hours prior to changing it's orientation to ensure no data is lost.

:D

Also a couple of sharp taps with a hammer help to set the data more securely, before it goes into the freezer...

then just before plugging it back in, blow into the air vents. works every time. your games should play flawlessly.

I now understand you're custom title.
