Grindhouse.....split

Being split up for theatrical release in Australia...

It was split up in a bunch of places because foreigners aren't used to the idea of a double feature. IMDB reports that some people left after the first flick ended...and this was in the USA, where it was assumed people understood what a double feature was.

They figured the reason for that was because most of the audience was too young to remember the experience of drive-ins and double features...which means they made a project primarily aimed at the 18-25 demographic even though that particular demographic would be too young to appreciate the genre and 'homage.' Makes sense...

From what I have read, after all the cash they spent marketing it, they were looking for the reason why people weren't going to see the thing, and blamed it on the running time. They figured people didn't want to sit there for three hours. Weinstein has said he wants to re-release them as separate films.

So, they split the two films up...and people still didn't go.

It bogles me.

I did not expect a $100,000,000 success, but expected $60 - $70 Mil domestic.

Another film that flopped was The 13th Warrior; don't get it.

On topic

In a weird way, I'm kind of content knowing this type of filmmaking isn't everyones bag of tea

I finally got the Tarantino movie (Death Proof) and absolutely LOVED it. I went in with somewhat low expectations considering that I wasn't a big Kill Bill fan. This movie wildly exceeded my expectations. He was on top of his game as far as dialogue goes. I also loved the characters he created.

I hadn't originally planned on getting Planet Terror, but after how pleased I was with Death Proof I ordered it. Amazon shipped it out today and I'll have it Wednesday.

Just realized tomorrow was the day. Can't wait to see it!

Death Proof was surprisingly good...and even more surprising - my wife liked it too.

Just picked up PLANET TERROR

Awesome 10 Minute Film School; as always, inspiring and practical

At the end of the 10 Minute Film School ? RR states to look for additonal goodies on the upcoming GRINDHOUSE DVD that has both films (and new features)

Bastards ! They did it again.

Man, that is so cool! I'm going to go pick up Planet Terror tonight...

Probably won't get the Grindhouse DVD when it comes out, since I really didn't like Death Proof too much.

I knew it, thats why I haven't bought either one yet. Course I will probably wait till they release in HD.

Curiously

What did you not like about it ?

Slow... didn't feel it really went anywhere...

Dialog was GREAT, but it was just that, just dialog... I don't know, it just didn't do anything for me...

PT was just a wild ride, start to finish, and I love the "cliche" dialog in it as well.

At the end of Death Proof, I was left wanting something more. I don't quite know what it was missing, but it was. Still a killer movie though.

That isn't hard to do, it wasn't like it was smart or witty, RR probably just took a romantic movie script he wrote a couple years ago and plugged in some zombies and Tarantino's balls falling off.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, RR didn't seem to get the concept of a grindhouse film. With the splitting up of the two films in foreign markets, I feel saddened that neither film was about the experience, just a gimmick.
