GH5 Announced

You know what?

GH4 brought some exquisite* skin tones straight out the box, oh yeah.

Nothing we can't fix on post. We even can do it with horrid fisheye going on GoPros, go figure grading from 10-bit 4:2:2 output via HDMI... and that's the beef about this camera:

GH2 had a hack, so was fancy to like it.

GH4 is the only consumer/prosumer camera under $1,500 to directly threat the big brothers, so...

I follow your point but that just puzzles me... How you guys don't like GH4 but praise or consider that bunch of junk for professional/broadcast use (I understand now why I don't like much to watch TV nowadays!).

GoPro cameras provide the ugliest outcome for ANY screen since Lumière or Edison, well, I'd even say it is unfair to write their names in the same line ;-)

I think you mistook what I wrote. I agree, Go Pros look horrible, I own three and use them and they are really only good for a quick cutaway here and there. The GH4 obviously looks better than a Go Pro, but in comparison to the RED A cameras used on that show that he DP'd, the GH4 was used how we would usually use a Go Pro, like car interiors, mounted on vehicles, etc.

I am curious, does anyone truly like how the images from the GH4, especially skin tones, look? Does anyone think Panasonic will improve the color science on the GH5 so it more closely resembles the pro camera line? My time with the GH4 was only six months but in that time, we tried every setting we could get our hands on, everything from stock out of the box to some settings provided by the Panasonic rep, settings from here, other GH4 forums and none of our clients at the studios or networks really accepted how the camera made people look, very unflattering, even under good lighting. I got rid of it before V Log, does anyone have any talking heads, nicely lit interviews they have shot with V Log that they think look great or their clients think looked great? Anything for broadcast? I met a DP at the Varicam rollout in Hollywood who was using the GH4 a bunch on a cable show, but mainly for outdoor, plant camera and b-roll type of stuff. A cameras on that show were REDs and the DP told me that while he didn't like how the camera looked, it was good enough to use for cutaways, plant cameras, etc. kind of like how many of us use Go Pros.

I think this episode is the best the GH4 has ever looked - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNIRBGXdxV4

No worries : ) I got you. I just react when people praise or dare to mention : D that crappy camera. If you want to buy a drone for a fair price, as for instance, you need to adapt anything from GoPro realm, a true PITA. And people stare you as you want some luxury gadget only because you're looking to base your setup on a 4/3" camera instead.

Are you referring to The Grand Tour? Last I heard they were using some GH4s which I assume was probably for car mounting/car interiors/crash cams and being an Amazon show wanting 4K.

Hi Emanuel, are you a native Portuguese speaker? If so, I just wanted to point out that "exquisite" (unusually fine or beautiful) in English has a very different, in a way almost opposite meaning from "exquisito" (odd or weird) in Portuguese. :)

Hi, yes indeed. You hinted it. Just seen now. Thanks for your heads up! : ) You? Nice level of Portuguese understanding, my compliments. Actually, the Portuguese word is "esquisito" from strange as meaning accordingly. But you know my mother language, very quick to identify, I am flattered (E :-)

Yes I love the way my GH4 looks, cut in with my C100II all the time along with other camera systems.
Actually will pick up the GH4 over the c100 (if I don't need all the bells and whistles of a "proper" video camera and extreme lowlight) for lots of gigs.

I mostly use the natural profile with everything dialed down about 2 notches and master ped +5. (Also speedboosted Canon L glass).
I had a client that didn't like the way cineD matched with the Canons so switched to those settings and now they match perfectly.

Please links to your work with it showing exqusite, better or at least as good skin tones as your C100 MKII, inquiring minds want to know! ;-) Everything out of the GH4, to my eye, has an Orange/Cyan pastel sort of look that I despise, I could never completely get rid of it no matter how the camera was set up. But I got rid of my GH-4 before V-Log hit so I am curious if shooting in V-Log kills that look and improves skin tones.

One of the site's mod Stephen Mick has extensive experience with GH4 and has posted very positive reviews of it. My take is that, while it may not be a $30,000 Red/Sony camera, it is nonetheless capable of very nice images. When presented side-by-side, a higher end model should obviously win (the Zacuto Shootout was kind of rigged) but one doesn't usually have the ability to watch the same footage from two different models side by side.

This reminds me of the old TV set battles. Side-by-side in a TV store, the better set looked better. But, by the time it got to someone's home, any reasonably well made product was good enough for your average consumer. And there have been TV shows shot on DSLR's. And not in 4K.

Figured I'd just throw my two cents in since I have used both GH4 and C100 (actually own the GH4) I have always been impressed with the image coming out of the GH4. I have always experienced great skin tones with it, very natural (no orange look) for me, and the image quality is fantastic. I will shoot the GH4 in 4k then drop it on a 1080p timeline and its beautiful, something the C100 can't do. And the GH4 is less than 1/2 the price of the C100. I will say that when shooting in low light the C100 performs better, but 9 times out of 10 I have the ability to light my scenes.

I think part of the problem is as soon as people took the GH4 out of the box they set it to cine-D and tried to get as flat as they could. Cine-D does have some pretty horrible color but the other baked in modes to me always had more accurate colors. I only consider using Cine-D now with the Leeming LUT which helps fix many of the odd color issues. I really do prefer V-log however and use it recorded externally in 10bit to an Atomos Ninja Blade. By the way the Blade now has a built in V-log LUT via the new firmware which makes this a killer affordable V-log option if one is ok with just HD.

I have always been more than satisfied with the image straight out of the GH4, but now I also record out to an external device (Atomos Ninja Flame) 10bit 4:2:2 and this has turned this camera into a FANTASTIC camera. I have LUTs loaded onto the Ninja Flame but usually just go with the VariCam LUT. I am able to apply the LUT and record it in the Ninja Flame - Awesome!

No problem! I'm a native speaker too. :) However my Portuguese is a bit rusty from living in the US for a long time. I didn't remember if esquisito was spelled with an s or x and didn't have time to look it up. :) Cheers!

You mentioned exquisite in English or Portuguese meaning...? LOL Orange/Cyan pastel?

It is perfectly natural, meu amigo. BTW, what's your Portuguese name? Where are you located in the States? With me happens when I write in Portuguese 'envolvido', I often tend to write it with "i" as written in the English 'involved'.

Um Abraço,

Emanuel :-)

Here are a couple of projects that I produced that to my eye the gh4 works and matches well:

https://vimeo.com/110547668 - GH4/Canon 5DII (dummy EOS adapter on GH4 no speedbooster)

https://vimeo.com/182625301 - GH4/C100II (extreme lowlight, GH4 800-2500ISO)

https://vimeo.com/160703881 - GH4/C100II

https://vimeo.com/159295727 - GH4/C300II/C100II (I'd say even amount of shots/usage between the 3 cameras)

https://vimeo.com/129367185 - GH4/C300/5DIII

https://vimeo.com/182757623 - GH4/5DII (GH4 Acam/5D Bcam, not sure how much Coloring if any the editor did on this though)

You may see things differently but to me the GH4 has been a real workhorse and I'm still amazed with the results it puts out and the idea that it can compete with the "big boys".

BTW I never said skin tones were exquisite or any better than the c100, I just said I can get the cameras to match color-wise and in many instances I like the IQ better overall coming out of the GH4 (but not all scenarios).
I have yet to use V-log, really anxious to try it but will probably just hold out for the gh5 (hope it's included)
