Great Zacuto Shootout 2011

The test was the Single Chip Camera Evaluation for large-sensor cameras used for cinema use. Canon Video and JVC don't have any of those, so none of their products were included.

they were beings sponsored by the camera makers
As far as I understand they were most definitely not being sponsored by the camera makers. They asked the manufacturers to supply cameras and a professional to administer the camera to make sure it was being used best, but they didn't take any sponsorship. Sometimes (like with Red) they wouldn't supply a camera, so the group sourced one separately.

Ah, fail... they changed the music. Should have kept the western style! Now it's like, 80's cyberspace or something. lol.

Was surprised at how the 7D came out better than the 5DII, If I remember both in highlight and shadow but neither stood up to the big boys.

Arri Alexa . . . . I wanna, I wanna . . . *sigh* Perhaps if I sold the house and lived in a tent?

In 10 years, we'll have an Arri Alexa for under $2,000 in the form factor of a DSLR. And Red will be campaigning for the first 4D camera.

In the scene with the blondes looking very clean, notice the difference in moire pattern between Canon and D7000. Dithering/soft mask would make the Canon footage usable; but with the Nikon you'd want to re-paint the whole dress.

TEN years? Boy, you need to keep up!

I was really hit by the resolution differences. Red One MX and Weisscam you could see and feel the resolution differences even when downrezzed to 1080p (I'm pretty sure this was at 1080). It also seemed to me that the DSLR cams just didn't match the resolution of F35, F3, AF100, Alexa. This is in part due to the nature of the codecs.

As a current AF100 user, I'm super impressed with it's performance here. For under $5000, I really didn't see anything that did quite as well price-per-dollar. F3 was nearly as bad in the highlight test, and the resolution and low light of the AF100 seemed to me much better than the DSLR contenders and near the the top enders. These results just tell me to be careful to not over-expose the AF100 as it has weakness to over exposure. But in most circumstances, I'll work around it without issue and have an amazingly great camera for low light.

RED MX impressed me alot. I've been super impressed with Alexa lately and have loved everything I've seen with it. But with the RED MX in these tests I could feel the superior resolution. I think I still prefer Alexa's image quality, but resolution does matter even when downrezzing.

IMO they should give technical specs , ISO , f stop and in canon DSLR's amount of contrast cause i find it weird that 7d has more in highlights than 5d, i wondering if they had them on contrast -4 cause it blows out highlights faster on regular contrast setting in the middle.
They did this for people who have no idea about cams or what, i would like to see some specs not only pictures cause there always be doubt when they dont give any technical info.

The fact that Red refused to supply an Epic, first claiming it wasn't ready and then releasing it a week later to other parties, plus their silly comment at NAB that their cameras are for making films not tests, kinda says it all.

Sure looks like fear masquerading as arrogance.

Given how hard Steve Weiss tried (he very pointedly underlines this) and the credibilty of the huge team of independent testers it certainly appears that RED was afraid of the the Arri Alexa. It appears too that they made the calculation that they had everything to lose and nothing to gain by participating.

Wanna bet that that they have already got an Alexa in house, have already done the equivalent tests and know the outcome?

My guess is higher resolution and better DR, but only if you turn on HDRx, not natively.

They tested only cameras from the professional lines. GH2 is considered a consumer line.

Too bad, it would have been nice to see how it compared. I suspect it may have had a surprise showing in some aspect, kinda like the 7D did

So what was the Nikon D7000 doing in the test? It is certainly not a professional camera

I think that they're even more worried about the Sony F3. I spoke to someone who was able to test the F3 with the S-Log upgrade, & they thought the DR was very close to that of the Alexa, maybe less than 1 stop difference.
