Great Zacuto Shootout part 2-comments, surprises?

On a side note, I didn't see in either episode, or the other thread a mention of what picture style they used for the Canons. Variations in picture style make huge differences on the Canons in color, sharpness and contrast. From the images in episode 2, I'd guess they were using the neutral picture style with contrast, sharpness and saturation turned down. Many of the sharpness and sensitivity clips showed the Canons to display relatively little color, which is surprising as that seems to be the Canons forte.

I agree c3hammer. I like the cannons overall look for narrative productions, but as gentleman from zacuto said, all these cams can deliver great images in the wright hands. Very imformative though.

on a side note, I turn sharpness almost all the way down in my 5d as I love the filmic qualities of this cam vrs. the other sharper cams. they all have trade offs.
 
if you add sharpness in post then youre also sharpening codec artifacts and this doesnt look nice, so its better to add sharpness in cam cause if everything is soft then everything gets sharpened along with codec artifacts.
 
Agreed...don't turn sharpness ALL the way down unless doing green screen work...in which case the sharpness artifacts will cause problems
 
The tests seem to confirm what what I've heard from a lot of people and what I've observed in my own footage.

The DSLRs have great sensors that can be mounted with some great lenses. Unfortunately their inability to properly downsample the image combined with a crappy codec leads to results that I'm a bit nervous to project on a big screen. Every time I've seen DSLR footage blown up, there's something that feels slightly odd about it to me. It's like I'm looking at an amazing image that has been somehow "digitized" in a weird way. I think when looking at this footage on smaller screens or when scaled down to 720p, the aliasing and compression issues don't really show up.

In the end, I'm just glad to see how well the DSLRs stacked up in most other respects. They're amazing little cameras with a price and level of portability that can't be beat. With so much stuff moving to online streaming anyway (H26 can't be escaped), I know there are tons of professional uses I'll have for my DSLR and it's perfect for personal/no-budget stuff. I just think I'll try to see about renting a bigger camera if I'm hoping to project something.
