i have an annual film/video screening in my back yard for which people who have no experience with film/video create work. in the past, i've provided people with super8 cameras and a sony 1-chipper and they would bring their work to the screening. this year, i directed, shot, and edited everyone's projects. they focused on the ideas. it was a great time, and good experience for me.

i'm linking to one of my favorites here. a friend of mine who is an architect wanted to cover part of a golf match and have another friend commentate. we shot and edited this very quickly.

enjoy.

That commentator was a crack up! A bit long and drawn out, but kept me wanting to hear the humor. So I watched the whole thing.

If you're a golfer or a golf fan then you'll enjoy this. The Peter Aliss sounding commentator was out of his mind. I laughed out loud several times. I would have liked to see some graphics, like showing the names and their scores, like a PGA broadcast. It would have added to the ridiculousness of the whole thing. I'll be awaiting the re-match.

really funny. the commentator was great. I'm a serious golfer so naturally this appealed to me, especially the context in which he was using the golfing terms.

good job

The images did seem a little dark to me or maybe it's just my monitor
What time of day/camera settings did you use.

thanks for everyone's comments. yep, i wanted to add graphics, and perhaps i will at some point. it's dark on my monitor too. i had to stop down to avoid too much blow out in the sky. hopefully i'll get around to fixing that. we shot it at 9 in the morning.

the commentating was recorded in one take. it's actually quite fun and sometimes annoying to play golf with that guy (he's the one with black hair), because he announces every shot.

thanks for watching.

This was hilarious. The commentator rules.

Anyone contemplating if Golf should be called a sport should just watch this great send up.

(It's not!)

It's simple really

Any thing you do that alocohol makes more fun; is not a sport

Running a 10K though Mud and water and drinking a 12 pack is not fun

Riding in golfcart while munching on a hot dog and polishing off a 12 pack, is.

Playing 5 on 5 full court basketball to 21 by 2 while drinking beer is not fun

Having the beer girl bring you ice cold beer and food while on the 11th hole is.

Having a referee call a flagrant on you is hardcore

Having a golf warden tell you to hurry up because the 60 year olds party of 4 is going to play though on you is not hardcore

Okay, threadjack over

do you not enjoy drinking beer whilst consistently exerting physical energy?

more "sports" myself and others have enjoyed playing while consuming water with hops and barley:
ping pong
badminton (won tournament this weekend)
pool
bowling
ultimate frisbee
darts
hashing (may be a southern thing)

golf wardens are control freaks.

bottoms up.

Here is another sport I like to engage in whilst drinking

Great commentator. To be honest, the footage was redundant and a bit boring, BUT I still watched the whole thing happily because of the great send-up of an overly dramatized telecast. Good stuff. The pleasant but undeniable pretentiousness of Peter Aliss with the goofiness of David Feherty. I think this would make a great short film if you ever decided to re-shoot with a little more pizazz and the aforementioned graphics. Fun stuff, nonetheless.

i hear you about the footage being redundant. we were doing straight coverage of every shot for three holes. how would you add "pizazz"? curious, because there's a good chance we'll shoot another, and i'd love to add some of that. we won't have cherry-pickers or cranes, but we do have a camera.

thanks for the comments. keep em' coming.

On the contrary; beer is a part of my diatary pyramid plan .....

What is hashing ?

hashing: http://www.atlantahash.com/

i've actually never done it, but i do intend to in the near future. just found out about it recently. basically, you chase people through the woods and get filthy. coolers of beer meet you at the end. i like the woods and i like beer.

"Pizazz", "pep", "sha-boom", a "lil' of that showbiz magic.."

Maybe "pizazz" was the wrong word, but variety is needed. Some more close-ups of the golfers. Some close ups of the ball on the tee being struck (60i maybe, then slowed down). I think I only remember one or two cut-aways to the balls landing and even flying (I know the blimp shots will be a bit tough to pull off...) Some really wide shots of individual holes if you have an elevated perspective. Maybe even climb a tree or bring a ladder for a couple of overhead shots of the players... Highhat/ground shots on greens would be great, too, and easy to pull off.

Just watch any network golf telecast and take notes for any shots you could pull off given your limitations. With a variety of shots and some graphics, I can see a really great short coming of this. Seems to me that 5-7 minutes would be a good target.

Again, funny stuff.

John. Have you noticed those games get easier with a drink?

It's like time is slowing down just for you.

thanks dustino. great suggestions. we did this really on the fly. there was actually a single behind us and we managed to keep up the pace enough for him not to have to play through. i really enjoyed shooting that way, and look forward to doing it again with the challenge of adding pizazz. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
