After shooting on Blackmagics and DSLR, I made the plunge and got a C100. I used it today on a paid job (clinic promo video) after only getting it yesterday.
From what I quickly learned the night before I shot using the WDR profile. Set my frame rate to 25PsF. Kept my ISO at 850 or above. My thoughts after using it were that is was hard to white balance consistently and hard to expose on the rear screen.
1) My first question, is the white balance a bit finicky with this camera? I did a black balance before shooting. Daylight stuff looked good but occasionally would have an orange cast, despite the lighting not changing from a previous shot. The clinic had some old strip lights and these things made the entire image very green and nasty. Out of curiosity I pulled out my 60D and could white balance for these lights much better, still not amazing due to the lights but nowhere near as bad as the C100. I tried auto white balance which gave me different values despite not moving the camera or changing the lighting, this was a well lit scene. Also tried manually setting the Kelvin and using a grey card.
It kind of reminds me of how my old AF100 used to handle badly under certain lighting.
2) I actually didn't realise until I got back that the C100 does not shoot actual 25p. I've dropped the footage on a 25p timeline and told Premiere to ignore the different footage spec. When played back it looks like 25p to me. Is this conforming it to progressive scan or do I need to do that by using 'interpret footage' in Premiere? What is the general consensus on 25PsF, does it really matter or once conformed is it no different to 25P?
3) I'm very used to using false colour on a DP4 (now sold to fund the C100) to expose. Get skin tones to come up as orange and I'm good to go. I have used zebras in the past so perhaps I just need to practice a bit more with those. I find the highlight roll-off to be very nice. Some shots which looked great on the rear LCD ended up being slightly over exposed when viewed back.
4) Is WDR the way to go for corporate work? I'm going to practice with C-Log for more creative projects. I loved BMDFilm from the Blackmagic cameras.
These are my main questions. I found the camera really ergonomic and the image is really nice considering it's only 8bit 4:2:0 24mbit. I plan on picking up a second hand Ninja soon. Obviously a first shoot with a camera will never be your best and I have a lot to re-learn after shooting so much on the BMCC and BMPCC.
A few quick tests have proved that FilmConvert using the C100 WDR does a really nice job on the footage. I'll post some screengrabs.
