Good Idea to watch edited HD footage on TV?

I really wish there was something out there like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/644633-REG/Digital_Foci_P23_250_Picture_Porter_35_250GB.html

That had a HDMI out so once you finished editing in CS5 or Final Cut you could offload your HD footage and view it full quality on a plasma instead of going through the hassle of downgrading it to SD for DVD or any of that.

Wouldn't that be a charm for us to see our beautiful edited work on a plasma by hooking up a hard drive through HDMI.

There are DVI to HDMI cables out there, as well as HDMI adapters for display port and mini display port. For watching the final product there are plenty of HD media streamers out there. I use an Apple TV, but the upcoming Boxee box would be good, The Western Digital WD TV comes to mind as well.

the Digital WD TV doesn't tell you how much GB it can hold when I searched for it. That seems like somthing I would use for sure.

Matrox have a solution for a laptop as long as your laptop has a express card slot, it's a break out box hdmi in and out also many other connections
Matrox MXO2 Mini
Matrox MXO2 LE

I see what you're saying, a device that you wouldn't have to be teathered to a computer or laptop. More of an "Ipod style" HD Movie Player with an HDMI....

What you could do is get a UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC). Many of them have 5"-7" screens and are basically pocket sized computers. Many of them tout their HD playing abilities.

I came across these the other day on Ebay, there were a bunch of different variants of them, different companies, some faster, some smaller, all relatively cheap made to be cheap subs for the Ipad. I have never heard of anyone using them, but there are some forums dedicated to them if you google "smartq v7". Looks like there are quite a few videos on their features, you could probably see if it does what you want it to before hand. Says 1080p video out via HDMI...

It just acts as an interface between your computer and your television, via your home network. It'll "hold" as much footage as your computer will hold. I've just got one and lemme tell ya, they are great little things. I don't use mine in the professional sense, but they could definitely be used to send consumer standard pictures to a small reference monitor, for example.

One thing I am wondering is the purpose of a breakout box for grading. Can't someone just go with a Mini DP to HDMI cable from a Macbook Pro for instance and use the color bar system of Final Cut for optimizing an HD monitor of choice? Or in the field why not the same system with a Marshall HDMI field monitor (built in color bar/blue adjustment) plus the same cable?

Yeah but I dont want an interface, im looking for a legitimate hard-drive that you don't have to hook up your computer and tv at the same time, you can just transfer files from your computer to the hard drive UN-PLUG it and plug in into your tv via HDMI. Is there anything out there that can do it. The reason I say this is cause what if you want to go over your buddies house and show him your edited stuff, this would solve the problem.

Someone should definitely invent something like this, im sure if the hard drive was small an compact (maybe like a 10gb flash drive) with an HDMI out and easy to transfer your movies too it would put blue-ray burners out of business.

Did you happen to read my post? Looks like it may have been done in a sense, and they're pretty cheap too...

oh whoops! actually didnt! looks like it does have HDMI out but think maybe it only lets you see the computer screen on your tv probably.

Well, it says it supports 1080p HDMI, and since that is a video format, not a computer format, I would suspect that it will output a video to the tv. If you can see the computer screen on the tv, then you can play the video and it would play on your tv. Am I missing something here?:undecided

Yea I actually went to bestbuy to check it out and you can actually plug in a memory stick (say like an 8gb or 16gb) into the usb port so essentially meaning you wouldn't need a computer but I would need to fool around with it more.

They have them at Bestbuy? Everything I have seen looks like you have to order them from China. Interesting. Well good luck.

It's old but since the problem could arise to many users - there are relatively cheap boxes that really can use external USB HDD or Flash drives to play HD content. Here are just some of them:

- Western Digital HD Multimedia Player
- Popcorn Hour A110
- TViX 6500a HD multimedia player

Some of them have internal HDD and some offer just a couple of USB ports so You could use an external one or stick.

Please be aware that having support for 1080p output, doesn't mean that the device is able to decode 1080p content - so watch out about that too -these particular devices can.

Hope this is useful.

Yeah but that would mean I would have to use a desktop, im using a laptop and even if you were using a desktop you would have to drag it over to where ur tv is...i think if im correct...not sure really how this works

My laptop has native HDMI out and will play 1080p HD to a TV no problem.
