GH13 GH5 Rumors

MY PR POC at Panasonic is hinting at a GH5.
"we should be hearing about the GH5 within the next 4-5 months"

Groan. Will it be YET ANOTHER beta that the foolish must subsidize? I vote we ignore anything less than the best. A 9 out of 10. The run-up to the GH3 was so hyped with speculation and Phutz! it fell flat IMHO
It's time I create the ideal $1200 body and force the big boyz to wrap their development around that versus cramming endless beta products down our throats.

Maybe if Panasonic give us the cameras we want, they won't have to rely on luck! :-P

The technology is there and available at the price point, camera manufacturers just need to stop crippling their top tier cameras. GH3 with very low to no moire, high bitrate (10bit) codec, peaking, 13 stops DR, clean 10bit HDMI output....... Make it, and I promise luck won't be an issue.

I read a while back that a GH5 would quickly follow the GH3 because there were several technologies still being worked on when the GH3 was released. Keep in mind I am only guessing, but I believe a GH5 will be announced late this year and will support PDAF focusing, should have focus peeking, and possibly may have a better electronic shutter and faster frame rate.

Yep, panasonic admitted that they released the GH3 to meet a deadline and that it missed out on quite a few features because of this. Considering they gave us less, I wonder if they charged less?

Don't get me wrong, it's a great camera but has some very obvious and annoying flaws that should not be allowed to be on a production camera.

So, um. Why share such a groan worthy non-rumor?

So, are you suggesting the GH1, GH2, and GH3 were beta's? I'm very confused.....

Yes, it IS time that YOU create the ideal.....

You're basing this on...? I'm sure they can deliver everything you want, but not at the price point you want. You know, R&D, manufacturing, distribution, retailers...... they all add up. Plus they have to make some kind of a profit. These aren't mass market items where they make tens of millions and can leverage that for cheaper manufacturing.

Really? Do you have a citation for where they admitted that?

It all comes down to sensor technology. If Panasonic have a better sensor then I'm definitely up for a new model.

I know that Panasonic are working on their own new high dynamic range sensor tech, but it's not supposed to ship for 18 months.

If the GH5 is a huge leap in DR and M4/3 still I will make the leap and just keep my GH3 as a 2nd body for timelapses etc. I was really happy with the GH3 over the GH2 in most aspects so if the next one is a bigger leap I'm all in.

Sure a new GH camera will coming; someday, but i guess is too soon to a new model be announced, I'm practically sure that something will be announced at next year Photokina, but now? i don't think so.
I really like the route that Panasonic take with the GH series, a body every two years, of course only is good if they keep making improvement trough firmware revisions.
Obviously all cameras (as is everything in life) can be improved, but you know what?. The GH3 for me is the best all around camera and at that price it seems unbeatable.

4 is supposedly bad luck.

The pronunciation of the number 4 in both Chinese and Japanese is the same as the pronunciation for the word "death" so 4 is often avoided in product model designations. It's a mild superstition, but where a count is important as in age, currency, or time references, 4 is pronounced straightforward.

The written Chinese characters for 4 or for death are different, and the Japanese Kana for 4 carries no similarity to any Japanese written representation of the word "death". It's just the pronunciation.

Olympus went from the Pen E-P3 direct to the Pen E-P5 bypassing 4, and they did the same with the E-PL series.

I never heard of this in reference to the number 9 (I was stationed in the Far East for just about half of my 20) although I can see where it could come from. The number nine in Japanese is pronounced "kyu" with a definite "y" sound in it, not "ku". In Chinese "ku" pronounced with a "low" tone means "bitterness". The Chinese for "to suffer" is "chih ku" meaning literally to "eat bitterness".

Much of the Japanese language is influenced by or comes from Chinese so I could see a relationship of sorts for "nine" being considered unlucky, but I never encountered that.

Stated here by Panasonic...... Click on the 'why doesn't the GH3 have peaking' question on page (5) of the question.

That being said, what else on the GH3 was not ready for release but rushed out anyway? Dodgy EVF.........?

in terms of the camera, maybe the moire and DR are harder to achieve as that requires a new sensor but clean 10bit HDMI output, better codecs (72Mbps All-I not hight enough), lack of Peaking ....... Are things that the camera is already capable of if allowed.

One thing I really want to see on a camera is 720p at 120fps. Panasonic have already put it into some of their high end compacts, but apart from those sub-$500 cameras, there is nothing else offering 120fps until the FS700... which, by the time you ad a recorder so the 120fps is continuous (rather than a burst which fills the buffer then stops) you are at well over $10,000.

Hopefully whatever camera is next in the GH line will include this.

Would love a new AF system that's usable in video, similar to the Canon 70D. Would also love (and hope because it's in the GX7) if the 5 axis stabilizer is built into the body.

well said.

well said.

10bit clean output, peaking, better internal codec at higher bitrate all cost nothing to implement. The camera already has the technology there to achieve these things. It's common knowledge that camera companies intentionally cripple these features.

Yes, the higher DR and Moire fix probably involve a new sensor which is fair enough but otherwise its all achievable at the current price point.
