Greenpeace commercial shot on 5dmkII in India

Phillip, please tell me if you prefer the image quality of the 5d over the 7d. This looks amazing with excellent dynamic range.

Since the GH1 came out I've watching Philip's movies on his blog and it's noticeable that the 5DMII seems to have a pretty large edge in terms of colour and dynamic range, judging from the Sofia's people versus Dublin, but then I am not sure if they're all that comparable - is Sofia's 5D footage graded? It seems a lot warmer. The Dublin footage is almost as green as Ireland itself!

I also wondering if the vari-ND filter on the Greenpeace footage softened the image enough to help with aliasing?

Looks great, Philip, but I would like to see more detail in peoples faces. It seems alot of it just goes to black in their faces. Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy your work.

....I also find it amusing when I hear a man in his twentys say the climate has changed in his lifetime. How is this significant in a climate system that is billions of years old? Just saying.

Very significant, which is why i want the USA to stop causing it ;) Just sayin

By far the best I've seen out of any DSLR. Beautiful!
Could you please talk a little about the way you achieved this look? Both in-camera and post.

It looks dark through a lot of it, but in a very pleasant way. Or is that just my monitor?

Fantastic job!

I also felt there was very little aliasing. Was it from the use of this filter or something else? Perhaps a combination of several factors both in-camera and post.

I would agree after seeing this, but isn't the amount of active lines equal? And only physically more spread out on the 5D?

Maybe this apparent dynamic range, detail, color, etc, are all a result of multiple factors well balanced by lots of know how and meticulous care.

I would love to hear a little of what you did to get such a great image Phillip.

Again, fantastic job. I loved everything about it.

i prefer the image from the 5d over the 7d any day BUT i prefer the 7d frame rates. Although the 30p here isn't too shabby is it!?

I use a monopod, zacuto tactical shooter, z finder 1, great lenses, patience, fader and vari nds.

Everyone was ecstatic with the end product

You can read about the grade here: http://www.theronin.co.uk/blog/2009/09/05/colourist-the-ronin/

I thought the edit was stunning. Much more Tony Scott than my style but loved it. Someone new can do amazing things with your work.

The fact it has changed in his lifetime is bloody scary. These things should not happen so fast!

I am having a hard time finding the discussion about the post workflow in that site. Has anyone found it?

patience, fader

Where can I read more about these. :)

What is a fader Phillip? Is that also something that might have helped with aliasing? I would love to hear what you might have done to diminish it in-camera.

Fantastic screen grabs! Some of those are stunning Phillip.

I hadn't thought about the lack of built in NDs until you posted about the Vario and Fader NDs! I have to thank you for that. It would have been a nasty oversight in my budgeting. It seems one of these is a must buy for those of us that complained about the limited ND settings on an HVX and dreamed about having three like in the HXP170 or HMC150. Unfortunately, a matte box is out of my personal-use range but this may be the solution!

_ What is the difference between the Vario and the Fader?
_ And can they replace a Polarizer as well?
_ Do they soften the image juuust a tad, possibly helping with aliasing?

I imagine you might be slammed with work, so perhaps someone else can help me understand the details about them. Especially the Fader ND since it is quite affordable, starts at one 1 light loss instead of 2, and doesn't vignette with a 24mm in full frame cameras.

Yeah, right. let´s just blame the USA for EVERYTHING.

You want to do sth against global warming, earth polution and global water shortage?

Become VEGAN. As simple as that. Don´t blame anyone but yourself.

...

The Video rocked! Great images, sounds and cuts. 5D at its best.

I bought the fader ND from Hong Kong after seeing the initial reports on Philip's blog versus the Singh Ray one. I recommend it, gives you great control over exposure without needing to resort to frame rate adjustments. 30p isn't quite as nice as 24p but 1/120 shutter is a LOT worse than using 1/30 or 1/40 for anything but super fast action. And of course, with the vari ND you get to keep the DOF nice and shallow...which is one of the reasons I prefer the 5D over the 7D... that, and getting the most out of my Zeiss lenses.

As for Global Warming, I am interested in the politics of it and dislike some of the denier's views but don't think this is the right place to start an argument about it!! I mean, everyone has their vested interests to keep polluting and denying, but anyone with eyes can see how fast we're having an effect on stuff.
