GH2 God i love my gh2...

I find it strange that anyone would pick the gh2 over the f3, especially with s-log, Go to Timur's vimeo channel and watch the s-log footage in Vegas, it's holds the highlights like no other camera other than the Alexa. It's simply beautiful. I have a gh2, I like it alot, but it's no where near the f3 with log. it really isn't.

Not strange at all. Maybe that person wants to use those extra dollars on other parts of the production. If you are making a micro budget film, then the GH2 maybe your only option and to say it's no where near an F3 is debatable. Can the average audience member see the difference? I'm of the opinion that if the story is right and you have a talented group surrounding you, the GH2 will hold up against all these higher priced cameras. The good new is that it's a great time to be a filmmaker.

I'm just going by what the post stated, he said he has access to an f3, so I was taking that as it wouldn't cost anything to use. Of course if your renting, then anyone has access to an f3. My point is the F3 has a better image, with better latitude, xlr's, nd filters, s-log, 4,4,4, ect... I'm not saying the gh2 cant produce cinema quality footage, it can easily. I just dont think it compares to the f3 image, thats all I'm saying. Yes of course the dp, plays a major role, as does the gaffer, set production, location, ect...

exactly, then there's no point in these "I love my camera threads" It should be " I love my script" instead :)

I love the GH2 for Nature/Wildlife. The crisp/details really stick out when you look at things like leaves, trees, grass, rocks, cliffs, sand, etc. The clarity is noticeably better
to my Canon. (and not just pixel-peeping).

And a step further:

The time for "we have no excuses" was over 3 months ago ;)
It's time to deliver.
Have you got the goods?
Or are you just a pixel peeper?
Huh?

Sorry, missed the bit about having access to a F3. Although, there are other advantages to using GH2 such as size, which opens up a lot of possibilities in terms of shot selection. The steathy nature also may play a role especially when working outside permits.

Guys really what it came down to for us was workflow, Production time. I have shot on almost all of these cams minus EPIC, and Alexa, (I would love to shoot Alexa) RED stuff isnt reliable PERIOD. Sony F3 is a great cam, but again too big. For our Audience they arent going to see a difference. And again since we are in controlled shooting environments, being a DP you have to know your limits, and I DO Know them on the GH2, so I can push them or I cant push them. we arent shooting chroma, so 4:4:4: or 4:2:2 isnt really needed, and im SOOO used to coloring 8bit 4:2:0 since the DSLR revolution began, that I know my work arounds as does our colorist. You can follow us on www.momentoftruthfilm.com The trailer was shot on 7D but we are finishing the feature in GOP1 on the GH2. AND WE LOVE IT. dont get me wrong I love all those other cams, but I would rather have my GH2 with my LOMO primes :)

The most important thing for me when it comes to choosing a camera for my feature, is that when used right, it will illicit a great response from the average movie goer (ascetically speaking). I've shown some of the best gh2 videos I could find on Vimeo along with some of my own footage to peers and acquaintances, and the general reaction is that they think that the footage looks "like a movie". Once you reach that point... It's almost hard to ignore that. I've owned an HV40, 7D, a Mark II and a few other cameras over the years and they've all been great. But the general perception that it looks like film, has not come until now with the GH2-X. So if I've pleased my audience in that regard, it makes it so much easier to focus getting other equipment I'll need for the film on / under budget. I guess it's just hard for me to watch a small portion of RED and higher priced camera buyers go into debt or be severely limited as to what they can produce based on the price of the camera alone. Then again, getting stuck in a pixel peeping feedback loop of camera owners battling it out, it's hard not to be looking at everything under a microscope as "we do" and yearn for the next best thing every 5 minutes. We're all camera nerds to a certain degree, but if we step back and just look at it like the average person would, they wouldn't or perhaps couldn't tell the difference at all. Not that they don't care, or a GH2 is just "good enough" to please the audience.. it's that, quite literally most will never actually perceive any real difference.

that sounds very exiting, knowing the average audience can indeed say something "looks like film",
as opposed to "us" or more professional people that can clearly see it and easily explain
WHY it's different than all the other dslr's.

This is so perfectly stated... Just perfect.

About 6 months ago I shot my first major GH2 video for a client and my wife came in to watch the edit. Mind you, she's been suffering through this now for like 10 years and she obliges me... When she saw the footage off the Gh2, she said that it was the next level and kept saying wow! Wow... wow. She said it looked like my feature film that I shot on Super 16 and it basically bankrupted me some 10 years before that. She even wanted to see the Gh2 cause she didn't believe that it was coming from that camera.. especiall since it's so cheap. I mean, I paid over 10k for my HVX200 and she never ever said that about that camera..

So I completely and wholeheartedly agree and when I read this it makes me realize that I'm set with my cameras. I'm going to put my money into gettting some name talent.. and most importantly... spending money on Advertising and marketing and getting the bloody thing sold. Who gives a crap about the camera really cause the audience doesn't... and I'd rather spend money on a great audio package, and some lighting and grip... I also bought a steadicam package as there's nothing I don't think that a person can do with a small budget to really get to that next level quite like a steadicam...

I also want to spend money on production design, feeding crew and because I"m going to shoot my feature in the UK.... So to me, being able to shoot my feature with 5 GH2's makes complete sense and then when I'm done, I'll sell 4 of them and recover 80 percent of my money... Same thing with the lenses. I'll buy them and sell them when I'm done!

I agree.. everything about it does make sense. What's so fantastic is that you can buy a used GH2 and recover 100% of your investment selling it back onto ebay/craigslist. You might even make money, since the GH3 wont' be out until the end of 2012 most likely and who knows, maybe they will lock down their firmware better than before. This is absolutely THE time to buy and use this camera...

Amen, Although I feel that there's been no excuse since 24p on almost any Hd cam, even the old dvx could produce nice images, and back when it came out, we all thought it was stunning. my how spoiled we have all become. lol

As stated over and over, as long as it's a good script, and shot well with good audio, it can be shot on an I phone, or an old sd cam for that matter.

I mean, I paid over 10k for my HVX200 and she never ever said that about that camera..

I ran across some of my old HVX footage last night and I forgot how much I loved the 422. It lacked in resolution, was noisy as hell but oh that beautiful 422.
