EVA1: Hands on with working EVA1 Updated for Day 2 shooting.

Sure, but how many big budget films use these lenses really? And no vintage lenses you can use unless using cinemodded Leicas or Contax. If Panasonic was serious about having their cameras being used on bigger budget productions and steal some market from Red and Arri, which I'm sure they are, they've should have designed the camera with interchangeable mount and sold the different mounts separately to keep the same cost. Then they might have stirred things up in the camera world. Yes the LT covers that base pretty good, but it's just a tad to heavy for gimbal use and drones and it hasn't really kicked off. Just yet. (I have one myself!). Only a few have been sold in my neck of the woods and that does not make me comfortable enough to use it on bigger productions, where I need to know there is back up. Eva-1 will not provide that with an EF mount. But maybe that's not what they really want in the end. Business as usual...

Are you talking about the EVA-1? It is not a "big budget production" camera.

That being said, I'm all for cameras having swappable/interchangeable mounts. It's one of the great things about my F55, I can go from PL to EF in literally less than ten seconds.

Yes talking about the EVA-1. And no it would not be the A camera on a bigger budget production but could be on a smaller film or it could easily be an extra camera to throw in for certain scenes. But mostly, in my case, if it had a mount that allowed me more flexibility. The mount is where the Sony cameras excel, except they made it rather cumbersome with their menu and color...

No other manufacture has color matching in a line up. It would be oh so good to have this in the Panasonic VariCam, EVA 1 and GH5.
Really? No other camera maker? Not sure how could this be so? Don't all manufactures strive for "color matching" across line up's...I'm a Panny fan but I'm not sure I'd agree from past experience that they are better at this than all the others.

I think it's difficult for companies to keep color consistent over the years as they improve in all aspects of the hardware and software.

Sensors improve, new gamma curves are created, processing may differ from one model to the next...all while they just simply continue to work on their overall color science.

I can tell you that straight out of the box, none of the Canons match perfectly. They change the color science quite a bit on each model update. So if you take the WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) preset on the C100 MKI versus the C200, pretty different looking.

So LOG color from low end Canon or Sony consumer cameras all the way up to their high end cine cameras will match up ?
I can't say with any certainty for any manufacturer - since I've not used low end to highest end in a matching situation. That's why Erik's statement caught my attention.

My thoughts are more hopeful that Panasonic will have a lineup that has color science that is really close. I like you haven't seen the EVA 1 yet and we are told that it will match the VariCam very well. My little sample shows the GH5 is not a perfect match but not that far off either. Panasonic has improved the color of the GH5 to my eye.

My point is I'm hopeful they will work to get the GH5 tweaked a little more to better match. Maybe it isn't possible. I'm no engineer but I think if it is it would be a impressive camera lineup based on color alone.

I can't understand why Panasonic wouldn't make this camera with an exchangeable mount.

The Red Raven is also a fixed EF mount, even though all their other cameras are PL/EF. It's simple market economics - the % of people who absolutely need PL is not high enough to justify raising the price point for every buyer. For productions using this as a B-Cam to the Varicams, it is probably because they need something smaller & lighter for drone/gimbal/car mounts etc, and in that case they will probably be looking for more compact lens solutions as well. EF mount has advantages over PL in this regard.

I don't use the Red Raven, so can't comment. It's fixed EF mount is one of the reasons. The EF mount per se is rather flimsy, when not a positive lock version. EVA-1 does not have a positive lock, which means whenever you will pull focus (on a gimbal?!), there is going to be image shift problems. Not good at all when the camera lends itself to be used on said thing. Go figure.

I can see the advantages of an EF mount, but only if the user of the camera has the possibility of changing it when needed. Panasonic, Blackmagic and other companies have easily proved this possible, so in the end I believe it's a hard cold business calculation about forcing the potential buyer into a certain box, not about making it cheaper for the user. Flexibility is key.

Either way seems reasonable enough to me, but it's certainly not unreasonable with tech these days to wonder if the IQ and color can match the Varicam. Varicam LT has plenty going for it beyond image quality, and plenty of ways to distinguish it beyond that.

More BTS footage on Panasonic Pro's FB. Looks like they're shooting some cool content in various settings, which I appreciate.

It isn't about "forcing the potential buyer into a certain box". What rubbish. It is about meeting a certain price point fro marketing reasons.

Cameras in THAT price range are gonna sell more with an EF mount. Period.

If you don't like it, vote with your wallet. It isn't going to change.

I don't believe that by making the camera with an exchangeable mount and keeping the same price range you would sell less cameras. Period. I vote with my common sense.

I'm all for user swappable mounts on cameras and lenses, that's one of the reasons I love my F55 and why I spent the rather large chunk of additional money having the eUMS system installed on my 17-120, but I believe Mitch already covered this and said that going with a swappable mount system would have made the camera heavier and more expensive. How much more, only Panasonic would know that, and I'm sure they probably weighed that option out.

There are buyers out there that would say that they would have gladly paid a few hundred dollars more to have that ability/option even if they never utilized it, but there are buyers out there who wouldn't pay one cent more than they have to, because they don't want that option and would never use it.

It's really not anti-swappable mount, it's anti-PL glass ... which is deemed too high priced for a $7,500 camera.

Now, if Canon could release more cheaper better lenses ...

I agree with icarus and mcgee but there is truth to what Marcel is saying. What would the compromise be by adding an interchangeable mount? Added weight to the EVA-1? Some sensor design compromise? Dramatic increase in cost? I think other manufacturers have shown that needn't be the case.

Anyway, I have no intent of using PL glass so I really don't care, but Marcel is saying that he sees it as a marketing decision to protect the higher end line. So do I. The difference is Marcel is mad about it, I'm not. The de-facto line is "it would increase cost to the EVA-1 for a feature we don't think most people would uses at this price point". How true is that? That's a speculative debate that no only the engineers and marketing department really know.

The only thing I would implore from Panasonic and others is the notion of how camera features are currently also designated by size/weight. I said it before, but I'd love if they offered an "EVA-1 Extreme" at a higher cost: in-built 5.8" 1920x1080 ultra-bright LCD. Interchangeable lens mount. 12g SDI. Faster CPU for 4K 60 10-bit 4:2:2. Carbon Fiber and other expensive materials for even lighter overall weight. Etc. MSRP: $9,995.

The fundamental assumption that certain features are too expensive for a $7345 is flawed, because it is based on the belief that the EVA-1 is appealing only if budget is limited. It ignores the fact that form factor and power options are important considerations for many operators today; and the value of a workflow where EVA-1 might be a B-camera on big productions, and for those users, the ability to attach matching PL glass could be quite nice.

PS - The EVA-1 is hot.
