Good Hyperdeck Shuttle news

I have both, Hyperdeck Shuttle ver. 1 and Samurai. First I've bought Hyperdeck with a Crucial C300 256GB drive, that holds datarate perfectly but it is only 22 minutes of uncompressed video. Furthermore internal battery duration was only about 30 minutes and working with big files was annoying. So I've bought Samurai. It was much better as battery life, file dimensions and worked with spinning disks (but it eats battery with hdd) but I've experienced a lot of gamma issues with Prores files (I'm a windows user). So I've discovered that I should upgrade my NLE to Edius 6.06 (but I'm not still shure it will work correctly) and I should upgrade my CS4 to CS 5.5 also and this means other money. So now I'm waiting for Avid codec on Samurai and I hope it will be 100% windows compatible, without gamma issues due to the *.mov container. Otherwise I will sell my Samurai and I'll keep Hyperdeck: its files are big but are perfect. I transcode in Canopus HQ lossless and I can edit in all my workstations.

Does not HDMI export rolling timecode?
HDMI, by definition, does not have any sort of timecode. Sony has managed to piggyback timecode onto some of their cameras' HDMI signals, but they are by definition nonstandard. The HDMI specification has no provision for timecode.

I bought 2 128gb Kingston SSDNow V100 SSD's which BlackMagic recommends for uncompressed, but when I try to record uncompressed it drop frames. I benched marked both SSD's (purchased separately from 2 different reputable retailers) at around an average of 90MB/s each which is 720mbps. This is plenty fast enough for DNxHD, but comes short for uncompressed. Don't know why Blackmagic recommends them for uncompressed.

Do you have the Kingston V+100 or V100? Last time I checked they recommended the V+100, there could be a significant difference between the two.

Also, is there any potential risk in using the SmallHD D-Tap cable over the Switronix cable? The price difference is huge.

I've been using a Shuttle with power straight off the D-Tap since it came out. No issues. The spec sheet for the Shuttle states 12 - 18v.

If you do not have any need or desire to record uncompressed does it matter how fast of an SSD you have?

As weird as this sounds, I plan on using this to record still images from a production switcher (images, not video footage) so I do not imagine that I would need a whole lot of hard drive space. I can get smaller and slower SSD's for around 60 dollars which would really help me control the price on this unit.

I just want to double check and confirm that this device is able to play back footage in real time as well.

It'll play back the last clip recorded for sure. It might do more, but I have't found out a way to do that yet. BlackMagic has poor documentation of this product.

Playback works just fine. The Stop button toggles between recording and playback mode. While stopped, the fast forward and rewind buttons cycle through the clips. Pick the one you want and press play. While playing, the fast forward and rewind controls zip back and forth through the clip. Not unlike using some DVRs.

It's easy to use in practice, although some sort of on screen display would be very helpful. They've promised to add it (there's and unused Disp. button), hope they do.

Awesome I am glad to hear that. Out of curiosity is there anything aside from not having a clean HDMI output that would prevent using this unit with DSLR's?

If I recall the GH2 has a clean HDMI out. I might buy this unit for still storing images but I might also use it to record from a GH2 or to at least send a signal from the GH2 to a switcher

GH2's image is clean, as in no display icons and what not on the screen, but there is some other issues. Read here.

Have you idea how the Shuttle should notify me that the SSD is going to be full? Should I simply check my camera TC? I'm going to buy another SSD and I should like to understand WHEN I have to change the drive.

Thanks

Gary
