GoPro HD 2

LOL.... The irony is not lost on me.

This is the same argument (in reverse) wherein some argued about the AF100's "shortcomings" as an event type camera.

Action scenes aren't always a series of slowed down 30p and 60p shots. 24p is not an "unnecessary framerate" for action. That's ridiculous. If the sensor can do higher frame rates it should be no problem to do slower ones right? How is the the lack 24 and 25p in in anyway defensible for a camera in late 2011?

Sure, most people who buy these cameras are going to use them for snowboarding videos and the like and for them 30p/60p will be fine but there's a whole host of possible cinematic uses too and some of these would be better served with 24p. If it's easy to implement why not? What's the rationale in leaving it out? Don't confuse the idiots with too many frame rate options?

It's sure lost on me.

No it's not. Panasonic could not easily have made the AF100 be a better event camera without compromising its abilities as a cinematic camera. In many ways, these two specialties are mutually exclusive.

24p and 30p are not mutually exclusive in any way, shape, or form.

24p would also be easy to implement (by all means someone correct me if I'm wrong here)

It's not the same argument (in reverse or any other way). Apples and oranges.

They will probably do 25 and 24 in a firmware update, as they did with the last HeroHD.

Can´t wait to hook the camera up to a BlackMagic Hyperdeck.

I can see you point, but I'm not sure offering differing frame rates is easy. I'm not saying that looking down my nose. I mean, "I'm not sure." Look how long it took for 24p to hit video cameras.

But I think you answered your own question ("How is the the lack 24 and 25p in in anyway defensible for a camera in late 2011?") with "most people who buy these cameras are going to use them for snowboarding videos." That's what it's made for. They're selling to the broader market. Much like Apple did with FCX.

Well, it gave me a chuckle even if it didn't resonate with you. It is what it is and it is a great little camera for $300. I have the original Hero and I'll get the new one. Who knows... if enough people were to contact GoPro and request 24p it might be a firmware upgrade or made available in the next iteration.

You have to do a firmware update to convert to 25p and 50p this is a current up date for the older version you cannot just set it to 25p Pal , I am sure like the older version there will be one soon , Did the update and it works great .

So, I'll be shooting a docu-reality show using Panasonic Varicams in 24p mode.
How can I incorporate the use of the Hero2 if it doesn't shoot the same frame rate?

same as the old days of computer accessories: plug and pray :)

actually it depends on how new your edit system is. in adobe you just either edit as normal or transcode the gopro files first. either way you should have perfectly fine results. most converters/editors handle mixed media much better these days.

always best to do a test though, to be sure it meets your standards

Thanks for the reply. The production company will be editing on FCP7, just wondering how GoPro's 30p footage will look on a 24p timeline?

Terrible. Convert it to 24p through compressor or After Effects. FCP does a horrible job of changing frame rates.

If you can give up the resolution, shoot 60p instead. 60p -> 24p looks better than 30p -> 24p in most situations and is a lot easier to deal with.
