Grindhouse.....split

Good idea the split. Planet Terror is a far more superior grindhouse flick than Death proof. Tarantino even seen a grindhouse movie? The dialogue was terrible and pretentious you had to wait for 2 years before anything happened. Planet terror was a true grindhouse movie.

I haven't seen Planet Terror yet, but I sort of dug Death Proof. There were some babes, some car chases, some laughs (I can still hear you!), but at the end... it just seemed to be missing something. I really can't explain it any better.

As for the reason the two movies were put together in the first place, too many here are too young to remember drive ins and double features. That was part of the nostalgia that Tarantino was trying to bring back.

I'm sure Tarantino has seen a grindhouse movie, they are terrible films for the most part. Case in point!

Well Death Proof wasn't terrible enough. Although that's not an accurate description. Grind House movies are predominantly exploitation movies, they don't HAVE to be terrible.

they don't HAVE to be terrible.

True it's just the nature of the beast. Not all are that bad, but they all have their moments. RR movie was more of a twist on a grindhouse theme than an actual grindhouse, which isn't a bad thing It was alot of fun. I think Tarantino had a better grasp of the genre, which isn't neccesarily a bad thing either, but it didn't sit well with most people who saw it that didn't know what the hell a grindhouse film was really supposed to be.
The whole Grindhouse thing just didn't catch on with the audience at large. It probably should have been done on a much smaller budget as the investors lost their @sses on this one.

Being split up for theatrical release in Australia (you guys will probably have it on dvd by that time).

Anyway I say the flicks, really liked the first half of deathproof, particularly the lap dance girls character, just seemed cool. The second half shoulda went in some kind of different direction but hey, go the Aussie chick! Apparently she was Uma Thurman's stunt double in kill bill.

Bahaha.

Planet Terror seemed nothing like a Grinhouse Film and more 80's horror than anything.

I effin loved em both.

Much better than a majority of the cookie cutter crap we usually see.

Didn't you pay attention during the film? That Kiwi girl is gonna kick your ass!

On opening weekend, tThe movies it competed with were

Blades of Glory
Meet the Robinsons

Are We Done Yet?
The Reaping
300
Wild Hogs
Shooter
TMNT
Firehouse Dog

I'd see Grindhouse any day over any of these choices; only 300 reigns in as an alternate. Most of these are silly, harmless comedies.

Sigh, White Bread America

Woah, it was R rated? When I watched it I thought it was PG13/14A, maybe just in Canada. It is pretty tame to be honest.

I like watching these 'apocalyptic religious good vs. evil' movies, even though modern ones tend to all suck. Anyways, this one is pretty bad and stupid. I called the ending even before I saw the movie, it is pretty predictable. Modern films like this just don't have the 'balls' that Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist or The Omen had in their time.

I think this is also one of the films that helped WB decide not to have female main characters anymore. :lipsrseal

Here is a review from Rotten Tomatoes:

'If you turn away from God and do not repent, God will kill you. You will die. The end.'

I have The Reaping sitting right beside me. Will have to watch it at 'work' in the next few hours and rate it on the crap-o-meter.
