:2vrolijk_08: Ok This was posted on 4/3third rumors!

Source A: A source at Panasonic has told me they are looking at upgrading the DVX200 to include 10bit recording. This may involve a paid return and upgrade program, it hasn’t been decided yet. They are unsure if the internal boards and processor will need to be changed to allow this. Either way my source thinks an upgrade is very likley on the DVX200 as the GH5 is currently a lower priced camera with higher specs.

Source B: Two of my friends at CES heard from a Panasonic rep that the DVX200 is to get 10bit 4K internal recording, the rep did not say when or if it would be a new model or a paid upgrade, or any more details. Just that it would be available around the same time as it was for the GH5.

Any truth to this Barry?

10bit internal recording is the logical next step for the DVX200. Let's hope it comes as a paid or un-paid Firmware up-grade and not a new camera.

It's likely to be MKII (or whatever they name it). It should then receive other upgrades as well.

|I'd say a 'Mk2' is more likely but who knows ? I was under the impression there was only so far you could go with internal 4K recording, if you want to use SDXC cards ? And also that the DVX-200 was at it's limit in hardware terms already.

Of course not. Anything you ever read on those rumor sites is made-up hogwash. They're about as accurate as a blind man on a shooting range, after he's had a few drinks and his buddies have spun him around a few times to get him dizzy. You will never hear actual company news "leaked" to some rumor site. A multi-billion-dollar communications company issues press releases, it doesn't "leak" insider info to some "rumor" site. I mean, think about it -- that just isn't how a major organization communicates with its customers!

Instead of the "FT" in their rumor name meaning "Four Thirds", I find it more accurate to call them "Full of Turds".

If there is any shred of a grain of a molecule of an atom of a quark of a string of truth to this whatsoever, it probably came about by some rumormonger asking some salesman "will you upgrade the DVX200 to 10-bit recording", and whoever they asked said "well, I don't think so, I mean, the hardware doesn't allow it, they only way they could do that is you'd have to actually send the camera back to the factory and they'd have to install some different hardware and I'm sure that would cost a lot." So the rumormonger took that and said "good news! The factory is going to upgrade the DVX200 to 10-bit!!!!" This is nothing more than the "fake news" being decried worldwide. They're engaged in a race for headlines, and they don't care about accuracy.

Philip Johnston got it right.

And reading those rumor sites is about as productive as jamming needles under your fingernails. Might be more fun, but ultimately it's about equivalent in value for time spent.

That's not true. I've frequented various rumor sites for the last 4 years, and 43 rumors (and the other ones the same person runs) has been correct dozens of times.

No company would like its information to leak, but it's really not up to it because people will always talk, especially if money is involved. In any business in the world.

So much free distribution for everyone these days...trust that they all want their information (correct information!) displayed in as many places as possible.

Have they been wrong? Many times (obviously)...but they have been right as well providing photos of unreleased products, exact specs, release dates, etc.

Although I respect your opinion Barry and your expertise, 4/thirds has rumored a lot of other cameras and equipment, way before press release's in the past, and they have been pretty accurate. I thought about the DVX200 being too costly and time consuming for Panasonic to do a board swap of some kind, Just wishful thinking I guess. Personally, I enjoy reading a number of Tech/Film Industry boards, as well as this one.

Which raises the point -- if you know they're likely to be wrong, why bother reading what they say at all? Seems such a waste of time to me. There's absolutely nothing, nothing, nothing productive you can do with any information you find on a rumor site. Until it's official, it's not official, so it's meaningless.

Is it possible they can ply someone with drinks and get them to say something they shouldn't? Sure. But, that's the thing -- as a matter of policy, no company is going to have their employees talking to rumor sites. Anyone who knows anything that's confidential, is going to have to treat it as confidential. That early stuff you always read about that's completely wrong? As like as not, that could be some plot by the company to discover which traitorous bastard is leaking proprietary company information, so they might be planting stories to see what leaks.

Look, let me put it this way -- I've been around these companies for many, many years. I know folks. I've spoken to the engineers who build these things. I even speak some Japanese. And I'll tell you straight up, anything you hear from a salesman or a trade-show representative or, as many times as not, some actual legitimate company rep, about unreleased far-off product, is likely to be complete hogwash. The people who you can get access to, are those who are there to sell what they have TODAY. Sales. That's their focus. It does them no good to hype you up about a product you cannot buy. Those who know what's coming next? They're not accessible to the public (or only very rarely, and even then, they're strictly disciplined). Japanese companies are private. They don't share a lot, and they absolutely don't share it with people who don't need to know about it.

So yes, there's going to be an occasional dishonest employee, obviously. And in that case, the rumor site is getting its info from someone who is, ipso facto, dishonest -- so should you trust it? I wouldn't.
Another major source is going to be just flat-out guessing. Even a blind pig will find an acorn once in a while, so can you just make stuff up and have a chance of it being right, or "right enough"? Sure. I could have predicted there'd be a GH5 about thirty seconds after the GH4 was announced. And I would have predicted it was still 4/3's, and with an XLR adapter, and 4K/60p. I might have been right, I might have been wrong. I mean, I'll go on record right now -- Panasonic is going to intoduce a new GH6 sometime in 2018, and it'll have a 4/3's sensor with 4K/120p and 6K video, all with 10-bit 4:2:2, and it'll be smaller and have longer-lasting batteries than the GH5 does. There -- do I get an FT5 for that? I'll even go for an FT2 -- the GH6 will record 8K at 24p and 30p. So now, let's check back in a couple of years and see if Full O' Turds' accuracy is any higher than mine -- and my "rumor" is made-up predictions with absolutely zero inside knowledge of a GH6, I'll tell you that right now.

