Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
Called Casey (Exfilms) and said "Hey! Im shooting a small Zombie scene!  My brother and nephew are in it." and he said "Cool!" and showed up 12 hours later.  No script just some boards to work off of.

Dumped a bunch of blood on my nephew and my brothers windshield, had a nice laceration on my nephews neck and it was HOT.  Good times.

The lighting conditions were brutal with no clouds. Just plain ole hot, miserable heat.

Here are some grabs from todays small shoot.  Shot 4:3, Default Scene File 6.  Played with them in VEGAS for about 5 seconds, threw on a NON-STANDARD MATTE (Which means these mattes are not 16:9, 2:35 nor 1:85.  They were merely thrown on to frame using a media generator) and posted them here.

It's the first in what will hopefully be multiple episodes of a viral outbreak and, yes, the undead.  These grabs are not anything to represent a final product but just sharing the days shoot.

That being said?  Feel free to comment and I'll keep everyone posted of the Post work (scoring, sound fx, color correction) as well as NEXT SUNDAYS shoot for Day 2.

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

Thanks disjecta. It's the beginning of a Rack Focus (moving into the mangled person in the backseat) A Rack Focus without a Follow Focus! :D

That's Casey's (ExF) work as I just got out of the front seat and at this point was sweating and dying. Next time we are getting a truck and not some small ass Mazda.

Love the gradient filter you use in the first one...that's so zombie-filmish! Can't wait to see more!

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

Good eye Phil! You know we had to have that 'Zombie' look. We kept saying "...like in Day of the Dead..." or "...remember that one shot in Dawn?" :D

Great grabs John.
Great exposure. It's nice to see someone deal with this camera's latitude.

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

Thanks nsfilms! We have a few shots where we purposely blew it out (hopefully the reason will be obvious in terms of compostion) but for the most part we like what we are getting.

Next week we'll post some more (Another Day of shooting is on).

We really want to this the right way.  (Meaning, extra day of shooting, color correction, score, sound fx).  Our goals are to put together a high value, entertaining, episodic web-based dead film that is submitted in short 2 minute to 10 minute episodes.

This started as an excuse to just go "shoot" (hence no script) as I have been working my arse off in my real job.  I just wanted to shoot old school style like when I had a Super 8 and used my brother to play INDY.  As the day progessed and the shots came together (we have some nice dolly and crane shots) we realized how cool it would be to do something like this in a 'non-commital' non-120 page feature kind of way but in episodic 'tales'.

We are already in plans to get a real actor and cast and some other 'pros' to do make-up fx but that is down the road.  Right now, it's teaser central and learning (quicky) what wil and will not work in terms of horror and suspense.  We want to keep it real and plausible and based in reality and take it seriously.

Good to hear your working on a "fun" project. Sounds like a great idea. Keep us posted.

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

good stuffs! I particularily like the first grab..something about the colors and contrast really draws me in. composition in all of them is great. Keep dem grabbas comin!

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

Nice, John, very nice! I almost expect to see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar walking by with a bell!

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

Hey John, nice grabs!

the second one is a little more problematic IMHO, besides being not very interestingly composed, it's too poluted. Besides, the lighting don't match and we can see some stuff blowing out (ok, now I see it is intentional... let's wait and see, I have faith in you!). Man, you should have a makeup artist to take care of that overexposed nose! For the rack focus, how the hell did you do that? were you using some diffeent lenses? Were you behind the car in Z99 (I tested the cam a little bit and tought even the shallowest DOF I can get is too deep - loving the cam though...) or were you cose to the talent?

Nice shooting

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

Nice stuff john - my interests are sparked for sure. How long are you going to keep us hangin' on some clips? Is it going to have that comedic B-horror movie twist ala evil dead?

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

The hot spots on the second grab is NOT intentional :-/ but was shot with a Polorizer through the rear windshield. The REARVIEW MIRROR shot is from the backseat using a $10.00 Cinesaddle from Target (I ant believe those dude charge $400 for theirs :P

In hindsight I have to agree with taubkin on that second grab; it does seem 'polluted' not that I look at it. Ill have to pick up some B footage this Sunday to possibly intercut or maybe re-shoot that.

If there is anything 'fun' about it (ala Evil Dead) I'd rather keep it real in the sense that its not funny HA HA (Does that make sense?). It was fun shooting as there was no pressures; just 2 filmmakers and 2 willing participants having fun.

I appreciate the feedback 'good' or 'bad'. We still have one more day of shooting for this 'Teaser' episode and as expected Casey (Ex) and I are already gabbing about "Wouldnt it be cool if......"

Do you have a link for the product?

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

great stuff john! did you use your cavision mattebox during the shoot? if so, what 3x3 filters did you use and what grade for the nd? thanks...

Re: Grabs.  Day 1 - Viral Outbreak.

NO. It's just a Canvas Cream Colored bag filled with styrofoam beads (Bean Bag). It's big enough to 'have a seat on' and works perfectly for putting the DVX (w/ Mattebox attached). I found it in the HOME section. It is shaped like a small cylinder but has enough give in the seat to cradle the camera.

Hi Boo

We used the ND Grad for any shot showing the sky in the horizon and the polorizer for viewing through the car windows.
