EVA1: Hands on with working EVA1 Updated for Day 2 shooting.

Close enough to sell the LT if we need 120fps full sensor and small body instead of PL mount and 5000iso or is the LT still ahead in term of IQ? I remember some Luc Bara's quote here saying that the DR is way better than GH5 but inferior to Varicam. Did you notice that? Are they equally "filmic" or does 5.7k give a more videoish sharper look?

That would be a question you would need to answer for yourself after viewing and using.

Cut Noel some slack guys. He is giving us a lot of info but he cant be as candid as we all would like. Panasonic was gracious enough to give him a EVA1 to try out but the camera isnt a production model yet and we just wont get all the user info we want from Noel.

Seriously? It's like asking if the ride is as smooth on a motorcycle as it is in a sedan because you really need a two-wheeler to get through traffic.

Image quality is something that you need to judge for yourself. While Panasonic places the EVA1 in the space between the GH5 and the VariCamLT, we believe it is a lot closer to the LT than the GH5. Personally I can't see selling one camera in favor of the other unless you really find that the first just isn't appropriate for your needs. They are both great cameras but they are certainly different cameras, and the VariCam LT offers numerous features unavailable on the EVA1.

Pinched this quote from Erik's thread.

Thanks for the test Eric...IMO your test proves that the GH5 can comfortably work alongside the Varicam LT as a B/Crashcam which is good news for me, as the Varicam is definitely my dream camera...and of course, if the EVA is close to the VCLT in image, the GH5 would work well alongside the EVA as well...perhaps most telling in your test, is that you have to "look" for the differences in IQ between the two cams, and for any audience member (public) the difference will be unnoticeable!...the GH5 is indeed a little powerhouse!

Ok so I've been nattering on about colours and image matching EVA1 to Varicams, then the question of can I dump my Varicam for EVA1 was asked. If you look at Erik's tests you'll see the above to be relatively accurate when matching GH5 to Varicam and I personally respect Erik's opinion on the matter and give it a lot of weight. Now, the colour set up in the EVA1 is designed to match Varicam. It uses V-Log and V-Gammut. I think you can think of it safely in these terms. A Level = Varicam. B Level = EVA1. C Level = GH5. That's not to say the GH5 is a slouch. I think many have already proved it's capable.

Now Ive put them into some relative categorisation. Can you dump Level A for Level B? Sure you can, but now you're Level B. Most of my commentary is how well I've seen the EVA1 perform and I that think its a great little camera. Keep in mind as well that I shot the EVA1 to the 150mbps LongGop 422 codec and the LT to AvcIntra 422. At the upper end, have you seen the LT shoot RAW? Its beautiful. Simply stunning IMO. I havent shot the EVA1 to RAW, but in my mind I don't think there's a lot that could match the RAW from the Varicams, so am very interested to compare the two. I enjoyed how the EVA1 offered some unique features in shooting but at the end of the day its not the Varicam sensor. Its a fantastic sibling though and Im looking forward to shooting on it again soon. I liked having the LT and EVA1 at the same time. They're similar, but the size and other difference made me want both.

Thanks for the thoughtful way in which you discuss these cameras Noel...the forum is indeed lucky to have this kind of feedback!

Yes, thank you Noel. Your insight (and the manner in which you share it) is greatly appreciated. Your A-B-C categorization is helpful. and I'm tempering my expectations for the EVA1 now. I'm not terribly impressed with the GH5's image. In my opinion, it is overly sharpened and exhibits problematic skintones. Both evident in Erik Naso's test. Again, this is my opinion. So with EVA1 somehwere in between the GH5 and the Varicam's sensational image, I'm tempering my expectations for this new sensor's ability to deliver on the promise of Varicam colors and skintones until I see footage first hand.

Unfortunately the long timeline from the first mention of the AU-EVA 1 to when people will actually be able to try/buy one seems to inflate expectations to unreasonable levels. If you look at the Panasonic Cinema lineup with logic and a dose of pragmatism, of course the EVA 1 will not look nearly as good as the Varicam LT. It should look considerably better than the GH5, simply based upon it's price point and feature set/specs. Personally, I feel that the AU-EVA1 is going to make quite impressive images and will be the perfect solution to higher end productions who either cannot use the LT because of size/weight issues or it will also serve as the perfect B-camera/Gimbal/Crane/Overhead camera on LT or V35 shoots. Based upon Panasonic's track record, I expect the EVA 1 is going to look really, really impressive for the money but it's not going to look like a $25k camera. Nor should we expect it to. Temper those expectations people.

I agree. Unfortunately people want it all in a $2K camera and what we get these days is so good I understand why. Panasonic is in a very interesting position to have a line up that covers a lot of models and I hope as far as color goes they will improve on them matching. No other manufacture has color matching in a line up. It would be oh so good to have this in the Panasonic VariCam, EVA 1 and GH5. Features are one that separates the cameras and I don't feel thats a problem at all.

If you are shooting the Varicam LT with PL mount lenses, the EVA-1 does not seem like the ideal b-cam. I can't understand why Panasonic wouldn't make this camera with an exchangeable mount.

There are many lenses that have interchangeable lens mounts or that are available in both EF- and PL-mount.

Canon CN-E primes (the primes can be modified to have a PL-mount) and zooms
Zeiss CP2, CP3, LWZ2 and LWZ3.
Rokinon Xeen
SLR Magic APO Hyperprime
Angenieux EZ-zooms
Sigma Cine lenses
Tokina Cinema Vista series
Schneider Xenon and Cine-Xenar III
and more.

Sure, but how many big budget films use these lenses really? And no vintage lenses you can use unless using cinemodded Leicas or Contax. If Panasonic was serious about having their cameras being used on bigger budget productions and steal some market from Red and Arri, which I'm sure they are, they've should have designed the camera with interchangeable mount and sold the different mounts separately to keep the same cost. Then they might have stirred things up in the camera world. Yes the LT covers that base pretty good, but it's just a tad to heavy for gimbal use and drones and it hasn't really kicked off. Just yet. (I have one myself!). Only a few have been sold in my neck of the woods and that does not make me comfortable enough to use it on bigger productions, where I need to know there is back up. Eva-1 will not provide that with an EF mount. But maybe that's not what they really want in the end. Business as usual...
