Good Hyperdeck Shuttle news

What? DNxHD in a .mov wrapper works in both FCP7 and FCPx with no issues? Please reconfirm this because that is HUGE!!!!! I will buy one right now if it works on FCP7. Wow!

Could you send me a small clip or two so I can try this out?

This is true, you just need to install the free Avid quicktime codecs. At first I was getting gamma issues while removing the pulldown on footage I recorded via HDMI with every option I tried (Compressor, JES Deinterlacer, etc). I originally skipped over FCS3 and went from FCS2 straight to FCPX, but lost some functionality in FCS2 when updating to Lion. Anyway as of yesterday I now have FCS3 and Cinematools works again, and the gamma issue while removing pulldown seems to be gone.

Stephen.

Is the Shuttle triggering from TC roll recognition or Flag recognition?

It does both. There is a set of radio buttons in the interface of the software to select which mode you prefer, or off if you'd rather start manually.

All bases are covered.

Thanx Stephen

Now I am trying to imagine where the software ( radio buttons) are displayed on a device that dos not have a display screen?

The utility application resides on your computer and connects to the Shuttle via USB. With this utility you can control the TC trigger settings and recording format (Shuttle 2 only). The utility will also upgrade the firmware on the device the first time it is executed.

Download the latest code from BMD's website. It's free and no registration is required - there is a download only button at the bottom of the page.

Ah ha...I get it...thanx.

Will upgrade my V1 BMHD Shuttle ...but expecting that the Samurai will be my go to device in most circumstances.

This is fantastic news.

The one thing that has always irked me about the Hyperdeck Shuttle though, is IT WAS DESIGNED BACKWARDS.

What I mean is, the SSD insertion slot/bay should have been on the OTHER END. This is PAINFULLY obvious.

They way it's designed now:

- If you mount it HORIZONTALLY at the rear of the camera (which would be one of the most desirable/logical configurations, with A/B batter plate mounted below rail-level etc. for a nice and proper rig) - so the buttons and indicators etc. are right-side-up and facing the camera operator - THEN THE SLOT/BAY IS POINTING TOWARD the camera, and the SSD is INACCESSIBLE. Ugh.

- If you mount it VERTICALLY at the rear of the camera (again, with a plate with A/B battery) - so the buttons and labels are facing the camera operator, and the SSD slot/bay is facing upward (so the thing is actually accessible) - then the battery is going to be BETWEEN the Shuttle and the camera. Again, UGH.

Horizontally, it should be Shuttle on top, battery below, SSD toward the back - with buttons and indicators facing camera operator.

Vertically, it should be camera, then shuttle then plate, and battery on the back - again, with buttons and indicators facing camera operator. Go look at the way the Ki Pro Mini mounts. That's the way it should be.

Every intuitive, optimal mounting configuration I come up with for this thing ends up with the buttons and indicators on the wrong side of the camera, and/or the SSD slot/bay faciing the wrong direction.

This is so simple and obvious, it's one of those "smack myself on the forehead and say ugh" kind of things. I don't know what they were thinking...

You forgot that once you buy this thing...you then have to go and buy a "hole" to mount the thing with ...and also some special cables to connect it to a camera.

Form over function design.

I agree it's not ideal. I personally mount it vertically and have the buttons on the left side, now that you can set up timecode trigger and record flag trigger.

I think you're saying you have the buttons on the non-operator side of the camera - but that it doesn't matter now that there are triggers - correct?

Doesn't that still create the annoying issue of the cables coming out operator-side then?

Yeah sorry I was thinking looking into lens (Left), operator right. I have 90 dergree cables so it's not so bad.

I have this to go from camera to the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, and I custom ordered a 2 foot version as well to go for the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 to my SmallHD DP6. And I power it with this.

I left FCP due solely due to the Gamma flagging issues. You're saying you are no longer experiencing any changes to gamma or contrast levels?
Also, what is your pulldown removal process, I thought this was performed on import?

Thx

All the options except Cinematools that I've tried transcode the footage either to ProRes or it retranscodas to DNxHD. Cinematools just removes the frames, so it doesn't effect the gamma. I use FCPX and the "remove pulldown" option while importing is grayed out.

Timecode start/stop and record flag start/stop are limited to SDI because the HDMI standard does not have timecode of record flags.

As for HDD's i don't know, but I doubt it.

"As some cameras don’t output the start/stop flag in the standard way, this new update also includes a new rolling timecode record trigger feature.
This means now virtually any camera or device that outputs RP-188 timecode can be used to start and stop HyperDeck Shuttle recording!"

Does not HDMI export rolling timecode?

Spinning disk drives can write 300Mb/s and DNxHD is 220Mb/s I'm going to post how it goes after trying next week.
It will work if BM lets it. Because it works on Samurai

Answer from elsewhere "Tested a 7200RPM Seagate Momentus spinning disk HD. No go. Will not record DNxHD. SSD only."

So I bought two 64gb drives á 38 min

I bought 2 128gb Kingston SSDNow V100 SSD's which BlackMagic recommends for uncompressed, but when I try to record uncompressed it drop frames. I benched marked both SSD's (purchased separately from 2 different reputable retailers) at around an average of 90MB/s each which is 720mbps. This is plenty fast enough for DNxHD, but comes short for uncompressed. Don't know why Blackmagic recommends them for uncompressed.

Jeepers, I had no idea this existed! So this thing pretty much craps on a Samurai, at least price-wise, right?
Only thing I see at first glance is that, there's no monitor, and it's not recording ProRes422. Hmmmnn, interesting.
