GoPro 5 and Karma Drone Announced

I am using the GoPro Hero 4 Black along with 3DR Solo. I shoot in 2.7K 50p (am in PAL country). The challenge I am facing with the 3DR is I still am not confident to catch the 3DR Solo before it lands like that Solo dude does in all his videos. So landing on very uneven terrain is a challenge. Also the Solo can't take off if the surface is not firm. I often carry a wooden plank.

For my documentary, I was taking off the 3DR Solo from a wooden bridge and landing was a big challenge. I wanted a shot of flamingos with the solo slowly flying by their side. I got that with great difficulty. With the Go Pro Karma it looks to be easier. Well, I means my partner. She flies and I look at the tab screen and direct. The Karma now through the app can ensure that the camera operator/director can use another phone and do that and the pilot flies with the original controller. That is very good.

However, am not too happy that Go Pro 5 Black doesn't have a higher bit rate. 60Mb/s is low.

A few highlights:
  • Sensor is the same as the Hero 4, but image processing is claimed to be improved
  • Full manual control of shutter speed and ISO (also added to the Hero 4 via firmware update)
  • 4K HDMI output (8-bit, but not clear if it's 4:2:2 or 4:2:0)
  • Rectangular front lens protector is detachable and replaceable

The last bit about the lens protector was interesting, because it sounds like it may be possible to swap out the clear lens protector for one that's an ND filter.

Same sensor? That is a bit disappointing. That means still about 8 stops of DR, not much could be improved there with processing but it will be interesting to see side by side footage. Full manual control is cool. The replaceable lens protector is okay but the add on NDs and polas work fine for me.
