GoPro 5 and Karma Drone Announced

Yeah the website is annoying but the if that drone works half as well as they claim we will them everywhere.

Anyone know how it compares to a Hero 4 Black? Currently the H4B is $50 more than the H5.

Wondering if the H4 will go down in price, if the H5 is better optics / sensor / processing or if they just took a H4 guts & put it in a new body with some new ifeatures.

The only thing I was really hoping for in the GoPro 5 was 4K 60P........oh well

Image stabilisation was a great add, but I don't need it for my purposes.

The touchscreen will make it light years easier for new users but for existing users it's not really necessary.

Overheating and battery life have both been major issues with the GoPro 4, not sure if they were able to improve functionality in that regard.

Overall, a fairly underwhelming release, the drone looks pretty cool though!

Ive been conteplating a Phantom 4 so this is good timing. Looks like it loses here and there against the more established drones but it has some pretty cool and unique features as well. Going to wait for the reviews and tests and not sure I want to be a gen 1 adopter for a new type of product for a company. That's often a mistake. But damn, some cool features for sure. Like not having to tie up my phone or iPad. Folding is cool. Dual pilot/camera control person is uber cool, that's what the big boys did on a recent TV show I was shooting on. Bravo Go Pro. Hero 5 looks cool too, I have three Herro 4s, I am sure I will pick up a few Hero 5s. You can never have too many Go Pros.

What times we live in: $1k for a high-end drone, a wireless image monitoring system to work with it, a handheld stabilizer, and a high-end action camera.

Yep. I might get one just for sh1ts and giggles.

That is a slippery slope that can drain the wallet or up production value on the cheap.

Most of my goPro footage doesnt get used because it just doesn't match the FS7 and high shutter is so horrid.

But sometimes it does!

It would be really nice for them to clarify if the thing has manual control and can take ND.

It should be noted that the DJI always needs a filter in place to balance, plain or ND, even tiny additions can push these little gimbals out of whack.

It might be better to stop dropping $1k on giggles and fork for a X5raw/osmo which may actually be a tool.

I already own grown up gimbals and have a very grown up drone team thanks Sam. I see the new GoPro drone/camera as a bit of a toy, but it could prove useful.

I prefer my YUNEEC q500+ 4k drone to DJI because it is much quieter by using much larger 13" props and has a handheld unit. I also have the new Sony Action Cam FDR-X3000 that has Balanced Optical SteadyShot in 4K mode on pre-order.

The 'old' GoPro Hero 4 Black can take ND, and you can manually control shutter speed
and ISO. I have a 3DR Solo and it came with weights which screw on or off the gimbal,
depending on if you have an ND filter on your GoPro or not. You can control the GoPro
while it is in the air and you are on the ground, switching from still mode to video, 4k 24p
to 2.7k 60p or down to 1080 120p, start and stop recording or snap stills. Right now I've
got an ND8 mounted on it for flying. My GoPro also has an aftermarket 3.97mm F2.8 lens
installed. Now the Karma looks like GoPro decided to ditch its partnership with 3DR
as they saw a chance to make money off drones, so I'd expect them to have most of
the features the Solo had, in the Karma. However, some things like the ND filters and
holder, are made by third parties for the Hero 4 Black, so it will depend on how similar
the new camera is I suppose.

Any news on the actual SENSOR? I can't see anything, which leads me to believe there are no dynamic range, low-light, or other improvements. Also, it doesn't appear to have any improvements in lens distortion either?

This isn't a bad release, but I was certainly hoping for some improvements to the actual camera. Electronic (instead of optical) image stabilization is also disappointing.

24p only on 2.7k and 1080 but NOT on 4k on the Hero 5 Session? That sucks Go Pro. I hate when companies lock out what should be there strictly for marketing purposes. If the Session can do 4K 25p and 30p, it most certainly can do 24p technically, this is just a lock out to get you to spend the extra $100.00 for the Hero 5 Black.

It sounds like the distortion of the lens itself is probably the same as (or similar to) to the GoPro Hero 4. But the Hero 5 does include "Distortion-Free Wide Angle Video and Photos with New Linear-View Setting":
https://gopro.com/news/The-Launch-GoPro-Unveils-HERO5-and-Karma

Linear seems to be a new field of view option in addition to SuperView, Wide, Medium, and Narrow (which existed on the GoPro Hero 4). Presumably this applies some kind of digital, in-camera fisheye distortion removal. Have to see some video samples before we know how well this works in practice.

The linear mode can be used up to the 2.7K resolutions, but not in 4K which suggests some of the extra pixels are being used to apply the distortion correction.

Not exactly "high end" but all things being equal, not too shabby =)

They should have tried releasing this drone a little earlier. If it was a year ago, it would have been competing with the Parrot Bebop drone but now you have the Yuneec Breeze and the soon to be released DJI Mavic. Still, one majot thing good about that GoPro Karma is that it not only can shoot in 4k with the right GoPro camera, it also has a gimbal. The $500 Yuneec Breeze has a digital stabilizer that doesn't work in 4K. We'll see the Karma compares to the DJI Mavic since that also has a gimbal.

I'm talking specifically people who wants a good quality drone but not have it be too big. Not everyone will want to take a Yuneec Typhoon H or Phantom 4 on trips especially if you're a backpacker.

One thing that I notice is that the controller looks a lot like the NVidia Shield Portable. Some people have bought the NVidia shield to control their Parrot AR and Bebop drones instead of using a smartphone.

I really need to get a 4K capable drone myself.
