Great newspaper photos

[ahalpert]

I regularly download newspaper photos that have terrific compositions. Photojournalists capture subjects in uncontrolled natural environments that are generally more complex and surprising than what humans can devise.

It's really difficult to bring photographic order to that chaos, but when cameramen pull it off, it's really something special.

I thought I'd start a running thread with some of the shots I save. Feel free to contribute if you see a beautiful photo in the newspaper.

When I was a kid, I used to cut out photos from the old Soviet Sport newspaper. As we were leaving, I left portions to a friend and a cousin.

The greatest goalkeeper I have ever seen, Vladimir Astapovsky, from CSKA Moscow, the MVP of the Soviet League, 1976.

The funny thing was that Flyers teammates said that Schultz was really scared of this. He thought he might have killed van Boxmeer.

PS. But I did watch a bunch of Behn Wilson's fights now. Those were really scary.

That is a fantastic photograph of a POTUS (regardless of politics) I hope, as it is a news photo, it is "as taken" and not one that is edited.

Wow I missed this when Liam posted it. I searched for it with google lens - it was taken by the great Doug Mills of the NYT, one of the best in the business.

The NYT and other papers have editorial guidelines that prevent them from compositing photos. I think all they can do are contrast and color adjustments.

This one's not so much a beautiful composition as a striking and bizarre iconography:
