Good News!!

I wouldn't say rumors websites to be correct when they are simply shown to be not wrong, either by coincidence or something of a cross between dumb luck or good observation.

Just because a rumor mill gets a prediction right doesn't make them proper journalists who report on the facts as they are presented from an official source. If it's not from an official source of information it is, as Barry correctly pointed out, hogwash. Don't feed the rumor mill. Don't watch Jerry Springer. You get what I'm saying. lol

Oh, but if it WERE true, I'd #totes pay for an upgrade.

Wow. The DVX200 is still considered "new" and I haven't even had mine a year...Rumor control says it's gonna be an obsolete, out-classed, steam powered relic before the thumb-wheel breaks! :nads:

Yeah but as said, the actual practical implifications of upgrading each and every DVX-200 already sold go against the grain somewhat. Which other camcorder model in history has received such a recall/upgrade ? ...
On the lower end of the recent vintage - C100 with the DPAF addition and FS700 for the 4K external recording. IIRC, each of those updates ran $500.

PS. But the Magic Lantern hack of the various Canon and Nikon models was free.

Try pricing what Canon and Sony are charging for 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 large sensor cameras and you'll get some idea why Panasonic will sell this as a new camera.

All Panasonic needs to do is sell a camera just like the DVX200 with 4K 10bit 4:2:2 internal in a DVX200-like body, but with a MFT lens mount; sell it for $4,995 USD and christen it AF200.

Boom.

Done.

Mic drop. :D

I think you’ll get a lot of people fired up with that suggestion………..especially former and current AF100 owners.

AF100 users have been begging for that for years. Maybe not those exact specs, but a nice update.

JVC's LS300 poured gasoline on the "friendly-reminder" fire of what an AF100 II could have been!

I’m one of the people that owned an AF100 and loved it; frankly I was disappointed when instead of releasing an AF200 interchangeable lens 4K camera, Panasonic give us the DVX200. Regardless of that I bought a DVX200 and I’m very happy that I did.

The thing is the DVX200 is a traditional video camera and if you’re called on to do a wide variety of work including run and gun as well as events a traditional video camera is the best tool for the job. I vowed I will never be without one again and I was for a while when I had my AF100.

So from my perspective, Panasonic released the right camera at the right time, it was the DVX200. Perhaps rather than up-grading the DVX200 it may now be time to give us the long awaited MFT AF200 4K interchangeable lens camera if they do we will have another great tool for our toolboxes.

Too much competition for an AF200 camera, and likely Panasonic tech would not have won out against Canon or Sony. With their new GH5 tech I think they stand a good chance against the competition.

What will probably happen before DVX200 MKII or DVX300 or whatever is that, by NAB'17, either Atomos, BMD or Video Devices will come out with a matchbook size 4K ProRes recorder for around $500. It won't have the monitor but it will be more budget friendly. And that will take care of the "upgrades" for many a model.

That's right. Panasonic put out a top spec camera for $2,000. The $5,000 4K ILC niche went to Sony. And, unless the Chinese force a free-for-all, it'll still be a cartel controlled market.

By the way, Red Raven is what AF-200 might have been (if one also wanted internal Raw recording, etc).

And willing to pay about $12K for a working camera package. (no lenses)

From a major manufacturer in a non-cartel environment, $6.000-$8,000. FS-5 does Raw to Q7+ via SDI for about $8,000 with the APS-C sensor.
