Good Hyperdeck Shuttle news

I've heard this, but just tested it yesterday and can now confirm. Both the HDMI and SDI out are always live even if the AF100 is set to 24psf (48 fields) out. This means you get a non standard HDMI signal. Even tho its non standard, my 24 inch Sony Google TV client monitor reads the signal just fine. As some of you know the AF100 drops the HDMI signal when setting the SDI to psf out. Now with the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, what this means is you can still save space on the SSD's by setting the AF100 to psf out and not recording the pulldown, also save time by not removing that pulldown in post, and still get an HDMI signal out of the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 that can be used on some monitors. This is good news for me. Thought I'd share.

Nice! Thanks for the report. Some people may even find it worth the price for that feature alone.

Very nice from Blackmagicdesign, but I did have to experiment a lot to get my PMW-F3 to trigger recording. No support from BMD what so ever. Trigger recording is working... but only after I already started (and stopped) the recording manually on the Hyperdeck Shuttle a first time. So first just start and stop recording manually once, and after that start and stop trigger works from the PMW-F3. Hope this will be mended.

I'm not seeing that on the F3. As long as I have the Hyperdeck ready to record (not in playback mode) it fires right up. Playback/Record mode is toggled by hitting the Stop button on the Hyperdeck. Hope this helps.

You don't have to start and stop the first recording you just have to hit the stop button only. This is because when the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 turns on for the first time, it's in playback mode. Pressing stop puts it in record mode. if you have an onboard monitor connected after the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, you'll know when it's in record mode when you see a live image on the monitor.

Only downsides I can see are:
- poor internal battery
- limited codec options
- not weatherproof
- You're tied to SSDs rather than CF or SDHC cards. That may not matter to most, but if you're working with clients they may well want to bring a card with them to the shoot and they're unlikely to have SSDs.

Other than that it's superb value IMHO.

I would add .. no LCD screen (as compared to Atomos, SoundDevices, etc.).
DIN connector .. requires special cable.

Am I understanding correctly, that with DNxHD you can get an hour on a 128 Gb SSD?

Also, can anyone identify a specific cable to connect to the AF100 SDI?

Thanks.

Dnxhd 220 at 1080p 25fps is 1.4gb per minute so yes more than an hour.
there is a link earlier in the thread to an American retailer at $14.99 for the lead, European sellers seem to be chancing it as I have seen it for as much as £56!!!!!!!

Thanks for that info.
I also got an e-mail back from AbleCine indicating about 74 gigs for an hour with DNxHD . . . Perfect (for me).
Pretty sure I'm going this way, just want to wait til I see what's new at NAB.

Not sure if I'm doing something incorrectly, but I was shooting a music video and wanted it at 24fps (usual "movie look" excuse). Since the SDI out on the AF100 gives two choices - 1080i or 720p - I had to shoot at 720p. The problem is, either the shuttle (V2) isn't detecting start/stop TC, or the AF100 isn't outputting it correctly at this res. I tried every 720 mode and sure enough, the shuttle refuses to start/stop recording when using the AF100's rec buttons. On the flips side, every 1080 mode will properly start/stop recording. Was a pain to have to start the AF100 and then the shuttle, then stop the AF100 and the shuttle. 12 hours of that bummed me out.

Oh yeah - the battery life is really really bad on it (agreeing with that being a major "con".)

So, did I understand it right that with the flag function the Hyperdeck Shuttle will start recording when you hit the record button on your AF100?
