FEATURE: Green

A friend of mine--Nick Gregorio--shot, produced, and edited a feature film called Green last year.

I only helped out on the post side by creating the animated intro credits, and most recently, by cutting together the "official trailer." Check it out below

The movie was shot on RED and is about to be self-released on DVD. You can check it out here:

Looks like a cable show. In fact if HBO wanted to make a show like Showtime's "Weeds" and wanted to make it on a low budget this would be the show. I mean even down to the shot selection and music. That doesn't make it bad really, but I guess it depends on what your friend is going for. The main actors are good though.

There's some serious CC work that needs to be done on some of the shots (not a ton, nothing some basic Photoshop style "brightness/contrast" or adding some black couldn't solve). That would possibly do the trick. My other problem is there doesn't seem to be any real conflict save the dude gets sucked back into drugs. I mean how does it effect him? Is there some danger? If so it's only implied. A good title could be "The Glamorous Like of a Reluctant Drug Dealer."

Is this comedy? I guess some people will get it. Is it action? None is shown. Is it drama? I guess there is some. But why should I root for the guy. Sitting around smoking and selling pot all day. Heck I could go back to my old neighborhood and see that. Why should I watch this film? And if this is another film where someone's going make their "big score" who are they stealing from and what will stand in their way? And what part does the ex-girlfriend play (tell me she doesn't steal all the money at the end).

The trailer needs to sell me. Then again, the film may just not be for me, but it doesn't really look interesting. Also, this film could've been shoot on anything from my HG10 to an HCM150. I see some good colors, but the "shot on Red" doesn't really do anything for the film itself. Everyone should consider if they need to shoot on Red or not. Save the money and get better locations and other things that may be needed.

the film looks really fun and actors are great. but I agree with nathyn in that there seems to be huge color grade problems all over the place inconsistencies in CC. This is some of the first footage from Red I've seen that looks like a DSLR or perhaps DVX100B for some reason. Is this a non MX upgraded Red?

I was thinking the same. On the plus side, the audio sounded pretty good.

Poor man's Weeds.

Have you tried contacting editors at High Times, sending them a DVD to review? There's a whole sub-culture that can help get the word out.

I don't have much to do with the film. I just cut the trailer and did the graphics for the opening titles, which you can check out here:

I agree about the red footage. He color corrected the thing in FCP, which seemed like a dumb workflow decision to me. He also used the camera without much practice or knowledge beforehand, which proves that it's not the tools, but how you use them. The whole thing was shot for $8,000...so it lacks polish throughout.

What did you do the motion graphics in? Motion or After Effects? And he may have been using a version of FCP before color. The problems I saw looked like they possibly could've been fixed in Color or maybe FCP itself.

Your titles look very cool ikander.

Agree that the footage looks more like television than feature film but if the story plays (it seems like a comedy) then it's not that big an issue.

The motion graphics are more interesting than the trailer in many aspects. Who did the music on this BTW. It works real well. I'm assuming these are the opening credits, then they'll fade into the first scene.

LOL. It just looks professional. And seems to work for the film. In fact it adds to the film. I've watched it a few times.
