Great Zacuto Shootout 2011

Worked for me, and looked good. But, man, a lot of filler bites! The F3 and F35 were the stars (along with RED and Alexa).

The Sony's didn't handle the highlights well. And anyone notice how the AF100 was fairly disappointing overall? Surprising that the 7D outperformed the 5Dmk2 and 1dmk4 in the highlights as well. Also, the D7000 had a strong showing.

Great stuff.

As for DSLRs, D7000 looked really good in underexposed details and 7D looked really good in overexposed details. What I really liked about this episode was learning the middle point of each camera's dynamic range.

Why didn't they include the GH2? It's a direct competitor to the 5D & 7D, it has very similar features of the AF100.

I thought the F3 was sensational in low light but a little disappointing in highlights, but then they were working at ISO320 which is sub-optimal for F3 (800 native) and AF (400 native). Personally I thought the AF outperformed the canon DSLRs in low light and aside from the colour shift issues seemed similar in the lowlight (despite having technically less DR). The 7d seemed calibrated towards the highlights. Bit odd...

It's a shame they couldn't have run this test using the technicolor profile on the Canons, but I'm pretty stoked about how well the 7D performed. I'd say from this test alone that the highlight difference between the 5D/1D and the 7D is much more significant and noticeable that the low light difference. Problem for me, and for many of us, is that low budget productions tend to have less light available, so low light performance is truly where it's at.

I assume the GH2 wasn't included because this was not a DSLR roundup test like last year. This was a scientific \ stress test of cameras that are considered for "professional use". No knock against the GH2, it's a great video DSLR, but I don't think it quite fits that mold (generally speaking, of course). Also, the hardware decisions were left to Robert Primes, not Zacuto.

They tested only cameras from the professional lines. GH2 is considered a consumer line.

Too bad, it would have been nice to see how it compared. I suspect it may have had a surprise showing in some aspect, kinda like the 7D did

Shouldn't it be similar to the AF100? I don't know, haven't read comparisons between the GH2 and AF100.

like others, i would have loved to see the gh2 and maybe even a hacked gh1 in there, also technicolor on the canons, but oh well.

That definitely is a shame, specially when the GH2 outperforms the Canons in certain areas.

Too bad there weren't any cameras from Canon's professional video line either.

I think the reason they didnt add any of canons pro line of cameras is the sensor size. They all had to be large size sensors in the cameras and if i remember all of the canon pro line have 1/3rd sensors. It would also have been surprised to see them using a gh1 that was hacked because they were beings sponsored by the camera makers and i dont think that they take kindly to hacks on their cameras.
