Gh5ii?

I have the 12-35 2.8 lens and my budget is kind of tight.
I have plans to shoot a film and another doc. So looking at the specs and upgrades on the GHII it should be more than enough. I can't see needing 6k 60p.

It seems to me like the primary advantages of the GH5II are 10-bit 4k60 (vs only 8-bit 60p internal on GH5) and V-Log L included with purchase as opposed to an extra paid add-on.
So, I don't see much advantage of you getting the GH5II as opposed to the GH5, which can be had for less
I would get the GH5 if you want IBIS. But you may decide that low-light shooting is more important than IBIS, in which case I would get the GH5S. The BMPCC4K would tempt me as well, but i think that the GH5 or GH5S would be easier for shooting doc. They have great battery life and a built-in EVF.
But hey, if you've got your eye on a shiny new GH5II, then I don't think you'll go wrong with that purchase. I agree that the GH6 will have specs that you won't need

Thanks. So as far as shooting a film would you use a GH5II? I also have a doc in the planning stages and I think it would be good for that.
When they say the auto focus has been improved are they right? It's not like I'll be trying to follow cars or people around a track.

I was planning on shooting my film with my iPhone 12 Pro max, but I'm not sure. I think the GH5II might be better

I would use it if I had to, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
If I was instructed to use any MFT camera then I would currently choose the Pocket.
If the GH5 II had better AF (this will answer your other question) then I truly might consider it over the Pocket. But since it doesn't and it still behaves erratically (and absolutely cannot be trusted for a film where you have crucial acting/scenes) then the IBIS alone isn't enough to persuade me.
If I was upgrading to another Panasonic MFT camera from the GH3 then I would definitely wait for the GH6. Even if you don't need 6K or 8K there is a good chance the 4K will be nicer (with modern tech and super-sampling).
If I needed a Panasonic MFT camera right now, I would 100% choose the GH5 II over the GH5.

It sort of depends on your budgetary considerations. What's the total budget? Do you already own an EVF? I wouldn't get a BMPCC4K without budgeting for accessories. But maybe the camera is cheaper than the Panasonic you're considering, so maybe you have that money in your budget.
I have no idea how good the AF is on the GH5II, but I'm guessing that it's too bad for me to use outside of basic circumstances (such as adjusting focus on a person shifting around at a podium when the camera is unmanned).
As for the GH6, I'm not sure it will be worth the wait if it costs twice as much as a GH5 and if the chip shortage means you won't get your hands on one until next spring. The footage may even be more detailed but less pleasant (as NorBro has pointed out about the C300mk3 vs the c300mk2).
You may also consider if there are other tools you need, such as a gimbal, lights, microphones... in which case, it may be better to stick with the iphone and put the money elsewhere.

The detail point is a good point to mention and consider overall.
Coming from the GH3 you might be shocked with the difference in any of these newer 4K cameras (especially if you haven't used any other cameras this entire time and/or don't watch too much 4K on YouTube).
So yeah...the GH6 might technically have "better" 4K but it may not look better to everyone.

Thanks the AF was really a big concern. That is why I never got a GH5. I will keep look at other options. Who know if Panasonic will make the GH6 AF any better!!

And the AF might not be good on the GH6 either.
I have a Rode Videomic NTG and the Wireless Go II, and a Smooth 4 that used to work on the iPhone XR.
I also I have the Moondog Anamorphic lens. Maybe I'l just stick with my original plan and see what shakes out with new cameras.

The 12 Pro Max with the Filmic Pro app isn't bad.

IMO, it still has that artificial look with sharpening.
That's always been the Achilles Heel for consumer/prosumer hardware.
What makes the above piece of content appealing is they know how to make films.
They are professionals and everything is perfect except the quality which just isn't there.
Cinema cameras are actually pretty simple...they use enough resolution to produce the purest IQ through minimal processing with no little to no sharpening in the form of a logarithmic output.
After that comes HFRs and AF and IBIS, etc.

Also it is interesting that someone who can afford Red's or whatever they want to use chose an iPhone 8. Plus plenty of films shot on $100,000 cameras with big budgets and they still suck.
