GH5 GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Hi all,
I used version 2.2 to start the grade on the latest music video I shot on my GH5s.
Obviously, there's a lot else going on in the grade to get it to this messy/retro look,
but EmotiveColour has been working great for me to get the footage out of Vlog so I can start going wild on the look.

Looks fantastic. When did you go S? How do you find EC works with it?

I downloaded it for VLC viewing and was reminded that Firefox has terrible video color; watch in anything but Firefox!

Thanks! I sold my GH5 a while back because I knew the S would be better for me, just recently bought one after renting cams for a while.
I find that EC works great with it, I don't pixel peep very hard though, as you mentioned, these music vids are going to look slightly different on everyone's various browsers and screens anyway.
Though it would be awesome if you were able to profile the S specifically eventually, just so I know I'm getting the best results possible.

We also used EC on this short film I shot this past winter on the original GH5. Combined with some diffusion and vintage cine primes, no one guesses GH5 as the camera.

Amazing, one of my favorite GHa cilps yet
By most any traditional measure, if they guessed GH5 they would be incorrect :)
The S is in the plans - but first I'm working on something really cool (very pleased with it in my initial run this morning)

What is better to used with this conversion HLG or Vlog? Same results or one in particular is better?
VLog for sure; the conversion was measured directly for VLog, whereas HLG support is indirect via a PRE (that converts it to VLog). This PRE is just about to be updated, to the extent that it will be near perfect, but VLog is still the 'pure' route (also has the .vlt preview ability). If you have VLog, go with that, otherwise HLG (its not a big deal one way or the other).

Emotive Color Version 3

Core LogC Details

- Rewrote engine to work at 65x65x65, main files are now at eight times resolution (supporting files processed at that resolution)
- Fine tuned multi-pass/smoothing technique, to achieve absolute smoothness of final files
- Introduced Averaging (averaging two separate measurements/conversions of a light source)
- Corrected LogC rolloff artifact introduced with Verde
- Corrected far magenta-red artifact

Emotive Color Component Details

- Remade EC component to incorporate new Arri primaries that were quietly revised this summer for Alexa LF release
(much deeper, more accurate red placement in relation to blue/green, and subtle hue shifts throughout)
- Incorporated 'Sat Lock-Out", like hue lock out, that is fully accurate to saturation distribution between relative hues of Arri RGB primaries
(corrects excessive saturation of orange/yellow/green in highlights, and under-saturation of blue in shadows)
- Significantly refined saturation model
- Unified EC for both WBs (taking a que from Arri's single R709) [Tungsten has significantly more contrast, higher ideal exposure]
- Smoother rolloff placement in EC component
- Replaced Pop with Linear (no highlight shoulder, better alternative to Arri R709)

- Remade all PREs with latest process (at 65, provided at 33) - much more accurate and smooth
- Entirely new PDF (and supplemental waveforms)
- Added Daylight Skintone SBS
- Updated 'Always Already' with V3 (Download 'Original File' - *Avoid watching in Firefox)

You're a rockstar Sage!

I won't ask, as I have done that plenty, I'll just throw it out there again as a pesky plea: GH5S, EVA1, and please think ahead to the Panasonic S1/S1R in March 2019 as well :D

As well, I look forward to your work on the BMD conversions.

by the way sage, "download original" button on vimeo isn't showing up for me in Chrome, Chrome private mode, or Edge browser... any ideas?

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten ya

It was critical that my work on Emotive Color for the 5 was absolutely flawless before delving into anything new. Now, I feel good about moving forward

Some more music video work where I used the V2 SOFT conversion as my starting point with more stylized looks on top.
This 3-in-1 music video was super ambitious for our time and resources and I pretty much threw every type of lighting possible at the GH5s by the end.

Fantastic shots there. I was most impressed with the yellow shirt sequence. My fav shots:

Is the highlight compression part of the LUT or done by the colorist? Or perhaps some scenes were never properly delogged to Rec.709?

low-contrast2.jpg

One way or another, this extreme low contrast is definitely not my cup of tea.

Yep, Main and Soft have highlight compression (Sicario ceiling). Linear and LogC+Rec709 are linear
Its a low con shot - the cause is actually the shadows. I believe this is due to flare, left as is to hew to optical verity for that one (perhaps Ryan could illuminate how he styled it)
The exterior is correct for the ceiling, as crazy as that sounds. For a 100 IRE ceiling, sunlit white can rise into the 90s

Well, there is highlight compression and highlight compression.

I think if you carefully make a shoulder to roll off the highlights then that can look great, however, compressing all the highlights into some high mid-tone mud is obviously not, at least not in my view.

This is a shot that obviously is pushing the GH5s to the extreme. Sunny, blown out window, only a touch of bounce for fill, hazy, low-con look from the Classic Soft +1 filter and a big blue flare from the vintage lens right on her face.

The highlights are sitting at 768, where the LUT put them.
