EVA1: Hands on with working EVA1 Updated for Day 2 shooting.

I've used an Arri follow focus and RedRockMicro servo FF on my C300 with still lenses and CN-E primes and never had play in the lens mount/image shift. I don't think you really need high-torque motors with the type of glass that's probably going to be on an EVA-1.

Did you read what I wrote or did I not make myself clear? I know 100% that you need a focus puller and a remote ff to focus this camera when on a gimbal. What I'm questioning is the reason to use this inferior mount that is going to rattle the image like a graffiti can when you're using it with a remote ff or a handheld ff. This is the elephant in the room no one is talking about.

Should I not care just because it might be a very very good deal for 5.7k?

Beem using FIZ units, follow focuses, etc. on the EVA1 for weeks now. No play, no problem.

When I stated that there was a gap in our product line, I was referring to the functionality of the cameras, not the prices. Yes the GH5 is a fine camera, but it is also MFT sensor size, doesn't have Dual ISO, does not have 14+ stops of Dynamic Range and other features and functions. To put more functionality in a camera costs more money. Hey, I would love for us to be able to sell the EVA1 for even less but the price is in large part determined by how much it costs us to build the camera, in fact much moreso than any "market forces" as you cite.

Not all cameras are created equal, and it costs money to do this stuff.

Mitch some of us assume maybe wrongly that some elements in camera are literally selectable in firmware.

4K in the Sony f5 debacle for example would indicate that maybe our assumptions are not far from the mark - as it happens that "crippling" lost them a sale from me.

Personally I would assume frame rate, card write, and other things to be genuine limits.

My understanding is that high compression is more taxing than no or little compression. It takes effort to work out what data to destroy!

BM cameras may have a load of issues but high compression is not one of them - more "evidence".

I think you need to build trust between a "faceless Corp" and today's sophisticated audience that stuff actually costs money to do.

I agree. Unfortunately people want it all in a $2K camera and what we get these days is so good I understand why. Panasonic is in a very interesting position to have a line up that covers a lot of models and I hope as far as color goes they will improve on them matching. No other manufacture has color matching in a line up. It would be oh so good to have this in the Panasonic VariCam, EVA 1 and GH5. Features are one that separates the cameras and I don't feel thats a problem at all.

In my opinion, having the same sensor in different form factor variations is a more useful proposition. That way you have the exact same image whether you need to shoot from a car mount, shoulder, gimbal, drone, steadycam, dolly, crane or sticks. So there is no image compromise anywhere.

Then have a cheap camera which is a near enough match to use as a crashcam when needed.

Because as you said, just color matching alone across a line up is already difficult.

Being a Canon user/owner/operator for yeeeaaarrrs, I'll weigh in on the EF-mount lens shift thing because it's happened to me. But, there are qualifiers. The lenses were old and adapted and it was the adapters that were actually shifting. Also, lenses with plastic mounts. However, ~98% of the time, I don't experience lens shift on any of my EOS or other EF-mount cameras. It's never happened with any of my L lenses, it's never happened with very well-made adapters like my current EF-PL one. There's a reason the EOS EF bayonet mount is so successful: it works. Would I prefer a locking version of it? Absolutely. Because when that ~2% happens, it's frustrating. But, it's even more frustrating when you have a shiftless bayonet lock, but the stills lens you're using shifts and breathes and all that because it wasn't intended to be used in a motion picture environment. When I use my PL-mount lenses on, say, my 6D or BMCC or whatever, the aesthetic and experience are so much better than having to get by with a stills lens. The EF mount is fine. It really winds up being about the quality of the lens (and/or adapter) you're using. I bet those Cine EF lenses work a treat with the bayonet lock.

Totally agree if there ever is a problem then its not the mount its the bayonet on the lens. you can attach a 500mm L to a 5d and it locks completely.

Since lens weight/the EF mount has come up... I wonder if anyone has thoughts on the new Zeiss LWZ.3 21-100mm on the EVA1. Namely, would it be foolish to hang this 4.4lbs zoom off the front of the Panny without support?

I actually think this could be the perfect lens on that camera with a zacuto VCT pro shoulder mount and battery back balancing the whole thing when he camera and mount meet. Thats how I personally like to shoot. If you want to stay small light and handheld I would go with a canon 18-80 CN-E.

Well, I wouldn't. It's not necessarily just the raw weight. It's also the length and weight distribution and torque that's being generated and applied to the mount. While not what you'd consider a HEAVY lens, it's almost 9" long and that combined with the weight would put a lot of stress on the mount, especially if it's like the 17-120 and a lot(most) of the weight is in the front of the lens.

In the end the EVA1 is so small and light that without any rigging it will descaled the use of any cinema style zooms even the canon 18-80 will be a clumsy fit.
This comes from someone that refuses to do anything with a camera if its not perfectly on his shoulder or on a tripod. I know all you out there handholding, cradling, sticking monopods in your pants I don't know how or why you do it but I don't.

Well, at that point the camera is hanging off the lens. That's why the big stills lenses have collars to attach the lens to the tripod, and the camera is just along for the ride. I don't think cine lenses do that, but I'm sure a lens support attached to rails which are attached to a baseplate which is attached to EVA1 so all of it is basically one unit whose weight is supported by the rails system and not the camera or the mount, should work in those instances.

Yes it would.

The test for this on any lens is easy. Hold the lens by the lens mount using just your fingertips. If you can do this comfortably and stably for more than 30 seconds you don't need a lens support. Otherwise you do.

Doesn't look so bad to me. BTW, the EVA1 powers everything on this lens, including the servo zoom.

Anyone following me on Facebook? I've been posing lots of photos of EVA1 in action and on special visits. And today we announced the NY & LA EVA1 events with screening of the three EVA1 shorts, Q&As with the filmmakers and hands-on time with the cameras. September 11 in NYC and September 14 in LA. RSVP and additional info on Eventbrite.

I've not had a problem with play in any EF mounts I've used (Various Canon, ARRI Mini, Ursa Mini, and the EF side of a few Metabones adapters). So I'd be surprised to get image shifts from pulling focus on the EVA1. I *have* experienced that with MFT mounts, definitely. Drove me crazy. And was part of the reason I transitioned from MFT lens sets to EF sets.
Always surprising that people have such a different range of experience with these cameras...perhaps in this lies the weak link in using these prosumer cameras...although image quality is excellent, consistency is not...I have never experienced a single issue with images shifting on my M4/3 mount cameras...using a FF focus with Native and adapted lenses...including some very old manual lenses, some of which have rather stiff focus rings, and an adapter between the lens and the mount....perhaps the inconsistency lies in the manufacturing quality...I don't know what else could explain the varying range of results...I find the M4/3 mount, though not locking, very solid, especially as it's on a smaller camera body made of magnesium...both GH4 & 5 do not flex the front of the camera, therefor no movement in the mount at all....I use heavy Nikon AFS 2.8 ED zooms...the 17-35, 28-70 and 8-200, and only a lens support with the 200, though I'm probably just being over cautios, yet zero issue.

Absolutely. Cameras at this price will have more compromises. The more expensive the less compromises till you get to the very expensive no expenses spared very high end cameras.

Yes

So many of the EVA1 features are so good. Just a LITTLE disappointed it cannot record 4k/60p 10-bit internally like the GH5. I am well aware the GH5 is lacking many features of the EVA1, but a strong 4k/60p codec should NOT be one of those things :(

the GH5 does not capture 4K/60p in 10-bit internally.
