EVA1: Hands on with working EVA1 Updated for Day 2 shooting.

I know you have a lot of experience with the Varicam Noel.

Obviously this camera isn't in the same price range as one, but what can you say about it in regards to that?

Matt, actually this point is very important to me. But honestly at this point, Im not sure. Just don't have all the info yet. Today Ill be heading out for some daylight exteriors, think b roll shots then later a few shots of people under lighting. This camera is still a very early iteration. Early demo LT changed quite a bit up til release for example - not body / layout etc, more in image fine tune.

This is awesome to hear, Noel. Will any of your shots be featured in Panasonic's future footage release? Excited to see this thing in action!

Re: image quality, what is it in your eyes that specifically makes it so impressive? And, is there anything you see at all in the midst of being impressed that has you unsure or reserved?

Short answer is no. Everything Ive shot is for my purposes only. Im extremely impressed so far.

Thanks for sharing Noel, your info is gold. Happy to hear about roll-off...coming from the BMCC that's one of my bigger concerns.

Thanks for the update, Noel! I wanted to ask your impression of skintones. I love how they are rendered by the Varicam LT. Don't know if you've shot with any people in the frame, but if so, does the EVA1 have that same Varicam mojo when it comes to skin?

Thanks for those notes, Noel. What are your thoughts on image quality when comparing ISO 2000 between the two base ISOs? I'm sure it's pretty clean from ISO 800, but I bet it's more clean from ISO 2500.

What are your least 3 favorite things about the camera? (not trying to be negative, just trying to do homework). Sounds like the LCD is one of them, and would come recommended with a 3rd party option here.... what else?

Thanks for the great info! Excited for this camera.

Good question, filmguy. There are always at least a few things I don't like about every camera I've ever owned or used...
Would love to see footage / frame grabs of any thing you care / can share Noel.

Noel, thanks for your impressions about the EVA-1. Much appreciated...

How do you find the form factor when working with it, in both naked form and with the recorder on top?

Is the side handle well positioned, is it useful beyond a grab point? How is the build quality of the armature on the top of the camera, does it feel like the LCD and connecting bits will last the long haul in the battle field.

Heard there is a flip out hood, sound good as a help in brightly lit areas. Can you tell if the LCD had divits in the side to except a possible future EVF loupe/hood a la EX3? Are the focus tools reasonably good in comparison to generally accepted tools of the past with peaking you have used on cameras of the past and so on?

The base of the camera. Do the points for attachment look solid, as in they won't easily get ripped out. Is the hole pattern on the bottom well thought out with both 1/4-20s and 3/8-16 threaded holes? What material is the base of the camera made of and is the flat portion sufficiently large enough for a baseplate with a long lens and other gak both fore and aft?

There were terms for me using the camera, one being obviously not sharing anything at this stage.

To answer filmguy's question, well there's the ergonomics of the camera - if you're someone who loves a shoulder mount camera then this will obviously need to be built up to that. On the LCD, it kind of is what it is. As I mentioned its not HDR / High Bright so like any LCD you've used in the past with a reflective screen, expect the same issues I guess.

To me personally, and it's probably things you can see for yourself anyway if you get near Mitch or another Pana person with the camera: I wasn't a huge fan of the mount for the LCD, however I expect I will mount it on the rear of the handle and it should be fine. Also, Im not a fan of the shinny black buttons. I don't think many would care but I prefer a soft feel button. At first I questioned the position of the HDMI ou, but after using the camera it made more sense. Thought the placement of the headphone jack should be toward the bottom of the camera as well.

Noel, thanks for your impressions about the EVA-1. Much appreciated...

I used a C300 Mark 1 a lot in the past so Im good with it. Obviously external screen / recorder makes it a little ungainly. I definitely want an EVF on mine and will probably use add a small HD something to it as well.

The side handle is very useful, I was using it for all menu functions, record stop start, iris and open iris focus assist. When you're not in menu mode press the stop / exit button and it does 2 x expand for focus assist as well.

On the longevity of those components. No issue with any component, though the plastic tighteners on the version I had did worry me a little.

Heard there is a flip out hood, sound good as a help in brightly lit areas. Can you tell if the LCD had divits in the side to except a possible future EVF loupe/hood a la EX3? Yes, the flip out hood is removable, leaving behind mount points a third party loupe could be made for. If you're going to use it this way, which I may depending on what products come out - the built in focus tools replicate the LT and the expand looks the same as the one on the DVX200, so enough to get critical focus for sure.

I attached a wooden camera baseplate and gave it a good tighten, I didn't feel at anytime it may weaken. It had both 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 threaded hole. As to materials, thats a question for Mitch. Is the flat portion sufficiently large enough? That would all depend on how you set it up, but for my purposes it would work in any situation. I used the Wooden Camera baseplate I use on my Varicam LT with it, and will most likely just add another to the kit for this camera (after I've checked heights etc).

Sorry mate, I was working in base ISO's only. However would agree with your assumption. Applying negative gain from 2500 would be clean, its certainly the case when you gain down from 5000 base on Varicams.

Sure did Zak. One of the key things for me, they were very very close. Wish I could share those two shots, but am not able to.

Close enough to sell the LT if we need 120fps full sensor and small body instead of PL mount and 5000iso or is the LT still ahead in term of IQ? I remember some Luc Bara's quote here saying that the DR is way better than GH5 but inferior to Varicam. Did you notice that? Are they equally "filmic" or does 5.7k give a more videoish sharper look?
