Panasonic AMQ or PQ tape?

People will disagree, but I run PQ all day long and never get dropouts. I never got them with AMQ tapes either, but I'll keep my money. Of course, the stuff I film isn't mostly once in a lifetime things.

I think that the amq has a 1dB higher signal output than the pq. This means that you get a slight increase in quality because there is a tiny bit less compression when the camera writes to the tape. It's not really a huge difference but it can be noticable, especially when uprezing to HD later. I use amq tapes because I uprez to HD. I would say that if you are staying in SD get the pq because they cost $3 less per tape. If you want the absolute best quality, go with the amq. Oh, and I just remebered that the pq offers a longer duration tape at 83 minutes but it costs the same as the 63 minute amq.

There is absolutely no difference in quality when recording to MiniDV tape. The only thing that matters is if you suffer dropouts or not. Either you get the signal from the camera or you don't, there will be no difference in compression.

Having just run out of my supply of MQ tapes, I recently ordered a batch of PQs.

I agree with Will. I also run the PQs never had a problem. I have posted this before, but I switched to PQs after I worked with MTV networks on a 3 day shoot and they used all PQ tapes in a couple DVX 100Bs

I go through about 100 Mini DV tapes a year. That is not very many but when you are saving 2 or 3 bucks a tape. That is a noticeable difference at the end of the year.

Is it safe to mix Amq And PQ tapes without using a head cleaner between using both tapes. I have some of both of the tapes, also i have a bunch of some of those cheaper Panny EJ Tapes. Would it be fine to use all these tapes in my dvx without using a tape head cleaner between those different tapes? Are they all the same lube? I heard all panny tapes are dry and i heard some are wet? Can someone that knows all the answers to my questions for SURE please tell me the answers. Thanks

You can use all Pana tapes in your cam without having to clean the heads when switching.

BTW: I spoke to my Pana representative here in Munich and he gave me the advise to use the new SQ tapes. They have the same technical specs as the AMQ but at the price of the PQ's...

Then what is difference between sq and amq, i dont think they would make the same tape change the name and make it cost less. i never seen sq tapes anywere yet. Just PQ EJ AMQ tapes.
