Great newspaper photos

Jochen Rindt was a German-Austrian race car driver, who won the Formula 1 championship in 1970.

Posthumously.

Here in 1969.

I see - he won 5 out of 10 races in the series before he was killed, earning enough points that no one was able to overtake his lead.

I seem to recall a documentary about James Hunt and Senna that showed a lot of footage from the 60's and 70's including at a race (may have been F1,2 or 3) where a chap in a nylon anorak was fueling a car from a can via a funnel stuck in the filler cap. Whilst smoking a cigarette!! I think for one of the decades the number of drivers dying in a race per year was at least 1 out of 20 drivers.

The engine power went up during that time frame and the engineers response was to install a large back wing in order to create a greater down force at top speeds. But Rindt and many others ended up taking the wing off since it also slowed the car down. Whether that was the cause of Rindt's crash is not known.

I assume people have seen a back wing like in the second photo but just for reference ---

The cause of the uncontrollable sobbing wasn't that bad - Brazil just won the 1958 World Cup. Didi (far left) was named the best player, Pele the best young player.

I’ve covered NASCAR since the 90’s. Guys with cigarettes in their mouths while working on running race cars was SOP.

Yes. That was the first thing that popped into my mind when JAMedia brought up the doc he saw.

Sorta in the same vein, I saw a good doc several months ago, The 24 Hour War. It’s more or less the real “Ford vs Ferrari”.

My friend Pammy always had a smile that would bounce right back at you. I'll have to see if her mom has a photo I can share. Some people just got it. :)

Kinski was pretty young in the 1960's since she isn't even 60.

At least, not for another month.

haha DLD. Yeah she's one or two years (for real) younger than me in real life. The local station would only play her movies around after 2 or 3 am and it was always in French. That was before she became famous. I, (if I may sound stupid), thought she was German back then. From that area anyways. But yeah. :)
