GH5 Announced

It's been a long time coming, but 4K 60p and 10-bit 4:2:2 was definitely worth it. Delivery is the "first half of 2017", so my guess is that the finished camera will be shown at NAB 2017 with the camera hitting stores in May 2017.

Pretty impressive: 4k 10-bit 4:2:2 up to 30p; 4k 60p at lesser quality. Hope to see some footage soon.

Going to take a guess however that 4k 60p would work well for external recording. Not sure if they mean lesser quality in terms of recording format or what they are able to grab from the sensor. If it is just the internal recording format then no big deal to me.

Panasonic has revealed some initial specifications for its under-development Lumix GH5. It will offer 4K/60p capability for the first time in a consumer ILC, and will provide 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video. The GH5 will also provide a 6K Photo mode that will extract 18MP stills from burst footage, or 8MP stills from 60p 4K clips. Panasonic credits advances in processing and heat dissipation for the improvements. No indication of launch timing or price has been given.
A GH5 prototype will be on display at Panasonic's Photokina 2016 booth along with a new Leica-branded series of DG Vario-Elmarit F2.8-4.0 lenses, with 12-60mm, 8-18mm and 50-200mm zooms.

Please let it be the same form (looks like it is) and have IBIS (not holding my breath on that). It seems that IBIS would have been a big enough feature to tease.

I would expect Sony to release equivalent in a similar timeframe.

8bit 420 won't cut it any more so the A7SIII or A9S or whatever will have to be UHD 10bit Slog3 422.

It's a new body, but no idea if the form is compatible with GH4 accesories. I would only be interested in iBIS if it does not effect unlimited shooting time. I'm not willing to accept camera over-heating just to get IBIS.

Wonder if they still employ a micro-HDMI port which nobody liked, or if they fixed the timecode issues, or if they addresses the latency issues?

I would expect Sony to release equivalent in a similar timeframe.

The cheapest large sensor Sony camera that shoots 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 is the Sony FS7, even the FS5 doesn't shoot this format, so I don't know if Sony will be keen on supporting 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 in a smaller/cheaper camera.

For Canon their cheapest 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 large sensor camera is the C300 Mk2...

And I just bought a GH4 at the beginning of this month. That's ok, I knew this was coming soon. The price was right and so are the specs. Sounds like it may be almost another years before the GH5 is released anyway. I dig that new XLR adapter, wonder if it will be backwards compatible with the GH4? I doubt it, but that would be cool.

Also 6K 30fps? What is the deal on that? I know it's a photo mode but it still needs to shoot 30fps to do what it says it does. Sounds like a possible MOS camera to me. ;)

Well I was expecting either 4k at 60 fps or 10-bit internal recording, if this thing has both then it's one generation sooner than I thought!
(I see no word about 10-bit 422 being internal, but it does talk about "recording", so maybe it's only external but there's a fair chance it's internal)

BTW, May is not "early 2017". I'd guess Q1.

Now: Sony, where are you? And why is the sonyalpharumors site down? (goes to dpreview, sees the a99 II has just been announced; it's like an a7R II but in SLT form; the only thing that got me somewhat interested: revised menu XDDD)

It's sort of an announcement of an announcement ;) It seems like soon we will get announcements year or so before actual release. Nikon's DL is a perfect example. I know it's because Kumamoto earthquake but still.

As a canon user I was waiting patiently for the 5d IV and when it came out I was very disappointed. The camera is excellent for photographers but is not what I was expecting as a videographer. Congratulations Panasonic on your continuous aggressive innovations, you just won a canon user. I was about to get a couple of Canon XC10's for their codec and price point but now I am sold on the GH5. The 10bit 4:2:2 was exactly what I wanted for chromakey on budget. I am also very impressed with the HC-X1 camcorder and it's 20x optical zoom and will be picking one or two of those as some of my shoots require traditional video cameras. Keep up the good work.