Sorry, I've got no respect for those sites or even what they're trying to accomplish. I think their track record is pretty bad, and they're based on inherent dishonesty -- they either have to rely on someone breaking their word and violating their company's trust, or they just reprint lies and guesses. There is no other way for them to get valid information. As such, I think a whole raft of their information is bad, and when they do get something valid, it's only because of infidelity and breach of trust on part of the person who leaked it. It's just bad business all around, and when you can't rely on what they're saying, then -- why give 'em the time of day?

Hell, even the National Enquirer occasionally prints something that turns out to be true. But I wouldn't spend my time reading it.

haha, I hear you.

I'm not really going to consider nor debate their ethical standards. The world moves fast and is full of compromises and no one cares about anyone really.

I'm just saying they have been accurate many times and they don't just specialize in rumors, but also:

- They gather all of the offers/deals from Amazon, B&H, Adorama, etc. and post them daily.
- Link to many YouTubers' videos/reviews about random gear.
- Provide various articles about new cameras and lenses that are shipping soon or why they are delayed (general news).
- Let users submit their stills/footage

...just lots of REAL information all in one place. Rumors are just one part of their business regardless of the name, and the sites have grown to be just like many other outlets out there.

So the false rumors may be in bad taste (to some), but with all due respect, and I hope this doesn't sound mean, I just don't think you have given them a fair chance and may be a bit too quick to judge their overall operation.

The DVX200 has UHS I card slots which would have to be replaced to accommodate the extra pins on faster UHS II cards for a start. Isn't going to happen ... .

Well, you're certainly correct on that. I haven't given them the time of day since I first saw what they were doing.

I've been working with Japanese companies since the '80's, when I was at Westwood Studios. I've worked with many of the biggest names over there in video games and in camera technologies. I currently work in the aerospace industry -- all of which to say, I've signed extensive, heavy-duty nondisclosure agreements with many, many companies. Unless it's public information released elsewhere, I won't even say WHICH companies I've signed nondisclosure agreements with! And I just find the whole concept of sites trafficking in rumors and gossip to be reprehensible. And especially the concept that a culture like the Japanese would be just willy-nilly stabbing their company in the back just to -- what, feed a rumor site? Seriously, it's incomprehensible. You're not ever going to hear quality, valid information from real company insiders on a rumor site.

So, yes, I find the whole concept of trafficking in rumors and innuendo and "secrets" to be distasteful, and if any of it is true, then it's brought about by someone acting despicably. There's bad karma all over it. So, you're right -- no, I don't go there, I don't give them a fair chance, I really don't want anything to do with 'em and I don't want to support them in their efforts to betray a company's proprietary information and trade secrets. I also have no use whatsoever for TMZ or Gawker or any of those types of publications, even though I'm sure there are some people who find them entertaining, it ain't my cup of tea.

I read Pro Football Talk on a regular basis (used to visit it several times daily) and I mostly read the "Rumor Mill" page. A lot of "rumors" aren't really rumors but just links off the various regional papers that cover a local NFL team. Regardless, the site is very popular - it made its creator Mike Florio a wealthy man - and the rumor page is very popular.

And, going back a few years, I recall listening to the "Hot Stove League" shows on the various Midwest AM stations. During the winter/off-season, those were popular too.

And, much like all these sport talk shows give free publicity to sports they cover, the camera gossip sites give free and often needed publicity to their brands of choice (poor Nikon Rumors guy, huh? ... he was the first one out there on the webs). Judging off the number of comments made there, these site visitors are legitimate and long time consumers of the various brands, so I don't think they're neglected by the manufacturers on the whole. But it's funny that Barry brought up the "fake news" meme here because I believe that the photo-video rumors are crafted much the same way as the political stories, by having the information leaked piecemeal to the preferred gossip sites. As long as the source of the leak is credible, i.e., has a history of providing accurate details, the controlled leak itself is deemed credible too.

PS. In sports, the leak sources are often agents, who want to disseminate a favorable opinion of their clients. Considering that the world of journalism lives off these sources, the only question is whether a particular story is a case of a journalist pursuing the source or source pursuing the journalist. In real life, it's often a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" type of a relationship. And, if you accept this as a fact of human behavior, I don't see why one industry ought to be different than any other.

Anyone that follows Apple products knows that well above 90% of the rumors that you hear end up being true. I believe that some, not all companies leak this information in order to excite their fanboy customers about their next product. I'm not saying at all that Panasonic would do that but there are companies that put gag orders into effect but yet on a grand scale the rumor mills are fed with correct information down to the decimal point.

Yeah but as said, the actual practical implifications of upgrading each and every DVX-200 already sold go against the grain somewhat. Which other camcorder model in history has received such a recall/upgrade ? I think if there's any truth at all in this rumour, it's that yeah we will eventually see an improved 10 bit version of the 200 released sometime in the future. Not a hardware upgrade, but a brand new off the shelf variant.

Yes, much like Panasonic upgraded the original DVX100, I would expect a brand new DVX-300 camera with 10-bit 4:2:2 recording and other upgrades/fixes compared to the original DVX-200 camera.
